Obituary from Paulding Co, OH of 23 May 1895.
David W. Stair was born in 1844 in Wayne County, Ohio. Died April 27, 1895 at his home in North Yakima, Washington.
2 Bio's of Ella S. Stair (1857-1942), wife of David W. Stair (1844-1895)

[Ella Sophronia Parker (Feb 1857/ Clay Twp, Hardin Co, IA - 11 Jul 1942/ Portland Co, OR), daughter of Francis Taylor Parker and Armeda Jane Lesh, married David Warren McDonald Stair in Spring, 1877 in Pawnee Co, NE.]

Biography from Andrew J. Splawn, "Ka-Mi-Akin: The Last Hero of the Yakimas," (Portland, OR: Kilman Stationary and Publishing Co, 1917), pp 276-277.
In 1887 there came to Yakima City D. W. Stair and wife. Mrs. Stair was a remarkably fine looking woman, well educated and brilliant. When I first saw her, I wondered what strange fate had brought her to this wild land. She proved of utmost value to the county in educational work, for which she was so well equipped. She was school superintendent for a number of terms and teacher in the public schools many years. Through her kindly interest in her pupils, she won their lasting gratitude and even now, after long years, they cherish her memory. In all matters for the betterment of community interests she was found in the front ranks. I know of no woman in Yakima Valley that has done more for its citizens or will be remembered longer than Ella S. Stair. She later married George von Hagel and now lives in San Francisco.

Biographical Note from, Tri-City Herald, [Benton Co, WA] 1 October 1961
Early Teacher was Woman
She Went Along Halloween
By Burton Lum
Stately blue-eyed blond Ella Parker Stair was born in the state of Nebraska during the 1850’s. She married D.W. Stair when she was twenty. They moved to Yakima City, Washington Territory in 1877. She was the mother of three sons—: Clarence, Dean and Richard. D.W. Stair was a lawyer and quite prominent in the pioneer legal profession. He was Probate Judge of Yakima. He enjoyed farming. They had a farm near Yakima on Ahtanum Creek. He passed away in 1896. Mrs. Stair had a sister, Rose, in North Yakima who was the wife of A.E. Larson, a prominent lumber dealer and capitalist. She also was a cousin of Fred Parker, a well known Yakima attorney who in his youth, was a pony express rider. From 1883 to 1885 Mrs. Stair was county school superintendent of Yakima County. It was during her term of office that Kennewick was granted a school district in 1884. Her maternal instinct was her ruling passion. Those that she taught were not merely her pupils, they were her children. She not only instructed them in their school lessons, but moulded their character to meet the problems of their future lives. I always felt that after attending her classes one had a second mother. Mrs. Stair was a relative of the Dole family of Hawaii. They were famous for the production of pineapples. While she was principal of the North Yakima High School, every summer she boarded a Dole freighter at Portland and took a leisurely trip to the Hawaiian Island, returning to North Yakima in time for the opening of high school in the fall. Her niece, Miss Eva C. May, who was a graduate from Colorado College, taught German and other subjects in the high school. She had a very sunny disposition and was blessed with a beautiful face and figure. She married Miles B. Cannon, a large lumber distributor who passed away several years ago. Mrs. Eva C. May-Cannon is still living in Portland. High school social activities during the pioneer days were quite different from those of the present. In those days there were literary societies, ice cream socials, hay rides and picnics. The means of travel were horse drawn wagons in the summer and sleighs in winter’s snow. Mrs. Stair chaperoned them all. Each year on Halloween Eve, the students went on a prowl. Mrs. Stair always accompanied them to see that youthful enthusiasm did not lead to destruction of property. There was no ‘trick-or-treat’ threat in these pioneer celebrations. This came on the agenda when outside plumbing moved inside and fence gates were made so that they could not be lifted from their hinges. Mrs. Stair radiated helpfulness of all who came in contact with her. She was courageous. In defiance of the Washington State laws, each morning she opened her school by reading a chapter from the scriptures. Her uplifting influence was felt and cherished by all who knew her. She retired from teaching school after spending nearly a half century in her chosen profession. The later days of her life were happily spent visiting the families of her children and those of her former students. In the twilight of her life she married Professor Von Ogle [Hagel], a prominent educator. In their happy companionship they visited all points of interest in the United States, Canada, Alaska, Mexico and South America, also Europe Asia and a portion of Africa and of course the Hawaiian Islands. They really sailed the seven seas.

