My John could be Stynes, Styne, Stine. Probably born in Ireland about 1825. Married Elizabeth Rourk in Cleveland, Ohio and had 4 children. Possibly died there about July, 1900. A brick wall to me.....

Lynne in Florida

Hi Trish,

I have traced my family line back to James Stines born in Athy in 1794, but have got very confused with the son (brother to the Mary mentioned below) Willaim b.1823 as there seems to be a difference between this william and one born in 1850. My detials come from the 1841 census when they seem to be in Liverpool. Any information you have would be gratefully received.

Regard

Santha

Hello Siobhan,

I grew up in Clondalkin after my father moved us all back there in the mid-seventies. My father was a boy in Clondalkin which is why he moved us back. His father's (my grandfather's) name was also Thomas Stynes but he was married to Eileen, not Catherine. However, I believe my grandfather also had a father (my great grandfather) whose name was Thomas. But I'm not 100% sure about that.

I do know that my grandfather and my father both lived in Clondalkin and young boys (as did I). I'm not sure if this helps or not. I can't offer any information on Thomas and Catherine (Waters) Stynes.

Trevor.

If you have any information about my family, I would certainly appreciate it. My name is Trevor Stynes, I now reside in Pennsylvania, USA with my wife Tanja (Kyle). We have two children, Rachel Kiersten (born 10-17-1999) and Logan Michael (born 11-15-2001).

My parents were both born in Dublin, Ireland. My father is Patrick Stynes (born 1939) and he married my mother Christina (Keegan). She was born in 1942 or 1943. They were married in 1962.

I can also tell you a little bit about my father's parents. They were Thomas Stynes and Eileen (Unknown maiden name). I'm afraid I can't tell you much more than that. I don't know my paternal grandmother's maiden name or when my paternal grandparents were married. And unfortunately, I know absolutely nothing about my maternal grandparents. I don't even know their first names but I could give you all of their children's names if that would help.

Anyway, if you can tell me anything more about my family tree in Ireland, I would greatly appreciate it. I can be contacted at my email (TrevorS@coinwrap.com).

Thanks.
Trevor Stynes

Hello again I have realised that I haven't given you our link to this couple. My husband Rob Tidbury is the son of Doris Tidbury nee Swan. Her father was William Swan the son of Susan Styne (b Newington 1858) and Walter Swan (b Nayland Suffolk 1860). I believe Susan's parents were Hugh Stynes b City of London abt 1837 and Susan Burgar b st Brides London abt 1837. A man called Bill Burgar has done a lot of work on the Burgar family tree and they apparently came from Orkney. I think Hugh's parents were William and Felicia Matilda (have I got that right?).

Hi, I am new to this site, but my grandfather was David Stynes b 1884 and I have a complete family tree from William and Matilda for my own family through that line. I have another child of William and Matilda, a Sarah Matilda b 1818, perhaps she'd left home at census?

I believe that William Stynes, b 1798? was actually born in Ireland where there are huge families of that name., I have a birth date for Matilda of 1800, it looks as though it was a cottage industry making books?
Do get in touch if this info useful. regards

My greatgrandfather was James Stynes (Libertys area of Dublin) and his wife was Catherine Campbell, James had seven brothers, Catherine & James had four sons, and a daughter who passed before the age of one. My grandfather Patrick Synes was born in 1915. If this ties into your family tree can you please let me know otherwise it is one hell of a coincedence.

Regards
Brendan

Does anyone know of the Stynes family in Donnybrook?
My great aunt Esther Griffith married John J Stynes in 1919 in dublin, had 3 or 4 children, one named Michael who married Catherine Kelly. They had a family busness in Donnybrook Rd which was left by John J senior. the business was then left by Michael to his son John J. This John J junior was married to someone named Murphy. She had a sister named Valerie and aother I think named Rosario(a). Apparently John J and his wife moved to just outside of Dublin and opened up a butcher business.
Any help appreciated.
Catherine

Hi there

We are an outpost of the family in Essex. My sister-in-law Penny Stynes has traced some of the family back in Ireland and has given us details as far as John Stynes (father of Thomas) from the marriage cert of Thomas and Ellen Graydon in Cellbridge in 1918. Thomas was my husban's grandfather and father of Patrick (David's father), Thomas and Andrew.

In 1991 my husband's parents were able to meet up with many of the family of his two brothers from whom he was parted when they were orphaned on the death of Ellen in 1933.

Any info on Thomas, John and any other links would be most welcome.

Shirleyk58, I got a message from you asking about Kennedy Lane. Can you fill me in on the background to your question? I don't remember posting anything about a Kennedy. I would be delighted to help if I can. I am living in Dublin, Ireland and could look up Irish records.
Cheers, David.

