I am Danish national living in Switzerland.

My mothers grandfather was called Axel-Julius Steuer. He had 10 brothers and sisters named ,,,,

Alfred, Charles, Johannes, Vilhelm, Oscar, Helene, Laura, Magnus, Emil - one died.

We have a letters from a Bruce K. Steuer (1979) suggesting that we are talking about the same family as locations, times and all names match.

Perhaps we should talk?

MRS. GEORGE (MARY STEUER) BERLET
JULY 9, 1909

The death of Mrs. George Berlet occurred on Thursday (July 8) morning at about five o'clock at the Chatsworth sanitarium, where she underwent an operation last week.
Mary Steuer was born in New York City, November 20, 1853. At the age of twelve, with her mother, she moved to Kankakee, Illinois, where they resided until 1869, when they moved to Chatswroth. On February 22, 1875, she was united in marriage with George Berlet, since which time she had resided in Germanville township. Before leaving New York she united with the Evangelical church and remained a consistent member until death.
Mrs. Berlet is survived by her husband and seven children as follows; Lizzie Drilling; John, Edward, Amelia Perkins; Albert, George and Mayme, the last three being still at home. Two sons and one daughter preceded their mother in death.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning July 10, at the Chatsworth Evangelical church at ten o'clock and interment will be at the Chatsworth cemetery.

first of all, I have to tell you that I was wrong my mother (maiden name: Josefine Stüer) is not a direct descendant of Mathias as I thought. When asking my mother the other day she told me that she is a direct descendant of Mathias younger brother Carl who was born on 3/19/1827.

Now I'm going to tell you all I know about Mathias and Charlotte and their children.

They had 5 children altogether:

1. Steven Stuer
2. Cathrine Stuer (b. 24 Mar 1851 - Houston, TX)
3. Louis (Lewis) Stuer (b. 18 Jan 1854 - Houston, TX)
4. Roger Henry (Heinrich Rogerium) Stuer (b. 11 Feb 1856 - Houston, TX d. 20 Feb 1887)
5. Catharine Maria Stuer (b. 17 May 1857-Houston, TX d. 1905)
Catharine married Henry Stoppel (Stopple) on Febr. 16 1882
They had four children:
1. Edward Stoppel
2. Emma Stoppel
3. Addie Stoppel
4. Clarence Stoppel

Unfortunately, I do not know any birth or death details of them. But I do hope that this info will help you in your further investigations.

Hi, I am sure we are descendants of the same Peter Steuer, born 1795 in Zilling, Alsace Lorraine. His three sons were Jacob b.1816, Peter b.1823 and Adam b.1826. My ggrandfather was George Johan Steuer who married Sophia Peters in Fisherville and later relocated to Dashwood where my grandmother Anna Luella Steuer was born in 1905.

The line is Adam Steuer 1825-1908 m Katherine Bier 1829-1912 both died in Fisherville; George Johann Steuer 1868-1940 m Sophia Peters 1867-1949 both died in Dashwood; Anna Luella Steuer 1905-1971 m William Joshua Snell 1897-1969 both died in London Ont.;Dorothy Evelyn Snell 1926-2001 m Ernest Ross McCutchen 1923-, she died in Port colborne. I am Ruthanne Mccutcheon 1943- .

Klara would have beenborn about 195 in Poland.She and her family lived in Essen Germany and she reportedly died in a hospital around the time of Kristallnacht. Her husband, Aron Leib was sent to the camps and died in Dachau.

Hello and good seeing you again! Thank you for the information. I was able to use this to search our US census records. Let me ask, on both 1860 and 1870 Texas census records, there is a
Frank Stuer/Stier listed on the same page as Mathias and Albertine. Did Mathias and Carl also have a younger brother Frank, born in 1840's?

If your mom is a descendant of Carl, can you give me her line up to and including Carl?

Would you or your mom by chance happen to have information dating prior to Mathias and Carl? Do you know who their parents were and where they were born?

I will most likely never be able to trace backward beyond Mathias since it appears he immigrated here and left family back home.

Do you have information on when Mathias immigrated to the United States and from where he disembarked, where he arrived and on what ship? Did Carl ever make the
trip to the U.S.?

Using the 1870 and 1880 Texas census records, I did manage to find five of the six children you mentioned Mathias had with Albertine. Alvina (b. 1862), Catherine (b. 1865), Anna (b. 1869), Emma (b. 1872), Helena (b. 1875). Do you know who the 6th child was? Perhaps one died between census years or one was born shortly after the 1880 census.

I also found another Dulberg from Germany who got married about the same time Charlotte did. I found Catherine Wilhelmi Dulberg married Gottlieb Huth in July 1847
in Houston. Would you or your mom happen to know if Charlotte or Catherine were sisters?

