It would be nice to know your name so I can respond properly. The only family of Stoop that I know of that changed their name was a Stoop family from Shamokin, PA. When their ancestor came to America, he spelled his last name as CZAP. This is how you spell Stoop in Polish, it is pronounced STOOP though spelled CZAP. To blend in and become "more" American, he simply changed the spelling to the more phonetic STOOP.

I have traced my family back to William Stoope, who married Amelia Startzman in 1827 in Washington County, Maryland. (In the 1850 census their last name is Stoop (in Richland Co., Ohio), but after that (in census data from Albion, Noble County, Indiana) it is spelled Stoops, as my family has always spelled it. I would like any information on his parents, siblings, etc. Thank you.

William - I am interested in the marriage between Catherine Stoop (daughter of John ) and Joseph B. Henry in Guernsey County Ohio in 1858. That Joseph Henry may be the brother of my 2nd great grandfather. My Joseph's father was Harmon Henry and they had a farm in Jefferson Twp. Harmon died in 1861 and Joseph only inherited some money, not the farm as one might expect for a first born son. Do you have any additional information? Thanks, Sherry
Dear Sherry,
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately all I have is info surrounding their marriage. I know that Catherine remarried circa 1880 to someone with the surname Green. She is listed in Licking Co. death records as Catherine Green and passing 22 February 1881. What ever happened to Joseph B. Henry? I couldn't tell you. I think he passed away. I posted this notice as a "fishing" effort to see if anyone out there had any info. I am sorry I can't help you out with more info. I believe I located Catherine in the 1880 Ohio census as Kate Green in Granvill, OH. and a servant to Orran Trenier, a blacksmith.

Marion Stoop Obituary

"Elgin Recorder" June 27, 1946 Elgin, OR
MARION STOOP ANSWERS CALL
Marion Stoop, resident of Union county since 1887, succumbed to illness at Grande Ronde hospital, La Grande, Thursday, June 20. The remains were placed in charge of the Snodgrass Funeral Home and funeral services were conducted in Elgin at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, the Rev. Helling, pastor of the Nazarene Church officiating. Interment followed in the Elgin Cemetery.
Marion E. Stoop was born in Guthrie County, Iowa, February 19, 1874 and was aged 72 years, 4 months and 1 day. At the age of 13, he accompanied his parents and other members of the family in the long trip by wagon and team from Iowa to Union County, where he resided continuously. Immediate relatives surviving are two brothers. Charles, of La Grande, Henry of Dayton, Washington, and one sister Mrs. Katie White, also of Dayton. Nine nieces and 10 nephews survive the deceased.
It is somewhat ironical that Marion Stoop now rests in a cemetery of which he long served as sexton, and over a period of many years prepared for the entombment of many deceased persons.
Marion Stoop was inoffensive, good natured, liked the companionship of friends and was until his fatal illness, a hale fellow, well met.
Members of the Stoop family engaged in farming and harvesting operations after their arrival in Union county in 1887, but near the turn of the century they moved to Elgin and engaged in operating a sawmill, a business which they followed several years.
Hi
My name is Laurel Thwaites. My name growing up was Lynn Watts. I am using my son's screen name. My grandmother was born Viola May Stoop in Wabash, Indiana in 8/17/1902. Her parents were Nora and Walter Stoop. Nora died in/or around 1905. The Everett family in Richland or Schoolcraft Michigan adopted her. She had a half brother named Max Everett. She married Carl Henry Seybert in October 1920. He was from Howe, IN. Grandpa died in 1971 and Grandma married Everett Irving in 1975. They were second cousins by adoption. He was related to Elizabeth Vradenburg/Harden of Mendon, MI. Elizabeth was married to Lester Harnden. They both died in the early 1970's. Grandma died in August 1994. Grandpa Everett died in 1995. Viola and Carl lived in Climax, MI. She moved to Augusta, MI with Everett when they married February 1, 1975. Please let me know if this is helpful to either of us. My email address is Laurel.Thwaites@dla.mil. Thanks for all you do. Laurel