Roy, It's me again, David from Churchtown. Did I see a request from you on some message board recently for information on "Kennedy's Lane" in Dublin? If so and if you haven't got a reply I can tell you it was a lane off Nicholas St. near Christchurch. I have seen a copy of Thom's Directory for 1738 and it lists the occupants of the lane. They are all legal people as well as legal bodies. I don't know when it disappeared. Hope you and your family are keeping well and are settled back in the US. I'm going over to DC for a week for Thanksgiving. Jack Stynes from Victoria was over recently and is on his way around the world.
Best wishes, David Robertson

There were a number of ships in the Royal Navy called Immortalite. Here are some details of two which were in service about the time of your ancestor.
Frigate Launched 25 October 1859 Hull Wooden
The ‘Immortalite’ was built at Pembroke Dockyard and measured 251 feet in length by 52 feet in the beam and had a tonnage of 3984 displacement. She was originally ordered as a 60-gun sailing frigate but was later reordered and converted for screw propulsion. Her length was increased which resulted in her being the fastest wooden warship under sail, allegedly attaining a speed of 12 knots. After a fairly uneventful career spent mainly in port at Plymouth and Portsmouth, the ‘Immortalite’ was eventually struck off the Navy List and broken up in 1883.

HMS Immortalité was a ship of the Orlando-class of first-class cruisers built in the yards of Earle of Hull and launched on 7 July 1887. She was sold for scrapping on 1 January 1907 to S. Breaking Company of Blackwall.
David

Shirley, I looked through the messages on the board and found the one you referred to. It is 8 years since I wrote that and I had forgotten about it. I researched it for someone called Roy. Many of the small lanes, alleys and courtyards in Dublin in the Victorian era were named after the owner of the houses built in them. The main thoroughfares were called after important people.
You ask about someone born about 1847. The registration of births, marriages and deaths did not come into force in Ireland until 1864. The only record of anyone born before then would be in a baptismal record. You would need to know which parish the person was born in. There are records of householders in Dublin in a census taken in 1851 and details of property held in Griffiths Valuation of Ireland. If you live near a large city there is probably a Mormon church there. These usually hold copies of genealogical records. They are available free to anyone regardless of religion. You could try them for help. also here are a few websites you could search for a small sum of money.
http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/dublin/

Griffiths Valuation
Kennedy Michael Abbey Street, Lower
Kennedy Michael Marlborough Street
Kennedy Michl. Marlborough Street
Kennedy Michl. Potter's Alley

http://www.worldvitalrecords.com/indexinfo.aspx?ix=eneclann_...

http://www.originsnetwork.com/
I hope this is of some help.
David.
Shirley, you didn't say what religion Martin Kennedy was. I found a Catholic baptism in 1847 for James Kennedy, parents Martin and Mary. The are no details given as to the mother's maiden name or the date of the baptism. I would need to visit the National Library to look at the records. Then if you want a copy of the baptismal certificate I could get a copy from the church for a fee. If you go to www.irishgenealogy.ie and on the bottom right of the opening page put the name Kennedy in and for location put Dublin, for date just put 1847 and click on search. Then on the second page of results you will find James Kennedy. Click on that and you will see the parent's names.
I will be in touch soon about finding the crew list of Immortalite.
David.

Hi Roy, sorry for the delay, I've only just seen your reply, which I found very interesting as Narraghmore is quite close to Castledermot where my great grandfather Joseph Quinn (who married Eliza Dowling) came from. His mother was Mary Stynes and his grandmother was Margaret Dowling so there's a good chance of a connection somewhere. Do any of these names ring any bells with you or any older family members? Do you have any Tullow or Carlow links?
I'd love to trace this possible connection further so any hints would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Trish.

I was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, October 29, 1939. I would like to know where the name Stynes originated and what towns in Ireland this name is most prevalent. It is my understanding that this name existed for centuries near Dublin, but may have been brought to Ireland by "William the Conquerer" in the eleventh century or William of Orange in the seventeenth century.

Hi Hilary,

I don't see a direct connection between our lines, although it is very possible given the relatively small size of the Stynes clan in Ireland.
However, I do have a copy of the original marriage record of your great great grandparents. I picked it up while researching my own line, some years back, I guess. If you want a copy, I would be happy to send it to you. Pls forward me an email address and I will send it electronically.

I also have a note that a Julia Stynes was married to a Robert Alexander in 1898. Julia's father was James Stynes, and they were married in Clondalkin, where your g-g-grandparents were married. Is that the same Julia?

Would love to work with you on your research into the Stynes clan.

Take care

Roy
