Re: African American Stone family in Cincinnati

Hi 'Cousins',
The 'Henry' story is intriguing.
My mother was Naomi Stone, daughter of Sylvester 'Coon' Stone - born in 1865. Thomas was my Great, Great Grandfather.
The story about the will and the bequest are true. According to Census records, Henry was still on Thomas' farm in 1870 in Lewis Co., KY. The guess that Mahriah was his mother is just that. I had never heard the 'my brother John did it' portion of the story.
Henry shows up in the 1876 Cincy Williams Directory. He continues to appear (off & on) until @ 1891. Henry died in 1893 and is buried in Union Baptist Cemetery in Cincinnati. I have as much of a death record as there is. No headstone - I've looked.
In Aug. 1882, Henry married Annie Mathers listed as 'colored.' Annie shows up until @ 1820. I found some indication of when she died but am not certain. I believe Annie is from Hodgenville, KY but not certain.
Sylvester's Grandchildren meet every year on Scott's Branch on Memorial Day Sunday. The Henry story has intrigued me for years.
The only indicator that Henry & Annie had children comes after Henry's death when a lady named Alice Dixon (var. sp.) lived with/near Annie and is listed as her daughter. Records show Alice was born near Dayton OH & has Dixon parents (not Annie).
If you have more or know how to find more, I'm all for it.
GregHughesSr@aol.com

My grandmother was a Stone. Beatrice Stone, dob March 1931, lived in Indianapolis, IN. The Stones were business owners, which makes it so strange that I cannot find any information at all about them. I don't know where she was born, and I can't find any additional information about her other than the marriage certificates for the two men she married. She had a brother named Junie(?) which might have been a nickname for Jr. or for Eugene. Any information anyone can provide would be great. They both passed in 1994.

Hi,

I would love to know if you ever found the answers to your questions from 2002. I have just started researching The Stone, Fricker, Bowden, Horsham families and have been wondering the same thing!

Any information about the family would be great. I am the 3rd great grandaughter of Samuel Stone and Charlotte Fricker.

Thanks, Alana

Ira C. Stone, b.1810, of Woodford Co., IL, died in 1911 as “oldest man in central IL”

I have an original carte de visite photograph of “Ira C. Stone”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Bloomington, IL, but he lived in Woodford Co., IL. He looks to be about 75-80 years old in the picture.

I found Ira C. Stone in censuses for Woodford Co., IL from 1860 through 1910, living in Kappa, Palestine and El Paso, IL. His birthdate was 15 Aug 1810, and the “History of Woodford County” states that he came there in 1859. Bloomington Pantagraph newspaper of January 26, 1911 printed his obituary and described him as “central Illinois’ oldest man”.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Ira C. It would be nice to know who I am related to and where my ancestors came from. The only info I know is that my dads dad (my grandfather's) name was Fred Chester Stone. My Dad had another child (a son) by the name of Scott Stone. Please, if you can help, let me know! I can probably give you more info after going through my fathers things.

Re: North Carolina/Kentucky Stones

Do you have more on your John Stone born 1717 in Devon,
England and migrated to North Carolina. I am looking for
more information on a Capt. John Stone of old Edgecombe-
Bute-Halifax-Franklin County, North Carolina. The first
evidence I have of a John and Ann Stone of Edgecombe was
in the court records of 1755. Capt. John Stone that I am
researching could have been born as early as 1717 but I am
thinking closer to 1734. He had children by Alicia Hurst
in Edgecombe-Bute-Halifax District on Fishing Creek with
the second and last child, a son, being born in 1755. I am
not sure if they ever married. Alicia died before 1757 for
Capt. John Stone had married Pegee Merritt and they had
the first of their four known children in 1760. Their
first child they named John. John would grow up and marry
Sarah "Sally" Walker. I am trying to find Capt. John Stone
parents, brothers and sisters. All of his children are;
a possible illigitimate son, William Green...possible
mother was the youngest sister of Henry Green who married
the daughter of William Stone and Elizabeth Dennett thought
to be the sister of Capt. John William Stone which would
make Henry Green and Capt. John Stone possible brother-in
laws. The next two children of Capt. John Stone were born
by Alicia Hurst who also raised William Green. They are
Mary Stone born about 1753/54..Jonathan Stone born in 1755
Alicia died shortly after the birth of Jonathan for as
stated Capt. John William Stone had married Pegee Merritt
daughter of John Merritt by 1757. If another child was
born between 1758 to 1759 we have no knowledge. The first
living child of John and Pegee Stone was John Stone, born
in 1760. Another son, William was born in 1763. Another
son, Merritt Stone was born in 1765 while their daughter
Elizabeth was born in 1767. Not sure who William Green or
Mary Stone married. Jonathan married Felisha Cooke. John
married Sarah Walker. William's wife is unknown right now.
Merritt married Karenhappuch "Happy" Stallings while
Elizabeth Stone married John Hight Jr.,. Any help would
be much appreciated.
I have an ancestor, Mary A. Stone born about 1816 in Maryland by 1850-1860 censuses, married Alexander Mateer about 1833 in Shippensburg, PA. Only parental hint is an adjacent George Stone in Cumberland County, PA. in 1830 census who would be born about 1785.
I've located several potential George Stones for this period in Frederick County and Calvert County, MD.

