I have the same surname. Most of my family is from western Pennsylvania. My great-grandparents were Ukrainian, though they were from what was then Austria-Hungary if I remember what my father told me correctly. They were ost likely from Bukovina, though I don't know for sure. I'm just guessing because that's the part of the empire that had the largest Ukrainian population, and it is today split between Ukraine and Romania.
Nearly every country bordering (or that formerly bordered) Ukraine has a significant Ukrainian diaspora, so your ancestors may have come from one country while identifying as a different nationality.
Furthermore, my surname was definitely changed or shortened when my ancestors came to the US. People usually think I'm Indian or Korean when they hear it, and nobody ever says it right.
