Preston Chronicle and Lancashire Advertiser, April 20, 1861 "On Wednesday, the 10th instant, Mr. Thomas Summersgill, of Grassington, near Skipton, Yorkshire, father of Mr. Summersgill, watchmaker, of this town, for 51 years a local preacher in the Wesleyan Methodist connexion, aged 84."

In Preston Chronicle, Saturday, 09 May 1857 (at www. british newspaperarchive.co.uk): "On Saturday last, at Winksley, near Ripon, Mr. Robert Summersgill, uncle of Mr. Robert Summersgill, of this town, aged 86 years. His widow is of the same advanced age. They had been married above 64 years."

Robert Summersgill of Winksley and his wife, Sarah Ward, had no children. They were taken care of in their old age by Robert's neice, Sarah Summersgill, the daughter of Robert's brother Christopher. She is enumerated with them in the 1851 census.
