Harve was born in 1881 in Missouri and died in 1954 in Arkansas. I am having trouble getting further back than this in my tree. Some research I have done on the Internet suggests that the dad may be Thomas Strait born 1836 in Kentucky. Wife may have been Samantha unknown maiden name. Any help greatly appreciated as the older members of the family a generation or two back are now gone and unable to provide information.
Yes, please if you could email copy of death cert for Benjamin Franklin Straight--kstanziano@woh.rr.com. I will also begin looking the "The Great Mouse Hunter" to check that out. (Hoping her last name used was Straight.) Have you taken the YDNA test yet? I just cannot find anything on Jefferson Straight's father and am trying all leads. My brother did the YDNA but results are not back yet, a direct male descendant is needed.

I do remember hearing the Drago name before but now you have made it clear for me, guess I probably had the men mixed up and couldn't make it all make sense to me since they both had Elizabeth for wife.

Were Jacob and Peter Straight related, if so how? Are you related through Jacob or Peter?
Peter & Elizabeth Ice Straight DID NOT have a daughter named Temperance. I believe, but cannot prove that Jacob and Elizabeth Drago Straight had a daughter Temperance who was a baby at the time of the scalping of father Jacob. Baby Temperance married first ___ Straight and had a son Jefferson (b: 9 APR 1806 at Indian Creek, Marion County VA, and died on 13 NOV 1896, in Green Township, Monroe County OH, according to the burial record from the West Union Church of Christ Cemetery in Perry OH (Monroe County), and daughter Elizabeth. Temperance married second Samuel Eddy from Monroe County OH about 1842, and had son James with him.

All of Peter's 7 children were Elizabeth Bayles Ice Straight's children, born between 1795 and 1809. He only married once.

I have found records for several WV Straits/Straights who I cannot place. These are: Jasper b: 1794, Melissa b: 1820, Delilah b: 1780 and mother of James (1798/9-1884).

I hope that this is useful.

Sorry I am so anal about this, I am just so confused, too many people with the same names! Did your Peter Straight and Elizabeth Ice have a child Temperance? Temperance then had a son Jefferson Straight. I can't figure out if he (Jefferson) was illegit or if maybe Temperance was daughter-in-law and married a Straight. I know I go back to William Milton Straight (1838-1914)whose father was Jefferson (1809-1895). Jefferson married Barbara Ellen Eddy. I have a letter Jefferson wrote to his son William Milton when Jefferson's wife, Barbara died. Temperance was Jefferson's mother. Did Elizabeth Ice have children with Peter Straight, her 2nd husband?

Peter & Jacob Straight/Strait-Monogalia Co., VA/WV

I am trying to clear up some confusion over Peter & Jacob Straight of the Monogalia Co., VA/WV area. I don't know much about this line and was recently given a wonderful family history of what was supposed to be my ancestors through my mother's side of the family. In it, one of my great-grandfathers was the Jacob Straight who was killed in an Indian Massacre. However, I've just stumbled across some different information that seems to say that this may not be the case. Here is the information of this line as it was originally given to me:

David Straight m. ??? /
William Straight m. Margaret Lesh /
William Straight m. Abbie Bruce /
Jacob Straight m. Elizabeth Morefield /
John Milton Straight m. Ann Carhart /
Jacob Straight m. Rebecca Brown /
Jacob Straight m. Arabella Wilson /
Peter Straight m. Elizabeth Bayles (Ice) /
William M. Straight m. Jane Cain /
William Straight/Strait m. Rosa Ann Welch /

The conflict seems to arise with the third Jacob Straight who married Arabella Wilson. According to the second bit of information I received, that Jacob was NOT the son of the Jacob Straight who married Rebecca Brown.

The William Straight/Strait who married Rosa Ann Welch was my great-great grandfather and I'm fairly sure the line is correct up through the Peter Straight who married Elizabeth Bayles (Ice). After that, I'm not sure at all. Can anyone help?!

I'm lost also so hope you've had time to connect your dots. My dot - that I'm pretty certain about begins with William Milton Straight (my gr-grandfather, 1838-1914) who married Lucinda Barbary Dennis(1838-1918). William Milton's father was Jefferson Straight (b. 1809 in Indian Creek WV, M. Barbara Ellen Eddy 1801-1880). Jefferson's father ???, his mother was Temperance Straight(1787-1853). I cannot seem to find information on her before she married Samuel Eddy in 1808. Can you help me? I found a web cite str8cousin@aol.com but many of those names and dates do not match what I have.

