Re: STOEHR/ STARR

"Census of 1830 & 1840 show Catharine (Starr) Lauck was born in the 1750s, consistent with Catharine Stoehr/ Stehr/ Starr of Lebanon Twp., born 3 Sep. 1758, daughter of Joh. Philip Stoehr/ Starr of Lebanon Twp. Her father is listed in the 1755 Lebanon Twp. tax list as "Philip Star". She met and married her husband while Simon Lauck was an apprentice gunsmith in Lebanon, Penn. They named their 2nd son, Philip, likely after her father." (German custom of nameing children, 1st son is named after the father's father, 2nd son named after the mother's father.)

"[Compiler's notes: Catharine Starr, wife of Simon Lauck was definitely NOT born in 1766. An early researcher confused this Catharine (Stoehr/ Starr) Lauck with another Catharine Stoehr/ Starr of Virginia, born 25 Oct. 1766, a daughter of Casper Stoehr/ "Jasper Starr" of Virginia, and later of Rowan Co., N.C. That Catharine Starr, b. 1766, married Abraham Douthitt, Sr. about 1786, and they had a large family together. Although there was indeed a Catharine Starr of Virginia who was correctly born in 1766, she is not the same woman as the wife of Simon Lauck. This error has been repeated numerous times in multiple publications. (ref: Will of Jasper Starr - Casper/ Gasper Stoehr - written 19 Dec 1808, recorded Feb 1814 in Rowan Co., N.C.; named heirs include, "each of my deceased daughter, Catharine's children who was married to Abraham Douthit.") Proof that the correct wife of Simon Lauck is the Catharine Starr, b. 1758, of Lebanon Twp., is by process-of-elimination combined with the facts that Simon Lauck was enumerated as single on the Tax List of Lebanon Twp. Penn. at the start of 1782, and by 1783, he and Catharine baptized their first son in Lebanon Twp. When these facts are combined with Catherine Starr's true age, per the census records, there can be no doubt about her correct identity.]" by David S. Catherine Barbara Stoehr.
(also written Stehr, Stair, Stare, etc.), the daughter of Philipp Stoehr and Anna Maria Holler, was born on 3 September 1758 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. No additional information has been found concerning this
individual."

Willing to share information about the Lauck, Starr, Stoehr.
GlassByBeth@aol.com

or my website but the Lauck information is not updated yet.

Numerous records from the Bas-Rhin area of France are showing up now on the http://pilot.familysearch.org website and the Stoehr families are indexed as "Steyer". There are lots of them, and they go back a ways. Look for the French versions of names - Pierre instead of Peter, Jacques instead of Jacob, etc. and as they say in France, voila, there you'll have it!!
Cheers

I hope someone comes across this.

I was wondering if anyone has any information on the Storr family who owned land in Slovenia (Austria-Hungary back then) in the Celje/Store/Teharje area, in the 19th century (or even earlier?)."Store Steel" was later built on their land.

They were supposedly of German origin. My ancestors are from Teharje and the surname is spelt Štor today, but I've also come across some Stors from Teharje. Both the Štor and Stor families have mentioned a connection to the old Storr family, but nothing other than that. Any information would be greatly appreciated, because I simply don't know where to look.

Thank you.
Andreja, Zagreb, Croatia

Sometimes obituaries or local histories can contain this information. Look for information about siblings or cousins - you may find what you are looking for as often entire families came over and descendants of a sibling could have had more knowledge.

Also consider joining this project - the more participants we have, the better chance there will be for a genetic match. The origin of my own Stoehr/Stair family is not known; my earliest known ancestor was George Stoehr/Stair, who was born in Northampton County, Pa. in 1777. There are other Stoehr families who lived in eastern Pennsylvania at that time but the relationship between them is unknown.

--Tom

NO, they stayed in Pennsylvania.....they were from Barenthal, Hohenzollern, Germany and the line goes back...Martin Friderich (my ggrandfather) came from Germany, his father was Friederick, then Franz Xavier, Norbertus, Franciscus Carolus and Stephan Stohr (who was born in 1690)..that's as far back as I have.

I am looking for information on Andrew and Mary Stoehr who settled in Crawford County Wisconsin in the 1870s. I've seen their country of origin listed as "Germany", "Prussia", and "Austria." Andrew was born about 1839 and Mary about 1840. They had 6 children I know of: Anthony (b: about 1867 and he came with his parents from Germany/Prussia/Austria in 1875/6); Teresa (b: about 1870); Mary (b: about 1875); Agnes (b: 9 NOV 1877); Frank (b about 1878) and Joseph (b: AUG 1881). Anthony and Joseph never married. Teresa married Lincoln Heisz and Agnes married David Knoble. I would appreciate any information anyone has on this family. Thanks in advance.

My name is Martin Stor and I am working on the Stor familytree here in the Netherlands. First I thought the name Stor came from Scandinavia, but after some research I found out that it comes from Switzerland (Bern and Basel)and/or South Germany (About 1376!!!). There are so many spellings about this name, especially when some Stor/Stohr/Stoehr families went to the USA. Sometimes they changed their names into Starr, Stair, Sterr and so on. If I can help anyone with Stor/Stohr/Stoehr families in Germany and Holland I will try to help you. Is there anybody who can help me with these families in the USA. I will appreciate that.

Many Starrs are of English origin and others, as are some Stairs, of German (with Stoehr as the original surname). Other lines may be discovered as more participants join this project.
