Hello. I descend from Lavina (Louvina) Starr Banks through her son Solomon. My grandfather was William Tribble Banks, who died in OK in 1922. My mother was only 3 at the time. His family history has always been a mystery. I have no information on Louvina's parentage. Wish I did. I hope the information I have found about her descendants in Ancestry is correct:
m. JOHN J BANKS 1800 – 1876

Sam Banks 1824 –
Mahulda C BANKS 1826 – 1900
SOLOMON B BANKS 1831 – 1913
James Anderson Banks 1831 – 1920
Nancy J BANKS 1832 – 1904
Martha Emeline BANKS 1836 – 1905
Mary Tabitha Banks 1836 – 1892
Miles BANKS 1845 – 1844
Willis R BANKS 1845 –

Hello, I regret to say no, I have not - but not losing hope as I've not been able to spend much time researching either. I did come across a different spelling of her first name - Louvina that I believe to be more accurate(& William Henderson Greenlee (her grandson, Mary Tabitha son, my GG)also named one of his daughters Louvina, possibly after her). We appear to be stuck on finding her parentage, probably in NC. Which child was your GG grandparent? Where were they located? Where are you from? Mine was William Henderson Greenlee, from Illinois to Texas to Oklahoma & I now live in Texas. Great to hear from you, Keep in touch - we never know where these leads will go!

Hi. I'm looking for information regarding the parents of Colonel George "Owen" Starr who fought in the Battle of Ridgeway in Canada in 1866. His military records show he was born in Kentucky, enlisted in 1861 and died in 1897. Date of birth is unknown but estimated around 1837. He is buried at Marion. He had a daughter named Katie. Any details of his marriage would also be appreciated.

Thanks
Jenny

Hello!
Hope all is well.
I have a 2nd great grandmother named Theresia Starr 1860-1938 (Star, Starr, Stahr, etc etc) in my family whose father is listed as John Starr (mother as "unkown")from Germany on her death certificate. Family stories say she was adopted through a local church here in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio; though the same document says she was born in Green Township (a suburb of Cincinnati). Other stories say she has Cherokee Indian in her.
Of course this means that ::someone:: knew her father's name and was able to tell the Hamilton County Department of Health so that it appears on her document.
We have plenty of census forms placing her in the area which generally agree on her age. She married Andrew Lipps, Jr. in 1884 and had a number of children, a few of which are alive today. I have pictures of her and Andrew together. I'd be more than happy to exchange info with you to see if our Starrs are the same people.

Let me know.
Andrew Gable

Starr, Starrs, Buell, Shears, Sly, Star

Seeking information on Almina /Elmina Buell who married Unknown Starr and had two sons, Warren L. and Paul H. One son was born in Indiana and the other in Michigan. In 1910, Almina and the boys were living in North Dakota and some are listed as Starr's. At other times, she is listed as Star. Mr. Starr died or divorced her, and Almina moved to Grand Rapids MIchigan where her sons were put into a county-run facility for children while she worked as a maid in the UBA hospital. In 1914, she married Sheldon Leroy (Robert) Shears and attempted to get her sons back. In 1916, she divorced Shears and quickly remarried ... this time to Verl Seneca Sly of Michigan. They lived in Escanaba ?? and her son Warren was listed as Warren Sly in the 1920 census, but I do not see Paul listed. The Slys divorced, too. Almina's father was George Buell, and her mother is listed as Matilda and also as Rose. Almina might have been born in Big Rapids MIchigan in 1888-1890.

What happened to the Starr boys? Who was their father? Did Almina marry again? What happened to her? Sheldon Shears was my grandfather and never said a word about this first marriage or his wife's children. Oddly enough, he married a women whose grandmother was a Starr from St. Clements Ontario, but I don't find any unaccounted for Paul or Warren in those families.

Ellen Starr born c. 1841 in Baltimore

Hi all!

I am looking for information on an Ellen “Ella” Starr born in the 1840's in Baltimore, Maryland, who was the mistress of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth. My good friend is interested in information on her and I'll supply all of what I know about her:

Her mother was Mrs. Ellen Flynn (“Elinn Flin”) Starr who married John Starr in Baltimore on July 5, 1831. John Starr passed away in May of 1839, leaving Mrs. Starr with two children, John W. and Mary Jane.

However sometime in the early 1840's Mrs. Starr gave birth to another child, a girl, whose father is unknown, and this is the Ellen Starr I seek.

Young Ellen Starr appears in the 1850 census. She is listed as being about nine years old and living in Baltimore in the same house as her half-sister. Although the dates are not know, she is said to have lived in Petersburg and Richmond before apparently moving back to Baltimore by 1864.

