I'm trying to find the correct birth record for William Stewart born in Dalkeith in Scotland between 1840 and 1845. He married Louisa Wood in 2nd June 1877 in Brighton where his father is listed as James Stewart an iron moulder and deceased. William is shown as 31 years of age on the marriage certificate suggesting he was born around 1846. The census records between 1881 and 1911 suggest he was born around 1844. His joined the military in 1860 and his papers suggest he was born in 1840, although I realise people would often lie about their age when joining up. William's death registration shows he was 77 when died in 1917 suggesting again he was born in 1840. The problem I have is I can't find a birth record that matches these dates with a father named James. Could he have lied about his fathers name on his marriage certificate and if so why?
