Richard Summersgill Prescot Lancashire England

Richard summersgill is my grandfather. He was born in Prescot 9 July of 1864. His father was also Richard Summersgill (Somersgil) married to Ellen Gore, daughter of Giles & Esther Gore. There is also a Richard Summersgill (Somersgil) who is my great-great grandfather. I have his will. I'm looking for the father (Thomas Summersgill) of my grandfather's half brother, John James & sister Hannah. They were born to Ellen Gore Summersgill after Richard, great grandfather died. I was able to find the birth cert for Hannah that names a Thomas as her father. Can't find anything on John James. Can anyone help?? in the 1881 Census Ellen is listed as widower. Son Richard 16, John 7, Hannah as 1.
Thanks for any help. This is a mystery I'l love to solve. Jane Crawford

Hi: Do you have any information on Sarah Summersgill, who lived in Linton in 1841, then moved to Winksley by 1851? She had four children: William (married Elizabeth Shaw), Mary Ann (Mrs. Alexander Metcalf), John Jackson, and Robert. JJ and Robert emigrated to the US and died here. Sarah died in 1864 in Winksley. She was a daughter of Christopher Summersgill, who was an innkeeper in Linton.

John must be popular. My great grandfather was John Parker Summersgill and his dad also John (1824-1886) then Joseph for two generations, and Jonathan (b. 1731), Richard (1696-1754) before my oldest one traced 9 generations back is another John Summersgill (1669-1727). All from John Parker were from Skipton/Glasshouses/Pateley area in the Dales, and so the Linton branch must be related a few generations back.

PS. I'm the father of the Freya mentioned in the first post on this thread! And not called John, BUT of course Ian is a 'scottish' variant of John!! I'm not Scottish, and actually use my middle name, Mike!

I just noticed your post. My gr gr gr grandfather Robert was a son of the Thomas on the headstone. Job was a half brother. Robert moved to Preston and became a watchmaker. I know that Robert's son had a cousin in Linton. This was mentioned in a letter about a visit he made to the area in 1858. I have not figured out the connection though.

hello
ohmygoodness i posted that one while back. i went to Drakensburg sec school way back in 1984 now live in joburg. I found Elona Summersgill on email and she is definitely a relative. We met Aunt Winnie once in Estcourt working at one of the stores when we went to buy my primary school shoes: long ago! her joie de vivre fascinated 10 year old Milly, it embarassed parents so much, they apologised. Got to talking and wht do you know, she turned out to be family! She is the cousin of my father, Lesley Summersgill. My granny is Jane Summersgill and her father was John Summersgill, initially settling in PMB when he landed from Scotland
phew, ya ne

regards

Mildred Jane Summersgill
I have this ancestry in my tree from Yorkshire. Is also known as Summerscales, Somersgills, etc. LOTS of variations which can be confusing. My Summersgills were from Silsden. My tree is on "genesreunited.co.uk". Register to take a look or I can send you a condensed version. "Wharfedale and Craven"is also a great website for Kildwick/Silsden ancestry, and I was just notified of another great site specific to this name: "www.somerscales.org". My EMA is "tonyb119@shaw.ca"

Hi: You were asking about LaDelle Plates. Someone told me a couple of years ago that she had died. I'm not exactly sure when. Maybe 2002 or 2003. I had wondered why I hadn't heard from her as we often shared info about the Summersgills. That was too bad she was a nice lady. Anyways sorry to send you sad news. Jane M

Hi,
Just saw your message from 2003 today. My Great greatgrandfather John J Summersgill was born in Lintin, Yorkshire, England. His Father was William Summersgill from Yorkshire, He was born abt 1820 and was married to Elizabeth Sarah Jackson. They only had one daughter that I'm aware of and her name was MaryAnn. I got her name from old letters that were written to my GGrandfather from England after he came to America. They also had a son named William born Abt 1822. I don't know how your William is related to mine but Summersgill is not a common name.
If you're still looking for information I do correspond with someone who has done research on this line. I can send you her name and address if you'd like. I will also exchange what information I have with you. Joanne Pettit Krishack

Your message said you have her book. Can you email me her lineage up through Mary Jean (Mollie) Davidson who m. William H. Summersgill in the book you have? I have the rest from there. Since she died in 2001, I have no way of contacting her and have no way of locating her book.

Mollie Davidson is the sister of my great grandmother, Della Davidson.

I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much and have a great New year.

Linda Aldrich

H.T. Summersgill

Am looking for information on Harry Travis Summersgill, aka Henry Traverse Summersgill, about 1872-1931. He was born to the third wife of Henry Traverse Summersgilll, a jeweler who had come to America from England. The first two wives died early. HT was born first to a young wife, and went to Verrmont Academy, then to Brown University, where he was quite an athlete. Then he went to Virginia, and finally he went to Tulane, where he was a medical student, and while he was there, he coached the 1900 and the 1901 Tulane football teams and his record was spectacular - they went from zero games won to 6 - all games in 1900, and 8 and 1 in 1901. He received his MD degree from Tulane in 1902.

When he lived in New Orleans, he apparently stayed with relatives.
He never married. He had a younger brother, and in his later years, he first lived with his mother in Vermont, and then went to Long Island, to visit his brother, where he died.

I'm interested in finding out more about this person. He was here in Cincinnati for about six months in 1913.

Thank you

John Steiner jcsneuro@fuse.net

I'd be interested to see if LaDella has finally connected her Summersgills to Robert the wealthy watchmaker.

If you are interested I have my family tree maker file exported and Robert's will etc.. (very interesting).

Regards

jo