Both Mrs. Starr and (later) Ellen's half-sister, Mary Jane (also known as “Mary C. Starr,” “Ann E. Starr” and “Mollie Turner”), appear to have supported themselves through prostitution or running bawdy houses. In the late 1850's Mrs. Starr began to ran a bawdy house in Washington D.C. By 1862 her daughter Mary Jane appeared to be running it.

By 1864 Ellen Starr the younger had met and become involved with actor John Wilkes Booth for several years. Wilkes Booth had her moved to Washington DC from Baltimore on December 12, 1864 and installed her at her half-sister's bawdy house.

On April 15, 1865, the morning after John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, Ellen Starr tried unsuccessfully to commit suicide using chloroform. She was arrested for her connection to Wilkes Booth and gave a statement to police later the same day on which she signs her name as “Nellie Starr,” “Ella Starr,” “Fannie Harrison.” Ellen was subpoenaed and called to the Arsenal on three separate occasions during the trial of the conspirators but she was never put on the witness stand.

After the tragic events of 1865, Ellen Starr disappears from history. The last confirmed reference to her comes from 1888 when her mother deeded a lot in a Baltimore cemetery to her daughter, indicating that Ellen “Ella” Starr was still alive at that time.

Then she disappears.

Her sister Mary Jane (called Ann on the marriage certificate) married and later divorced a Henry Treakle, and she had a daughter by Henry named Mary Virginia Treakle who married a Giles Bartlett in Huron, Ohio, in 1873, and had two children.

Does anyone have ANY information on what happened to this woman?

(Some claim that Ella had a baby girl in 1865 named Mary Louise Turner by a man named John Byron Wilkes; this John Byron Wilkes named “Ella Turner” and “the heir of my natural body, Mary Louise Turner” as beneficiaries in his will. However there is no proof that Ella ever even met John Byron Wilkes nor is there a birth record for a “Mary Louise Turner.” Another claim is that an “Ella Starr Turner” who “married John Byron Wilkes” died June 26, 1905 in Tennessee. There are no public records that can prove any of these claims. It is generally assumed that Mr. Byron Wilkes was a “John Wilkes Booth imposter” as the real John Wilkes was killed on April 26, 1865, 12 days after the assassination. In 1884 a young actress named “Miss Ella Starr” performed in New York; she has also been mistaken for our Ellen Starr who would have been older by the 1880's.)

Thank you!

Hezekiah Starr-Julia Ann DeShields Update

Want to share more new information with descendants of Hezekiah Starr and Julia Ann DeShields. As previously reported (http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.starr/1696/mb.ashx), we have learned that Julia Ann was the daughter of Catholic Acadian refugee Francis DeShields and his wife, Magdalen, rather than Captain Benjamin Dashiell as the family long believed. Julia Ann had three confirmed siblings: Margaret Ann, Peter, and Ann. Family records appear in the register of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Baltimore.

Now we have learned Peter's fate and found additional proof of the siblings' parentage.

Peter DeShields enlisted in the 14th Regiment of U.S. Infantry on October 25, 1812, to fight in the War of 1812. He became a prisoner of war following the Battle of Beaver Dams on June 26, 1813, and died in the POW hospital in October 1813.(U.S. Army Register of Enlistment, p. 225, NARA; General Entry Book of American Prisoners of War at Quebec, p. 32, Public Archives of Canada) His service entitled his heirs to bounty land.

In Bounty Land Warrant Application File #2367 Magdalen DeShields stated that she was the mother and administatrix of Peter, who was single. Land Entry File #2367 explains that Magdalen DeShields died before the patent was issued and that Joseph A. Male was her executor. He attested that Julia Ann Starr and Margaret Ann Male were Peter's remaining heirs. Margaret requested the land be located in Illinois Territory. (NARA) This documentation adds to the proof that the Dashiell Family Records interpreted the probate of Magdalen and Peter DeShields--and ultimately the identity of Julia Ann DeShields--incorrectly.

According to Knox Co., IL, deed records, the family claimed the land. However, it went undeveloped and eventually fell into speculator's hands in 1847.

Questions always welcome!

