As I was doing some research, I came across a couple of interesting articles.

Found in the newspaper “Press”, of Philadelphia, Pa., dated July 30, 1864:

Bloody Encounter Between A Deserter
And A Soldier – On Friday last, a desperate en-
counter occurred in Bell township, Westmoreland
county, between Sergeant McCauley, of the Pro-
vost Guard, and a man named Suman, who had
been drafted last summer, but who failed to re-
port. Suman had been dodging the officers, but
Sergeant McCauley, hearing that Suman was
engaged in harvesting for a farmer by the name of
Ritchey, proceeded thither, and found all the har-
vesting party – Suman along – in the house at the
dinner table. McCauley sat down and ate with
them, after which he in a gentlemanly manner told
Suman his business, and desired him peaceably to
accompany him. Suman at first appeared not dis-
posed to resist, and called to his brother to bring him
his coat, from which he took a revolver, and at once
proceeded to use it. In cocking it, it was accidentally
discharged, lodging the contents in the hip of his
own brother. McCauley then drew his revolver and
told him to desist, or he would shoot him. Suman
persisted by firing again at McCauley, the ball en-
tering his right side; at the same instant the latter
snapped his pistol, but it failed to discharge. A
scuffle then ensued in which McCauley knocked
Suman down, and temporarily defeated both he and
his brother. McCauley got possession of both pis-
tols, and had them then in his power, when Suman
gave up and was taken to Greensburg and put in
the custody of Capt. Coulter’s officers.

Also, found this article in “The Republican Compiler”, Gettysburg, Pa., dated March 24, 1856:

Sentenced – John W. Suman who removed
his trial to Frederick county has been sentence-
ed to the Penitentiary for 14 years and 2
months upon the seven indictments upon which
he was found guilty.

I realize these are not terrific articles for the Suman name, but may help with family connections...
there's good and bad in every tree, somewhere.