I am descendant from Jefferson to William Milton, to James Thomas to Charles Lester. I am his daughter Kathryn Ann. Seems Temperance is a mystery, she married Samuel Eddy and they apparently signed property to Jefferson, then to William Milton then to Silas Jefferson. I need to track this down because it somewhere may lead back to Temperance and maybe Jefferson's father. Don't know but did hear that Levi Morgan was his bio father-totally unfounded to this point. Waiting for any information you may have. kstanziano@woh.rr.com

I believe I am descended from the same Straight line. However, I can not get past Benjamin Straight because I only want to include information in my tree that I can document using proper sources. Can you tell me where you have found the information on Jacob and Elizabeth Straight? Any source material that can directly link them to my line would be appreciated. I've seen trees that go back to Wales, but don't see any sources cited.
Is there a particular library in WVA or VA that one should go and do genealogy research in for this family? I've gone to the one in Fairmont, but it is quite small. Thank you!

There is considerable confusion but as best I can figure this out - in 1780 Jacob Straight and John Dragoo settled on 400 acres each in Marion County, West Virginia. John Dragoo married Jacob Straight's sister who was known as Betsy. Jacob Straight married John's sister Elizabeth. I am still working on this but it appears their father was Jacob Sr. married to Rebecca Brown.

If you are still interested, I would be pleased to discuss the Straight line that you are researching.

Arabella has come to my attention before, but I believe that it is unlikely that she was the mother of Jacob's children. From the official records available, I believe that Peter's father Jacob married a sister of Nicholas Wood, possibly an Elizabeth Wood. There is no proof of this, only circumstantial evidence. However, there is proof that Peter's mother was named Elizabeth.

I am curious to know more about the source of your information about the ancestors of Jacob and Rebecca Brown Strait. I've seen these names before associated with a Strait family from Wales.

Benjamin Franklin Straight is my G-G-Great Grandfather, and I have a copy of his death certificate which lists his parents as William M.(Milton) Straight and Julia Arnett. This line goes back to the infamous Jacob K. Strait which begins a bit of a disagreement between the Straight family and the Kennedy family. Anyway, I have a copy of the "The Great Mouse Hunter" written by my Great, Great Aunt Ganelle (daughter of B.F. Straight). I'd be glad to email you a digital copy of the death certificate if you want it. Hope this helps!

First - Im glad youre doing some looking. But Thomas didnt marry Cassidy. Also 49 Prospect was a secondary residence - Neil McKiernan was Born 1783 and Married Eliza Straight whom he met in Poughkeepsie before he joined his brother John in Paterson where John literally built all the houses on the block (not a laborer - John and Neil had fled Ireland August 1798 after the last battle - Ballinamuck with seven other brothers - they were a well to do family and left with whatever they could grab or get sent to them in secret. I am Neils direct decendant and I have his watch in my desk still. (each generation in the direct line holds the custom to name a son Neil - I am the 16th as the tradition is quite old dating from the 11th century) I grew up learning our history and can assist you in some ways with the lineage as I think you are missing facts about who lived with whom and where.
All the best Neil

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

MRS. MAHALA M. STRAIGHT
NOVEMBER 5, 1897

Mrs. Mahala M. Straight, mother of Mr. J. A. Straight, residing southwest of town, and for many years a resident of this community, passed quietly away at her late home in Chicago on Wednesday (Nov.3) morning, shortly after midnight. Mrs. Straight had been in poor health since last February and her death was caused by heart failure.
Mahala M. Stoddard was born in Chatauqua county, New York, on March 23, 1835, and was united in marriage with Alonzo A. Straight on April 16, 1854. In September, 1856, Mr. and Mrs. Straight came to Illinois, settling in Cropsey township, McLean county, being the second family to settle in the township. After Mr. Straight's death, a number of years ago, our subject made her home with her father or children until about five years ago, when she went to Chicago, where she and her daughter have since resided. She leaves to mourn her departure three sons and one daughter, namely: J.A., of this place; Dora, unmarried, who has resides with her mother in Chicago; O.B., of Belleflower; Frank, of Omaha, Neb.; and other relatives and hosts of friends in whose memories her pleasant and cultured manner will ever cause her to remain.
Funeral services were held from the home in Chicago, after which the remains were taken to Fairbury. A service was held at the home of her brother-in-law, Mr. R.C. Straight, in Fairbury, and the remains laid to rest beside those of her husband in the Fairbury cemetery.
Those present at the burial were the immediate relatives and Fairbury friends--Mr. and Mrs. B.M. Stoddard, of Minonk; Mrs. O.H. Brigham, of this city; Mr. Elden Brigham, of Watseka; Messrs. Reuben Stoddard, of Minonk, and Bert Stoddard, of Toluca.
Hello. Scared me when i found your reply from the year 2000
and am now just finding it!! Know what your talking about tho. Yes i have some info on Mr Straight but moved last year into a new home and its smaller then my mobile home was. But many boxes still packed and my daughter comes twice a week to clean and has to be home by noon. So she only has ca 2 hours of working time. Lost my 51 yr old daughter last Aug. So she works alone now. But she told me today she was going to start on boxes next Wed. Did Mr Straight die in Wayne Co, IL.?
Viola.