My maiden name is Stair and my dad(George Stair) has and like more information on this family. I think this is our ancestors. I know he has said the last name used to be spelled Stoehr in Germany and some of our ancestors came from Germany right by the French border. His grandparents or great grandparents, came over from Germany and only spoke German and settled by Luling, Texas or Prairie Lea. They named the town by there or where they lived after them (Stairtown, Texas). If you want to contact him email me at leahfromsa@yahoo.com and I will give you contact info.

Has anyone received test results?

My earliest confirmed Stair ancestor is Philip Stair b 10 Feb 1783, d 29 July 1849. He married Lydia and had a son Philip Albert. The family lived in York, PA. It was believed the family was from Scotland. Very possible that is incorrect and may be of German origin, but the birth dates don't agree.

I would try to get copies of your grandfather's vital records (birth, marriage, death) and use what you find there. They should have his birthplace and the names of his parents. Perhaps your grandmother still has these? I would also try to contact his family - if he had brothers and sisters - as they may have more information. DNA testing will show a connection but it is nice to fill in the gaps. Best wishes, Tom

Hello everyone, my surname - STARE - is a variation on the one already included. I am hoping in some way, somewhere my ancestors may have changed the spelling and I can find more ancestors beyond my grandfather. I know they were in PA, but besides a First and Last name I have been lost in my search. My grandmother is older now and her memory is spotty at best and she remarried, so not much information is available.

Hi "Doggytails",
I hope your participation will help you find matches among other project participants. If there is a match, you and that person probably share a common ancestor. That depends on the closeness of the match and the amount of "markers" tested. I would always choose the most detailed test you can afford. (If you can't do the most comprehensive one, you can upgrade it later without having a new sample sent.) I am assuming you are a male Starr/Stoehr/Stair; if not - and you are one of those surnames, you can have a brother or other male relative tested on your behalf.

Do you know the names and birth dates of your grandparents? If they were born by 1930, you could find them in the US census records - start with Pennsylvania. Most likely they would be living with their parents - your great-grandparents. You may also be able to get their death certificates if you know when and where they died. Have you also tried to contact other relatives?

Best wishes, Tom

You must look on the Stoehr/Stair Family site (lots of messages about it on this board). They have quite a bit on Pauline's family line. William H. Peters b. 7 Jul 1836 in VA. You may also look on usgenweb.org to see what you can find out about the Peters' Family, as I recall reading about a homestead there, some time back.
You are right, it is a difficult name to search. My David STAIR was actually spelled STARR on the 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 US census (all in Tennessee). It was not until 1870, that David and his brothers had the name spelled STAIR. David was the son of Joseph and Susannah STARR. Jospeh was also born in Tennessee. There seems to be an open debate as to whether this line is German STOEHR (or some similar spelling) or other origins I have also heard.

hello.

Thanks for e-mailing. It's been three years since I have worked my genealogy, moved back to my home state. I will look for the letter you asked for. But, forgive me, I don't know which one you are asking for. Please give details and I'll send it.

Richard

I know it's been awhile since you posted this, but this is my family listed in your post. Do you still have the letter? I'd love a copy of it if possible. I've been scouring through all the message boards, city, state, surname, etc. to find any info that i'm missing. Thanks for posting this information.

Hello! I was excited when I found this post. I think this is a fantastic idea. I'm definitely going to check it out. I have had not much success with my line of Stair's either. I've only got the barest indication that my Stair's come from Pennsylvania somewhere far back, but mostly VA and IN. I'm working on getting authentication and verifying spelling, etc. to make sure I'm looking up the right lines and things. It's been a chore, as I'm sure you know. Anyhow, great to meet you guys!

Jacob Stair (York, PA)

Unfortunately, all I have is an entry in the
Stair family bible that John was born
6 Dec 1824 in PA. His great-grandaughter
said there was a family legend that he was
born somewhere near Philadelphia (this is
unsubstantiated). Supposedly they lived for
a few years in "the middle of Ohio" before
moving and settling in Holland, Lucas County,
Ohio in the 1830's or early 1840's. I have
searched through several lists of PA Dutch
churches near Philly and a ring of counties
but so far have come up blank. I'm not sure
if there is a register of births where John
(likely to be Johann) was born on that date,
or if Jacob's children would be listed.
I can only be sure of John, so perhaps his
father's name was not Jacob---the name Jacob
is by word of mouth and some family members
are not sure if they ever heard of John's
father's name. It's a challenge!
