STEER - Belmont County, Ohio - Society of Friends

STEER, ELISHA B. -- a well-known representative farmer of Belmont County, Ohio, residing on his fine farm of 94 acres, located on section 7, range 3, Colerain township, was born on a farm which adjoins his own on the south on June 2, 1850.

His parents were Israel and Rebecca (Bracken) Steer, more extended mention of whom will be found in another part of this volume.
Our subject was educated in the local public schools and at Mount Pleasant, Ohio, assisting his father in the latter's farming operations much of the time.
When about 25 years of age he began his own agricultural career and has been very successful, raising the usual products of this locality, making wheat a specialty.
In growing this grain Mr. Steer has demonstrated that proper knowledge of soil, seed and fertilizer has much to do with its yield in Ohio, his own being very satisfactory.
He has raised over 50 bushels of wheat to the acre, and as this is an unusual yield for Belmont County, much credit must be given for his intelligent methods of cultivation.
On May 22, 1876, Mr. Steer was married to Ellen C. Gilbert, a native of Pennsylvania, and a daughter of George and Hannah (Cope) Gilbert, both of whom are deceased, the former dying in 1872.
Five children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Steer, as follows: Louisa, wife of Wallace J. Bundy; Alfred G., a graduate of Westtown Friends' Boarding School, who has been for four years with a Philadelphia firm engaged in the sale of dairy machinery; Wilmer I., a graduate of Bliss Business College in 1902, is employed as head bookkeeper for the Belmont Telephone Company of Bridgeport, Ohio, and Alice R. and Florence H., at home.
Mr. Steer has been a prominent factor in educational enterprises to the best of his ability.
His interesting family is one to do credit to the county and all are most highly esteemed and all are birthright members of the Society of Friends, of which Mr. Steer is a recognized minister.
Mr. Steer is not only one of the best farmers of Belmont County, Ohio but he is highly respected in business and social relationships, ranking with the leading and reliable men of this section.

Centennial History of Belmont County, Ohio, and Representative Citizens, edited by A.T. McKelvey, 1903

Hello Caroline,

I am trying to reach out to UK relatives of Percy Steer, after a man named Liam Humphrey tried to reach some members of my family without success. His contact information got lost in the process, and by the time my dad and I heard about it, we couldn't answer back.

After the war, Percy went back to France, and had 6 or 7 children (I don't know much about it as I never had a lot of information on my dad's part of the family), including my grand-mother.

This is a long shot given the date of your message, but we would be really happy to learn more.

Best,
Laure

Ray, I have just found your email.
My GG Grandfather was George Bollen (Dr) (father William Henry Bollen) and my GG Grandmother Rebecca Steer (father James Steer)

They arrived in Port Adelaide on the ship Albemarle in 1856. George Bollen was a Cooper by trade when he arrived in South Australia and then became a Doctor, councillor and Mayor. The family lived in Mt. Barker and Semaphore.

Unfortunately I do not have much information about George when he was living in Brighton.
I believe George was the only child of William Henry Bollen from William's second marriage. I do not know the name of George's mother.

That's about all I know as far as ancestors of George. I do know more about George and Rebecca and their family living in Australia.
Can I be of any help to your friend (even though your request for information was placed on this site 10 years ago).

Cheers

Belinda Day (gg Grand daughter of George and Rebecca Bollen)

Thanks Jim
My branch of the Steer family are from Alberta. Until recently we had not known much about the family. What we did know was that William J Steer was my great grandfather, his wife was Angeline Phelps, and they lived in Jansen, Nebraska. William had two sisters, Clara and Nellie, and twin brothers, George and Edward. The only pictures that we have are of William and the twins in their sixties or seventies, so indentifing some of your pictures are difficult. I will show them to my Dad and see if he can indentify anyone. It is interesting to see Robinsons' also in Nebraska. We have narrowed down that William probably moved to the States in 1891/92 but do not know the reason he moved. William's parents were John Steer and Elizabeth Shoebotham.
More later, Rob

Sarah Faunt was their Grandmother on their mother's side. Would like to see your photo and compare it to the ones I have.

