I am the ex-wife of Paul Robert Stead son of Paul Fredrick Stead. Paul F, Harold, Raymond, and Mabel(Marsh) all lived in Steubenville, Ohio. Since my ex-father-in-law was much younger than his siblings, there was minimal contact between any of them. Another brother died in Steubenville from being badly burned in the back yard. All I know. Good luck on your search. There appears to be some info back into West Virginia for a generation or two. I plan to pick this up again in 2013. I would guess that most of what I find will be from the Ancestry site. You might try newspaperarchives.com if you know a location. Their charge is pretty reasonable.

Matilda Stead and Jabez Pickett Stead

Hello,

I am looking for information about my Great-great grandma's family. Her name was Matilda Stead and she was born about 1870 in Indiana. She married Harlow Anderson, but died when she was only 25 (April 1895). She left behind a 6-year-old son, Charles Bruce (My great grandpa) and a 4-year-old daughter Lulu.

Her parents Jabez Peckitt Stead (who went primarily by Peckitt– I'm not sure of the spelling as I have seen it several ways) and his wife Nancy. Jabez was born in Indiana around 1836. His parents (William and Hannah) were from England and died between 1860-1870 in LaGrange Co, Indiana. Jabez died in Springfield twp, Indiana in February of 1905.
All I know about his wife is that her name was Nancy and she was born around 1834 in New York. They had one other child (that I know of), a son, Bruce, who was born around 1863.

If anyone has information about this line of Steads that they are willing to share I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Sorry to hear you know no more. How did you find Thomas's grandparents names? Are you related like me? In which case where do you come on the tree? Were the Marshalls your forebears? My interest is that I'm writing about Thomas Stead's neice Mary Ann Chadwell. She was cousin of my gt gt gt grandmother - Mary Ann Gabb nee Stead.

Alice Nissen

Hi,

Regretfully, not - I have searched high and low. He was born before 1775, too - he was having children by 1779! He had a sister Elizabeth and another sister Mary Ann who married Daniel James Chadwell. He does not exist in the 1841 census, which isn't much help, and I cannot find his birth (circa 1750 -1760). Possibly son of Thomas and Elizabeth Stead who appeared in London in 1752 for son Thomas's christening - then disappeared again!

Thomas Stead was Surveyor for the Bloomsbury Estate in London in the early 19th c. One daughter married into the Baker-Gabb family and another into the Marshall family. There were no sons. Has anyone found any information about Thomas's father, who was a plasterer? I don't know his first name and so haven't been able to find any information about him, nor about his mother.

Re: Holgate Stead

I do remember Holgate and Eva. I'm glad to hear you have so much information on him. I have copies of both his birth certificates, but not of his death certificates. I remember the problems registering his death at the time. My memory tells me that he and Eva died within a few months of one another, but 1940 seems a too early.
Through interpretation rather than fact I thought he was probably Bryan's son, but not Nancy's. Perhaps, looking at the census and his variety of names and ages, he was Margaret's illegitimate child, born when Bryan was still with Nancy. I am not sure if Margaret was Barker or Taylor at that time.
Holgate spoke about Mary Stead as his "half sister" who did not get on with her "step mother" so that would follow. Mary was "10 years older" than Holgate, which would make 1846 his correct birth date. According to Holgate, they both went to Oz at the same time. I have not been able to find any record of that nor any information about him whilst he was there, so I would love to hear more. Do you know where I can get hold of the booklet?
I know that Holgate and Eva lived in Yarraville at one stage and they had a smallholding. Apparently,he was a good carpenter. I did get round to wondering what else he got up to in Victoria and exactly why they came back.
Do you know the name of the aunt who died and left him the coalmerchant's business? I think it could have been Hannah Stead who died in 1895 and lived in Great Horton.
It is interesting to hear that Doris was born in transit. She always thought she was born in Oz. I know she collected a tapeworm on the journey back and was ill for many years afterwards.
I should also be interested to know where Bryan originated as I have not managed to find any birth record. Also Elizabeth Bruce (or was she Breeze) and John Anderson.
Hi Lesley
My brother Martin has copies of both Holgates' birth certificates and both death certificates too. We have a copy of their marriage certificate as well. We have traced his voyage out to Aus etc. but have not solved the mystery of who his parents were. I have been in contact with Dad's relatives in Aus but they can only tell us about Eva's family (have you got a copy of the booklet they produced? They did all the work on that side for us!).
Yes I think we did meet once as children but I met your parents on several occasions.
By the way only Ethel was born in Aus and Doris was born on the voyage back. Clare was born on their return to Yorkshire.

Thank you for the message. You must be my cousin Susan. I believe we met only once when we were children. I hope life has treated you well!
Yes, I would be interested in finding out about Holgate. Here is the mystery: my grandfather celebrated his birthday on March 9th. This is an unforgettable fact as it was my mother's birthday (Flo) and mine (Lesley). The Holgate born in 1846 was born on 9th March - supposed to have died aged four. The Holgate born 10 years later was born in late March. He admitted to being much older than Eva by some 18 years, but I am wondering how much older.Eva was born in 1868, I believe. The only research I have done is on the 'net, but I have worked back as far as our "First Fleeters." Any extra information would be much appreciated.
