Hello Bob, I have been trying to find what became of my maternal grand father, Sam Such, for about 10 years. He was born in 1877, the son of William Such a salt maker at the National Patent Salt Works Shaws Lane in Wharton/Moulton (usually referred to as the National Works). There were quite a lot of them at that address and all the boys had biblical names, so William may have been one of the Bible thumpers you were referring to.

He seems to have moved about the Cheshire/Lancashire area. He married in 1906 in Leigh, Lancs and had four girls (one died in infancy). The last to be born was Frances Such in 1916 and the family was then living at the National Works address. I gather he deserted my grandmother some time between 1916 and 1926. I have explored every avenue I can think of to find what became of him (there is no central record of his death for instance). I know he ended up working as an export clerk at a chemical works and that he must have died before 1970, possibly before WWII as there is no record of him on the 1939 emergency census. If you have ever heard of him, I would be very interested to know. Regards, Dick