Did you ever hear back from Sally Dow? I have heard that my great-great grandfather Alfred Hulford was raised by an aunt who married George Steer in Ontario. Must be the same Alfred. I come through Alfred's daughter Ellen, who may have been named after the aunt who raised Alfred. Do any of the Steers have information about our Alfred Hulford?

Hi Phil

I have a query from your very interesting information. You refer to Joseph Steer b 1845 who married Elizabeth L. My greatgrandfather was Joseph Steer b 1845 of Brixham who married Charlotte Louisa Downton. He (according to family information) was a master mariner who was lost at sea in the 1890's in the Bay of Biscay. Are you sure your Joseph married Elizabeth.

Kind regards

Ian Radford

I have just discovered that I have a Sydney John Steer b 1877 Lingfield, Surrey married into my Sellwood family. I have him and his wife, Charlotte Anna (Annie) Sellwood b1872 in 1911 with 2 children. Stanley 1904 and Gwendoline 1907, both born Lingfield.
What I am trying to find out is whether there are any descendants of those two, and anything after 1911 of their parents.

If you search the GRO marriage index on Ancestry (may be on FreeBMD) you'll find Stanley Gilbert E STEER (full name from GRO Births) married Kathleen MORROW in the Steyning registration area 3Q 1928 2b 751. GRO Births have two STEER births with the mother's maiden name of MORROW. Gwendoline Agatha I STEER married Frank R BUNKER in the Steyning registration district 4Q 1932 2b 815, no children noted. I also noted the birth of a Sydney J STEER 2Q 1916 2b 441 Steyning registration district, mother's maiden name SELLWOOD. Sydney's parents William died 1909 and Anna 1906 in the Godstone registration district which had taken over Lingfield from East Grinstead.
I am not related, just researching the STEER name in West Kent & East Surrey, see the Rootsweb STEER Mailing List Archives. Regards,
Stephen Steere, Orpington, Kent.

Hi, I am seeking information on CHARLES LOWRY STEER, born in Dodbrooke Devon in 1829. Parents Henry Steer & Sarah Lowry. I have his birth record & have located him in the 1841 census as a 12 year old Smith's Apprentice living in Dodbrooke. But I can't find any record of him at all after the 1841 census, hopefully someone out there might know! Thanks

Dear Andy, Viv and Lorna and others,

Your messages were eventually posted to the Steer Roots Group. I believe that William Sture, the furthest back I can get with the family you all mention, is a brother of George Sture [1684-1760] from whom I am descended.

I am pasting what I have on the "Jasper Steers" after my signature. I hope it help and would appreciate any corrections or further information.
W. Stare England/ William Steer Ireland

I come from the William Steer line that immigrated to the US and ended up in Pennsylvania. Prior to that they were in Northern Ireland and I get stuck at William Steer. I have all of his information, but I am looking for his parents and the link that our ancestor W. Stare was burnt at the stake in Canterbury England in 1555. It is in alo the research and even printed in Fox's book. I am looking for the connection and to see what i can prove. From William and down I am highly documented it is his parents that keep throwing me for a loop and I have a feeling it is because his parents immigrated to Northern Ireland and that they were Quakers. Any help would be awesome and I thank you in advance!

Hello, thank you for your message I was looking for A Steer RAMC because my sister-in-law found a walking stick knob in a field in Dorset and it had A Steer RAMC. on the top. It is a bit battered but we thought his family might like it back. Please let me know if this is so.

Hi Mark,

Caroline's parents were Sarah Ann Monder & John Willcocks. They lived next door or next door but one to the Steers in Kent Street, Grimsby - check the 1871 census. I haven't seen that website, but I have found that most of the information about our family line on the web comes from what I have put up, most of it from research by Alan Steer that he kindly sent me several years ago.

Regards,

Terry

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the info on Jasper Charles. There are other Jaspers in the family he could have confused your Jasper with.

