My GGG-grandmother was Rebecca Steen, who married Police Sergeant Samuel Alexander Wray and had the following children - all born in Ireland, according to later censuses in Scotland: Margaret Jane Wray (born anywhere between 1st April 1843 and 21st Nov. 1851, as her age on different documents varies), died 28 Feb 1927 in Port Glasgow, Scotland; Samuel Wray (born between 13 Apr 1840 and 4 Apr 1841, died 12 Apr 1882 in Port Glasgow, Scotland; and William Wray, age unknown. The family seems to have moved to Port Glasgow around 1873. Margaret's son William John Douglas was born in the city of Derry in 1871; Samuel married Sarah Davis in St. Columb's Cathedral (Templemore) (Church of Ireland) , Londonderry, in 1865.
According to Rebecca's death certificate (died aged 56 on 23 July 1882 in Port Glasgow), her father was Joseph Steen, farmer (deceased by 1882).
I.e. her date of birth should be between 24 July 1825 and 23 July 1826. In the 1881 Scottish census, she's 59, but that could be a transcription error.
That's all I've found so far.
I've got in touch over the net with a descendant of Samuel Wray (in Scotland), who sent me a copy of a letter in his family's possession from Samuel's brother William, who emigrated to the USA. In 1873 he wrote to his brother offering to send him a ticket to join him there, in Spring Hill, Pennsylvania. That can surely not be a coincidence - I was looking at
http://members.aol.com/steenew/history/index.htm and I note that Spring Hill is in the neighbouring county to Chestnut Level. Anyway, Samuel decided to remain in Scotland.
I'd be very interested to hear if anyone recognises any of this.

I can definitely recommend this free site, which has an excellent Smatchmatching facility which has already put me in touch with others sharing the same ancestors. Gencircles also has the advantage of automatically hiding data for the living from all but its owner.
At the moment, though, searching doesn't work, so instead of searching for Rebecca Steen, click on S, Steen, and Rebecca Steen and start browsing from there.
I'm Scottish, from Renfrew, but now living in Denmark.
