STEEL/STEELE originating in the UK

My Grandfather was Robert Tayler STEEL, born Aug 16 1892, in Croydon, Surrey. His Father was William Lloyd Tayler STEEL, born Oct 14 1857, in Greenwich, Kent. Most of the messages on the STEEL/STEEL Message Boards are relevant to the US. Is any researcher involved in STEEL/STEELE family history in the UK? I have not hit a brick wall. It's a mountain!!

I'm searching for my STEEL/STEELE family in the UK. So far my search is back to the early 1700s in Worcestershire & Oxfordshire, England for STEEL.. My 3rd,4th & 5th grt. grandfathers were born in Worcestershire. My 3rd grt. gandfather died in Cropredy, Oxfordshire in 1853. In abt. 1801 in Banbury, Oxfordshire my 2nd grt. grandfather was born. This was the moment when my family's surname changed from STEEL to STEELE. Good luck in your search.Have you used Ancestry UK.com? How about IGI (Church of Later Day Saints)? Parish Records

Yes, I have used Ancestry-UK, IGI and parish records but my STEEL(E) ancestors seem to have disappeared. I have come to the conclusion that maybe the recorder had found yet another spelling for the name, but I have not reached it yet!

You do not give any dates for your Grandfather. When (approximately) was he born? How much information do you have on him up to your 'brick wall'?

Hi, I'm looking for information on a Hannah Steele, who married William Henry Oliphant and had a daughter, Emma Oliphant, b 23 Jul 1876, 16 Queen Elizabeth St, Southwark, London. They (or at least William) had another daughter, Mary Ann ( Polly) Oliphant, b either 1873 in Shoreditch, London, or possibly 1867 Bermondsey, London. I do not know Hannah or William's ages, though would expect they married some time around 1866-1873 (unless there are more undiscovered children). Any info appreciated. I cannot find them in the 1881 census

Hello Mark,
Thank you, this is very helpful to us STEEL(E) researchers. It never ceases to amaze me how some recorders are able to change last names. Many times when I look at the original documents I cannot deduce how they arrived at their decisions.