Yes I am the JT Steer who put the information on Ancestral File. Unfortunately, some of it got altered between me & LDS, so some of it is not correct, and they won't let me correct it.

Regards,

Terry

Hi Cousin Mark,

My Grandfather, John Willcox STEER, told me that he had a brother Jasper,
who served in the Metropolitan Police. He was a bit ga-ga at the time he
told me, and I have been unable to find a connection with Jasper Charles &
the Met, other than the fact he married in London.

Regards,

Terry Steer

Seeking more information on Emma STEER b. 15 Oct Devonshire, England

Hi, I'm seeking more information on my maternal ggggrandmother Emma STEER. I know she was born in Devonshire, England on 15 October, but I have no idea which year. She died on 12 October 1951 in Lowell, MA. I got all of this information from talking to my grandmother, so some of the dates could be slightly off. I also know that she married Albert MILLER, but I don't know when or where. He is also from England, though I’m not sure which part, and was a mariner when they lived in Chelsea, MA. According to my grandmother he was lost at sea. They had at least one child, Herbert James MILLER, born 21 November 1891 in Chelsea, MA. He married Mary Francis HINES and died July 1940 in Tewksbury, MA. I would appreciate any information about Emma’s husband or son, what year she was born, when she came to the United States, and who her parents were.
Thank you!
Ellen Valley
University of Connecticut
Undergraduate
Hi Terry,
Not sure if you have come across this website www.familytrees.genpro.co./appleeshaw/steer
goes back to Thomas Sture b.1721 d.1781 who leads onto William Steer and Caroline Willcox our gg Grandparents.
I'm not sure but I think Caroline Willcox parents were Edward Willcox and Sarah Ann Barrett. They married July/Sept 1848 in Sulcoates, Hull. Sarah Ann Willcox and daughter Caroline appear in census 1861 and 1871. Sarah Ann indicates birth in Brixham (Buxholme)not Hull as Sarah Ann Monder. Caroline was born in Hull but baptised in Brixham indicating strong link with Brixham/Devon.Caroline's younger sister, Theresa M. b. abt in 'Buxholme'(I think this is alternative old name for Brixham? What do you think??

Regards,

Mark Steer
Jasper Charles Steer born 1881 Grimsby

I am new to RootsWeb. I have been researching my family history for a couple of years and am wondering if anyone has information on Jasper Charles Steer born 1881 in New Clee Grimsby. Parents William Steer and Caroline Willcox. I know he was in the army from about 1899 to 1904 and fought in the 2nd South African War.He married Sarah Annie Morris 31st December 1905. I have not found him in 1911 census and wonder if anyone may have information as to where he was then.

I have found very good website for this branch of Steer family - www.familytrees.genpro.com/appleshaw/Steer
Hi Terry,

Thanks your message. As far as I know, Jasper Charles was not in the Met. He was in the army 3rd Dragoons (Prince of Wales) during about 1899 and 1904. He served in South Africa and was wounded in February 1901. He subsequently served in Russia and China - both locations he managed to contract maleria! On his marriage certificate 31 December 1905, his occupation appears to be 'electrician' but it's not very readable. He joined up to army again in 1917 in Railway Operating Division Royal Engineers until discharge early 1918 due to ill health. Info from Army medical report that I have copy of.
I'm not sure but he seems to have had a connection with Russia - verbal family history but also 2 of his daughters had Russian names - Gwenith OLGA born 7/7/1910 and NADIA (Nadja?) born March 1920. I'm not sure but I think he died in Southampton about 1970 - despite living in Hampshire at that time I unfortunately never met him. If you would like copies of his marriage certificate and army medical record - please ask. By the way are you the JT Steer that posted Steer tree on Family Seaerch website under Ancestral files? Very interesting!

Best regards,
Mark Steer

My email is igsgenealogy@iinet.net.au, or just Google "steer family Perth" to find my home page, and the family tree.

Ian
