My Strianos settled in Providence. My Great Grandfather Filippo was born in San Marzano Sul Sarno, about 35 miles north of Montecorvino. His father Raffaele was born in Pagani, about 30 miles north of Montecorvino. One of Raffale's other sons was named Alfonso (portred66's father's name). Alfonso died as a child, but given southern Italian naming conventions there may be a connection - I know it's a long shot, but had to try. I have only been able to go back one additional generation - Filippo Striano & Teresa Lavorante (I do not have any additional children for them). I am not sure where they were born, but Raffaele's death record indicates they died in Pagani.

Hi Patricia, I am the great-grandson of Carmine Striano, who lived and owned a building in Manhattan in the early 1900s. My mother, Patricia Striano Frugard, and grandfather, Pasquale Striano also lived and grew up in Brooklyn. We have done quite a bit of research on the Striano family, and have been able to trace our roots back to Montecorvino, Italy, though I still think we are missing some information. Have you been able to find anymore information on your grandfather's family? If it is easier, you can send me a message or email @ FrugardM@gmail.com.

Thanks!
-Matt Frugard

Striano Roots

Hello everyone,

What I have been able to determine thus far, is that nearly all Italian Strianos should be able to trace their lineage back to Cicciano, Caserta, Italy. I have been able to locate four original Strianos in Cicciano, but am unable to determine if they are brothers or cousins, as the records only go back to around 1809 (marriage licenses, however, often listed parents, which is how I was able to get the four originals). Their names are:

Michele Striano, who married Vincenza Masella
Felice Striano, who married Gelsomina Di Palma
Gaetano Striano, who married Giovanna Marrone
Vincenzo Striano, who married Diamante Farinai

I'm sure many of you may have these very names in your own recent family history. In Italy, it was tradition for a son to be named for his grandfather, or a daughter to be named for her grandmother.

I believe everyone who posted here can trace their lineage back to any of those four. In fact, I've done a lot of it myself. Each of them had children, who's children had children. It's been pretty difficult to sort through, but I think I have all I can gather on my own.

If you have any questions, or would like to know if I have found any information on your own history, feel free to respond here or message me, and I will share the information I collected thus far. I would post it publicly, but I do not want to break the privacy of those who are still alive.

Thanks!
Matt

So thrilled to hear all this.

I met Joseph Striano many years ago at a wake when I was a teenager. I had been writing out Christmas cards for my mom, and I sent cards to them every year, and then finally met them.

As the youngest grandchild, I never met any of my grandparents either. But my three older siblings, Anthony (Tony), Mary Ann and Frank (Bucko) were 20 years older. Tony died when he was 18 of rheumatic fever, but my brother and sister remember everything. They were born in Honesdale, moved to 129 Mott Street during the depression, but visited our maternal grandmother every summer in Honesdale.

I grew up in Boro Park, Brooklyn, where the family moved after Tony died. I will email you names and dates.

Hi Pat

I just wrote to cousin Annette. Matteo' eldest daughter was named Antonette and also named a daughter Carmella and son Pasquale. Alot of names intermingled which is nice to see. There is also a brother of our grandfathers who is Guiseppi who was born in 1879. He lived next door on Hester St in NYc with his wife Carmella and daughter Nettie. Carmine and Matteos father was Felice Striano and their mother was Anna Maria Capici. Joseph Striano was Matteos oldest son, my Moms oldest brother who I do have photos of because he walked my mom down the aisle in 1947 since she was the youngest of 10 and Matteo had passed away in 1939. We didnt get to see him to often because he was already married when my mother was born. He had 6 children,I have all names. My brother Gregory Kersting will be emailing you more info. We never met our grandparents and were always intrigued with the close knit Striano family. As I mentioned to Annettte I do sometimes go to there parish Most Precious Blood on Mulberry Street and light a candle and say a prayer. Take care and ask any questions you wish to.

Hi Annette,
It is so nice to meet you sice our Grandfathers were bothers that definitely makes us cousins. My brother Greg and I have been researching the Strianos for quite some time. About 10 years ago we heard from a Barbara Trombino who was married to a Joe Trombino from Carmines side of the family. I'm sure you know Matteo and Carmines parents were Felice Striano and Anna Maria Capici. I also have in my notes That Guiseppi Striano and his wife Carmella and their daughter Nettie lived next door to Matteo at 171 Hester Street. This is all in The Little Italy section of Manhattan. Their parish was Most Precious Blood on Mulberry Street. I visit it on occassions I am in the area and light a candle and say a prayer for our wonderful family. If I may pass your Email adress to my Brother Gregory Kersting...he has more info and some pictures to share. We are the children of Matteo Strianos youngest (of 10) daughter Vera. I am looking forward to sharing info and family lore with you. Carol Ann Kersting Cozzie

I am Matteo Striano's granddaughter. Matteo and Carmine were brother and both worked at the Cheese Factory around 1910. It was located on Bunneltown R, Texas, wayne County Pa. I am copying this from my records. Carmine named one of his sons Matthew and Matteo named one of his daughter Carmella. Carmine Jr applied for citizenship in 1932. I have more info i would love to share. Carol Ann Kersting Cozzie

OK, here's another long shot - my father's mother adopted a daughter some time after my father left the area in 1929. I don't know anything at all about the daughter, but my grandmother married a man with the last name of Bono or something like that - my mother is going to do some research about it and get back to me. The other names of my father's uncles and aunts (that I have heard of) were Giralda or Geraldine (who had 5 husbands!), Oratzio, Joseph, and Antoinette. Catielo's wife's name was Vincenza, but they caller Maria. How's that for some scattered information? I have more, and if I find it, I'll send it along.

