Returns For Murder Trial. Love of Girl Brought Young Alabamian Home to Face Charge.

Birmingham, Ala., Oct. 2. - After every trace of his whereabouts had been lost, Dee Statum, a young white man, will face his trial on the charge of murder alleged to have occurred six years ago, Monday, October 12, in the Jefferson county criminal court.

...Six years ago it is alleged that he became engaged in a quarrel with Joseph Watts, near Brookside. A fight ensued, knives were drawn and Watts was fatally wounded. Statum fled, exading [sic] the clutches of the law.

He went to Texas and started life anew. In the course of time he met a young girl with whom he fell in love. He confessed to the indictment which had been returned against him... The girl would not agree to marry Statum unless he returned to Alabama to stand trial...
