Re: STOCKBRIDGE - MA or NH > Steuben Co NY

Hi Jason,

I believe that I might know a little about Mary Stockbridge. My 2nd great-grandmother was her sister, Tirzah Stockbridge, born 28 Sep 1798 in NH. I don't have an exact town but the family was probably living in or near Newmarket or Durham, NH area because Tirzah's husband, Benjamin Sias Smith was born in Newmarket,Rockingham, NH. I was given a family photo recently that was a photo of Mary and on the back was some important information, as yet unconfirmed by records, that Tirzah & Mary's parent died while they were young and raised by a Stevens Family. I also have a photo of Mary Stockbridge and husband Robert, without his last name. I hope this means there is a connection to your Colliers. BTW, one of the photos of Mary was made by a Canadian photographer in Hamilton, Ontario which is nearby to Bath, NY. Also on the back of the photo is Mary's birthdate: 2 Sep 1800 and Robert's birthdate of 12 Mar 1796 and it says both were buried at Eagle Valley near Sloane (sp?)and that they had 12 children. I can't seem to find that cemetery. Do you know if the family stayed in the Bath area?

Tirzah's death certificate lists her parents as John & Mary Stockbridge of England. I have been unable to find any information on the parents.

Hope this helps.
Abby

Hi,
I am also a descendant of Stephen and Mary Ann Stockbridge. They were my GG Grandparents through their youngest son Robert Thomas. They had 17 children so have many relatives. I own Stephen's gardening book and have visited the house he built in Brooklyn although it is no longer there. I am looking into their families thay left behind in Buckinghamshire and would like to know more about them. I know his father was also Stephen and his mother Martha Craibe but the only Martha I can find on the census 1841 is 80 years old. Can anyone fill in any gaps for me here? Thanks Jenny

Hi Ron,

I don't have a William born 1827 nor do I have an Ada Stockbridge. My Jonathan's parents were William and Elizabeth Peters who married in Melbourn in 1803. They had the following children: William 1804, Sarah 1806, Thomas 1809, Ann 1810, Mary 1811, Jonathan 1813-1857, Elizabeth 1815, Susannah 1818, Joseph 1821 and Jane 1823. One of these children may be your William's parent.

Good luck with your research.

Regards,

Melanie
Bowral NSW
Looking for information on the family of Sarah Stockbridge b 8/26/1801 in Bath Maine. She is the daughter of Joseph and Sarah(Mitchell) Stockbridge. She married Alpheus W. Boynton 3/14/1824 in Bath and died 5/1/1837 in Bath. Sarah is supposedly a descendant of John Stockbridge the immigrant.
Thanks,
Allen Boynton

A friend of a friend has asked me to find any information possible about his heritage. Tall order for a novice. I've told him to send away for his birth certificate and, in the meantime, I would post some queries.

Paul was born 13 JUL 1962 in Chelsea, MA and baptized in Somerville, MA.

His biological mother was a nurse who died in childbirth. Paul was put up for adoption through Catholic Charities who are notorious about keeping secrets.

His adoptive parents are Charles E. Stockbridge b: 10 JAN 1927 and Arlene T. O'Neill b: 24 May 1929.

If anybody has any idea what I should do next, please contact me.

Thanks!

I have a darling picture of two young women that I found in my grandmothe's things. The back says "To Kathleen from Hazel Stockbridge" Kathleen was my grandmother. Her maiden name was Allan and she married George wesley Edwards in Colorado. None of the family is familiar with this young woman. It appears that they might be sisters and I believe the picture was taken before 1915. I would be happy to share the picture.

Kathleen Leveroni

Hi Neale,
are you talking about Stephen Stockbridge senior born great marlow england in 1812 who married Msry Ann Archer? I don't know much about them and incidentally my maiden name was Archer and I have wondered if there was a connection. I don't know any of Stephen juniors siblings and would love to know more. He is my ggg grandfather I think. I will try and get hold of that book. I live in Brisbane but still have relatives in Wellington where I was born. I would be thrilled to hear anymore info on Stephen senior if it is the right one.

regards Erica

Stephen junior died falling off a cart when he was 41. He was married to Eliza Mason my gg grandmother. hence the name Mason perhaps. We share the same ggg grandfather but by whom are we connected?

Hi Erica

I'm sure were talking about the same Stephen Stockbridge(senior) who arrived on the London. He is my ggg grandfather. I'm afraid I don't know too much about this side of the family either.

Unfortunately, Stephen Stockbridge died on 20 June 1865 by drowning after he fell off Queen's Wharf (WGTN) on his way to board a boat at night.

The "Papers Past" website has a lot of old newpapers which can be read online. For the Wellington Independent on 22 June 1865 there are a couple of articles about Stephen's death.
One of these articles states "He was accompanied on to the Queen's Wharf by a friend of the name of Mason, who wished to see him off" - could this be a relative?

The nursery was at Ohiro which is now part of Brooklyn. I live a couple of km away

Cheers

Neale

I am searching for an Olive Stockbridge that I believed married an ALWAY and/or ELPHICK

Olive would have been born about c1865/70 as she was listed on the birth certificate of Madeline Lily ELPHICK in 1891 as the mother, although it said Olive Elphick, formerly Alway. In the 1891 census there was an Arthur Stockbridge living with them and listed as "brother-in'law" and he was single. I am presuming it was Olive's brother

If this rings any bells for you, I would love to hear from you

Judy
BC Canada