You mentioned that your grandfather had 17 brother and sisters and that there are several Rafaels within your Striano family. Do you happen to know the names of your 17 greataunts and greatuncles? Do you have any other information on the other Rafaels?
Also, this may be a super long shot, but I have to ask. Does the name Rosina (or Rose) Bovino mean anything to you? My great grandmother married a Bovino after her first husband (my great grandfather, Filippo Striano) died. Their daughter became pregnant during her teens and was sent her to live with relatives in the Philadelphia area. No one seems to know who these relatives were. I thought these relatives would have been connected to either the Bovinos or diLustros, but I guess they could have been Strianos. She was born in 1916 and would have come to Philadelphia sometime in the early 1930s.

My great grandfather Filippo (born abt 1886) and his sisters, Annunziata and Margharita originally came from somewhere in the Salerno area. Their father was Rafael Striano and their mother was Rosina (born abt 1969). I believe I found Rafael traveling back and forth between Italy and the US many times before his wife, Rosina and their three children arrived (abt 1905) - they may have had more; these are the only ones I know about.
I would be very interested in learning about your Striano family.

I realize this was written years ago but decided to respond in the hope you will see this. I believe the Carmine you mention is my great-grandfather.

My great-grandfather Carmine was originally from Montecorvino Rovella. He was the father of nine children and owned a building at 129 Mott Street, NYC. I am the granddaughter of his sixth child, Pasquale (also know as Patsy or Pat). Would really enjoy hearing more from you...

They settled in the Philadelphia area. I don't know a lot about my father's early life, since he died whe I was ten years old.
F. Gawryn

I just saw your post about the Striano family. My father was born Rafael Striano, in Roca pie Monte, Italy, near Salerno. His father, Catielo Striano had 17 brothers and sisters, many of whom came to the US around the turn of the century, (some also went back to Italy!) but there are a number of Rafael Strianos from that family. We may be related, as my father somewhere along the way changed the spelling of his name from Striano to Streano.

Yes. Carmine Striano and Maria Villecco are my grandparents. I believe Carmine emigrated here by himself, and Maria came here with her first three chilren (Theresa, Carmine and Marianne along with Matteo and Maria Striano, around 1898. Could that be your grandfather?

My father, Pasquale Striano was born in 1902. The family lived in Honesdale Pennsylvania, where they owned a cheese factory. Moved to little Italy during the depression, although I believe my grandfather always owned 129 Mott Street. My uncle Mike owned a cafe at 127 Mott Street until the 1950's.

I have lots more info if you think Matteo is my great great uncle.

My name is Pat Striano Frugard. I was just getting a family tree ready to send you. It's from a family tree maker program. The file is a pdf, so I can't post it here. I can email it to you if you send me your email. Funny, you are not on this tree even though I was aware of you. I think I remember your father is Leo Kern?

I thought the family lost/sold the factory during the depression. That's when my family moved to the lower east side of Manhattan. They spent summers in Honesdale with my mother's mother.

I'd love to see the pictures. My email is Minnie and Barbara Ann (Gargano) died in a house fire in Summit, NJ in 1973, along with Barbara's baby daughter, Christina. Very sad.
You can see them on the tree.

All on the tree:
Uncle Tony - Anthony Santulli married Mariana (aunt Danny, probably someone couldn't say "Annie"). She came over from Italy with your grandfather and "Aunt Tessie". They were the 3 oldest children.

Uncle Frank - Striano lived in Brooklyn with Aunt Josie (Ciotti) and her husband and daughter, Cecilia I grew up in Brooklyn, so I saw them all the time growing up. Aunt Josie's son is "Jiggers", Pat Ciotti.

The only Delores I know of was on the wife of my cousin on my mother's side, Dolores LaPont Tigue. She died in 1952, but they did live in Honesdale.

Cousin Gee..two brothers GeeGee and Sonny (another one). They were grandsons of Aunt Tessie, children of Aunt Tessie's daughter, Annie and Angelo Lecesse. My brother said GeeGee is Charles and Sonny is Nicholas, but I'm not sure.

More to follow. I have some pictures at home.

I believe we met when we were children in the 1950's, when my family was visiting Pennsylvania.

My father was Pasquale Striano, Carmine's younger brother. Carmine was the oldest of nine children. The family owned a cheese factory in the 1920's in Honesdale. I would love it if you have any information on the factory, and I have lots of information to share if we are related.

I am 65 so you are correct. I don't remember the name of the cheese factory but I have an aunt on my Dad's side who may know - I will ask her. I think I found pics of the 1952 flood - I don't know what buildings they are of - was this when the cheese factory was destroyed or was that earlier? My Aunt Lois from my Dad's side, says that she thinks the Cheese Factory was just always known as the Striano's Cheese Factory.
I do have pictures from 1939 of people of Minnie and Barbara Ann both of whom I remember. I even have Barbara Ann's First Communion picture. I remember Uncle Tony and Aunt Danny too. Then there are pictures (1940's) of "Delores", "Ann", "Uncle Frank", "Cousin Gee", "Jiggers", "Lucille", "Snow White". I really don't know any of them - do you? and what is your name? If you want any of these I can scan them in and email them to you.
- Annette

Striano's of Providence, RI

Found some more and revised information:
My great grandfather Filippo Striano was married to Caterina diLustro. His father's name was Raffaele Striano and his mother was Rosina ?. Raffaele came Italy in 1890 and settled in the Providence, RI area. They had two other children, Annunziata (Nancy, married Vincenzo Carlone) and Margherita (married Emilio Lonardo).
I also found what could possibly be a brother and a sister of Raffaele on the passenger list (Chiara and Gaetano). Any information on either of these would be deeply appreciated.
