Surnames: Stephens, Stephenson, Carr, Corbitt, English, Johnson
I have no clue if anyone is still looking in on this thread....

My Norris Stephenson shows as Stephens on most records & Stephenson on a few .

He was married to Sarah Ann "Sally" Carr, daughter of Elisha Carr & Holland A. Corbitt.
I have both sets of Sally's grandparents as well. Holland's obit lists her children & their spouses, including, her daughter, Sarah & husband, Norris Stephenson as well as Holland & Elisha's parents

Norris & Sarah's marriage record list them as Norris Stephens & Sally Ann Carr.
My line comes through their son Carr Stephenson & his wife Margaret English, through their daughter, Addie Rebecca & her husband, Walter Lee Johnson ( my g grandparents).

The census's I have come across with both surname spellings match up with given names, date, & location of them & their children. All but one of Norris's military documents list him as Norris Stephens, only one as Norris Stephenson.

I have yet to figure out who Norris's parents & their family were.

I hope this helps & please if you have info on Norris's parents, I'd be happy to know.

Thanks,
Mary Johnson

P.S. I have Norris & Sarah's children as:

William Henry
Mills W
Carr (my line)
Margaret A
Louisa
Henrietta
Sarah C (May be Sarah Catherine, as this name is popular in Sally's family. This is the one seen as Salina in census transcription)

P.S. I removed Martha as a child of Norris & Sally, as she was born a few year prior to the marriage. She shows on census at 8 years old as Stephens.. 10 years later she is still living with them & Carr is her last name. I now think she is Sally's niece.

Also, I do not believe Norris changed his name. Mistakes are often made when the people recording the documents are not familiar with a family name & spell it as it sounds and/or shortens it. You will see it as Stephens, Stephenson, Stevens, & Stevenson. There does seem to be a Norris family connected to the Stephenson's around Isle Of Wight County, so Norris may be his given name as shown, & not Morris as some might think.

There was also a Morris family & Stephens family in IOW as well, so anything is possible.