"So much history to draw from and so little understanding
of the times and events."

It was so nice to read your posting. I too can say for a
fact there are those who are missing out on the knowledge
of their lineage yet it remains as stated, "the times and
events" we place our energy, mind, and heart into to just
survive has consumed us beyond all thought and manner of
who we are, where we are from, and why we are here!
Many of those of us would be enthralled with curiousity
if we knew what you have said applied directly to us.
In my findings I am one who stands in direct and indirect
lineage of many notables that have held prominence and
title to governments and monarchies that existed.
My lineage is a indirect lineage to the throne of England
but it is my lineage none the less as you state. Without
the existance of these or those people, I would not be here
today. A delicant balance of events in history is why we
are who we are today and why we are here.
My mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Stone, daughter of;
John David Blackmon Stone, son of; Nannie Catherine Wicker-
Stone, daughter of; Susannah Blackmon-Wicker, daughter of;
John Blackmon, son of; Elizabeh Bryan-Sasser-Blackmon,
daughter of; William Bryan (III),son of; Needham Bryan I,
of; William Bryan (II), son of; John Bryan, son of;
"Prince" William Smith Bryan (I), son of; Sir Francis
Bryan II, son of; Sir Francis Bryan I (also known as the
"Vicar of Hell") son of; Lady Baroness Margaret Bourchier-
Bryan, daughter of, Sir Humphrey Bourchier; son of, Anne
Plantagenet-Bourchier; daughter of, Sir Thomas Plantagenet
Duke of Eu, Gloucester, son of; King Edward Plantagenet III
of England and own up the Plantagenet line to Empreess
Matilda Cuthose to her father, William I, Duke of Normandy
and King of England known as William the Conqueror...
My paternal lineage back to my 4th. greatgrandfather was;
William Britton Jones I and wife, Mary Lee, daughter of
Anthony Furman Lee, and son of Richard Henry Lee. Deep
roots in heritage. Not all proud roots though! Events of
deceit and ruin befell many and my lines were there to
asist in one way or the other.
1860 US Federal Census Question, Marshall Co. and Tishomingo Co.

With consideration to the enumeration dates on the 1860 US Federal Census, there are two with similar families and I'm wondering if the James Stone and John Stone families are the same?

First family set:
1860 US Federal Census Twp 4 Range 1, Marshall, MS; James Stone b. 1834 AL, Sarah A Stone b. 1836 AL, Nancy Stone b. 1859 MS, Frances Brown b. 1794 NC. Enumerated 9 Aug 1860.

Confusing factor, note Frances Brown:
1850 US Federal Census Division 3, Tippah, MS: Jeremiah Stone family then further down, Frances Brown b. 1800 NC, John Stone b. 1827 AL. Enumerated 12 Dec 1850.

Second family set:
1860 US Federal Census Tishomingo, MS: John Stone b. 1827 AL, Sarah E Stone b. 1836 AL, Nancy J Stone b. 1859 MS, D[.] Thomas b. 1836 AL, Gideon Allen b. 1839 AR. Enumerated 20 Aug 1860. Marriage: John Stone to Sarah E Smith 7 Feb 1856, Tishomingo Co, MS.

John Stone b 1827 had a brother James Stone b abt 1832-1834 but did they have wives with similar names and daughters with similar names born about the same time?

I don't want to make assumptions here since the enumeration on the 1860 USFC Marshall Co., MS Census is before the 1860 USFC Tishomingo Co., MS Census when there is a similar family set on the 1870 USFC Marshall Co., MS in the same area of Marshall Co., MS as the 1860 USFC.

The 1870 USF Census Twp 4, Range 1 Marshall, MS; John Stone b. 1827 AL, Sarah Stone b. 1835 AL, Jane Stone b. 1859 AL.