On one of the 1880 census records I found a girl with the last name of Stoppel, age 1, living with her grandparents in a house near where Mathias was living. The grandparents she was living with were Frederich and Fredericke Jacho. This appears to be Edde (or Adde) and may be one of the Stopple children you listed below.

Some pieces starting to fall into place.

I am trying to figure out my relationship to you? What is your relationship to Carl? great-grandfather, great-great grandfather or ggg-grandfather?

I will write more later after I search some more.

Hello!! I did get this and this is very exciting news! Do you really think it was an accident? I have hit a roadblock with this side of my tree for years. Since this post in 2004, I have found Mathias had married Albertine Polzin in 1861 near Houston. I have never been able to find any children of Mathias other than Louis.

I have Louis Steers Jones born in 1851 near Houston. Louis ran away when he was young because he did not like his step mother. He changed his name to John and then the more comment variant Jones after settling in Louisiana. This is an entire story I would like to share. The headstone where he is buried shows dates as 1851-1942.

Louis' death certificate shows age 91 and his death date, but no birthdate, so the 1851 has been deduced from census records and other documentation.

I am hoping you have the key to unlocking this mystery for me!!

Do you happen to have information on Mathias, Charlotte and Albertine as well as any children they had? You mentioned your mother was a direct descendant of Mathias. Is she a direct descendant of Charlotte or Albertine? Either way you and I are cousins...

I am really looking forward to communicating with you and helping to complete all of the missing pieces to my father's side of the family.

I have two more generations before that yet. I just recently found your info, you coming from Steuer-Snell. All I had p[reviosuly was one Snell name. My mother-in-law's maiden name was Steuer. Her parternal grandparents were listed on the the 1920 US records from Germany. However, she told me that her father's family came from the Austro-Hungarian region. His name was in fact Edward, or some variation.

Our Grandfather's name was Aaron Lieb Steuer. He migrated from Poland and settled in Essen Germany before the Nazzi uprising and the Holocaust. He married Klara Fahan (Fahn). He was born in 1900 and was killed at Dachau. We are not certain what happened to Klara. She may have been killed during a bombing of a hospital during the war, but we do not know. Dora, Betty, and Antoinette escaped and survived through the aid and help of others.

This could not be the same Klara. Our Grandmother had to be born much sooner. My Mother, her daughter was born in 1929. She and her two sisters escaped from Essen, Germany during the Holocaust.

Hi,I am Chava Moskowitz my mother was Hanna Ramer nee Steuer, my mom, her whole life was always looking for blood relatives.

She connected with two first cousins, Anne Steuer from Essen and Max Tepper from Gelsenkirchen, Germany. We also connected with the Braunstein family David Braunstein was married to Elsche Fahn. They had 7 children. One of ther sons Julie Branstein was a soldier that found my mother in England during the war.

My mom grandparents were Bendet Fahn married to Debora Steuer. They had six children;

1.Nuchem (Fahn) Steuer married to Ruchel Schmemer; they had a daughter Anne and two sons Anne Labaton survived the war not her brotheres. She lived in Florida and passed away a few years ago

2. Sara(Fahn)married to Shlomo Tepper, they had one son Max Tepper that survived and two sisters that did not survive.

3.Leib Fahn Married to Klara(Goldstein); from my understanding they had three girls one was Dora and they were hidden by Gentiles. I know that my mom with her two first cousins went to see them after the war in NY and they did not want to connect to the family. The youngest of the three girls they convinced to come live with them in Passaic, NJ she did but then returned to her sisters.

Many years later my mom was in Beth Israel Hospital for blood tansfusions and sure enough Dora was a nurse in the hospital. They connected but she didnt want to discuss the past.

4.Jona & Rachel Fahn, we have no information on them( I was in Essen cemetary about 10 years ago, I think Jona passed a away young before the war, there was a monumnet in the cemetary with his name)

5.Libbe Fahn married Bernard Ramer, they had a one an onloy daughter named Hanna (Gertzulin) she was my mom she survived the war was sent to England as aq young child. She passed awat May 2000 in a car accident with her son Yaakov Ber named after my grandfather

6. Rifka, it seems that she was not maried my mother always said to us children when one of us have a child and can give a name she would love someone to remember her and name Rivka; so far it was not done.

Where were they from before the war? Austria? There is a Klara who was deported from Austria born 1925. It is by accident that I read your message about Mathias Stüer. My mother's maiden name is Stüer and she is a direct descendent of Mathias. You are right Mathias married Charlotte Dulberg in June 1850. They had a son Louis (Lewis) Born on Jan. 18, 1954 in Houston Texas. After Charlotte's death Mathias married Albertine Polzin in March 1861. They had 6 more children.

I hope that you will get this message as you posted your query in 2004 already.