Yours,
Sue Ann Hayley and LeAnna Starr Schooley

I have researched this family as well. The records for Scott Co., AR, were burned in 1882 which doesn't help. I've searched every record I could find and have info on the Wood children: Mary Wood (dau. of Abraham Wood and Elizabeth Price) m. John Henry Bell and were parents of Elizabeth Bell Starr. Lydia Wood (dau. of Abraham Wood and Elizabeth Price) appears to be the mother of John Wesley Starr. I cannot find anything as to who the father was. I've searched for all Starr people in the area prior and after John Wesley's birth. I can find no leads. I don't know what source people are using in the claim that John Wesley's father was Robert. Lydia m. a Mr. Titsworth (he had children by a previous marriage) and they had a dau. named Julia. I realize this is no help but just wanted to let you know another person has researched for years. Would love to be kept in mind if this is ever solved. My great grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Wood, is a younger brother to Mary Wood Bell and Lydia Wood ?Starr? Titsworth.

Hattie was my great grand-mother. Married to James Matthew or John Matthew Peery. Their son, Jack Hayden Peery was my grand father. Hayden as he was known would have been born between 1896 and 1898.

I can't find Hattie's parents. There is a Hattie Starr born at the right time in South Carolina but I can't "move" her to WV or find a marriage to John Matthew Peery

Hello Margaret and Tony,

Oh my Gosh! That's you! Maureen and I correspond on a regular basis - several emails in the last couple of weeks. We also exchange cards - It is almost as though we are neighbors. BTW, I am looking at a framed picture above my desk of Maureen, Peter, and Carol Drinkwater, taken at the 2011 France show, sent me by Maureen.

She responded to a review I wrote re Escape to Provence on a French website when the book was first released. (The same abbreviated review is on the UK and US Amazon websites). My review was in response to a negative review by a well known journalist. She (and Philip) was so taken by my review that she started a correspondence that has very few long breaks.

I read my first Fortescue book decades ago and then became interested in M.F.K. Fisher and then, fascinated with Provence. We seriously considered moving there but have pretty much decided to return to New York or Kansas City.

Something interesting: I recently found (and this is why I responded to your post originally) an article entitled "A Child's Santuary" in a June 26, 1945 edition of The Argus, A Melbourne, Australia newspaper published online by Trove Digitised Newspapers. The article is about Elisabeth's efforts to help the French children of that era. You may have come across this article. The article is by Freda Barrymore. I googled her, saw her picture and the info that she was born in 1890 and died in 1971. I sent this to Maureen.

My Shannon and I have a standing invitation to Sussex if we ever get over that way - we are envious (in a good way) of your visit with Maureen and Philip.

My first name is Gary, that's what I go by, and my middle name is Roger, hence the email address.

Please stay in touch - this is fascinating.

Best wishes from Texas,

Gary
Roger1322@suddenlink.net

Hello Roger (Gary), (!!??)
Many thanks for your message. I've just been reading through your posts to Peter Reilly's lovely website Perfume from Provence. It was my interest in Winifred Fortescue's book that led me there way back in 2004. If you look at Mountain Madness on his site you'll see our photos when Tony & I went searching for the bergerie. That's me sitting in that lovely wildflower meadow - it's my screensaver!!

We had lunch with Maureen & Philip Emerson in Opio not long after the publication of her book, which I suspect is from where you've got your information about Elisabeth Starr. Maureen did a wonderful job in researching her life and it really is a very interesting read, isn't it?

But if you are not Roger (Gary), and you know other things about Elisabeth I would be more than interested to hear from you. In any case I look forward to hearing from you.

Au revoir! Margaret Smith, and Tony

Would you be able to check the same type of record for information on James and Elizabeth Starr. They were Phoebes parents and they were in Dorchester around the same time. I know for sure James was born in Canada, would love any info on his wife, no one seems toknow much about her. We belive her maiden name was Palmer and that they were married about 1825/26 but cant find a marriage record. James was a Quaker, living in the Home district around the time of his marriage, but not sure that is were they were married.
Thanks so much for your help.
Linda

Looking for information on Charles Starr and his family. He was born in 1845 in Kentucky, and died in 1889 in Portland, but it's believed that he lived in Astoria with other Starrs in between. Indeed, his son John Starr was born in Astoria in 1865.

From John's death record, I have Charles Starr and Catherine Hess listed as his parents, but I am having an extremely hard time finding any information on their union, if indeed there even was one. John married Maude Veatch, but eventually divorced and moved to California.

What's strange is that it seems John didn't live with either Charles or Catherine in 1880, but rather with the Baskett family in Derry, Oregon. It's all a big mystery!

If anyone has any information on the Starr family in Astoria, I would greatly appreciate the help!

James C Starr was my Great Great Grandfather. Rosa was my Great Grandmother and Della Gay Starr (Shrum) was my grandmother from Pryor, OK. Do you know who his parents are?? I can't get any farther than James. My grandmother said we are related to Belle Starr, but I can't figure that out. I have a huge original pic of Rosa. I had my brother do the DNA test.
