OK, here we go... Ou "allons-y" s'il y a des francophones dans la communaute... My great-grandfather Israel (son of Delphis or Dolphis St-Aubin) was born 7 May 1866 in Ottawa (bapt 20 May) and he had an older brother Delphis born 1855 in Sorel Quebec. I have solid records for both brothers and for other siblings showing their parents as Delphis St-Aubin and Marie-Louise Labelle. I have Dolphis junior's death record showing Israel in attendance. Both Dolphis jr's and Israel's death records say that Dolphis pere came from St-Jerome Quebec.
G-g-g-f Dolphis could have been born anytime between 1810 and 1835 and still had a first child in 1855. 1881 Census records show Marie-Louise Labelle living in Ottawa (Byward) as a widow with children including Israel (age 14), so Dolphis may well have had his children relatively later in life.
Just to complicate matters... there are records for three male St-Aubin's of the same generation as gggf Delphis living in the area between Ottawa and Montreal... There are records for a Denys St-Aubin (who could be Pierre-Denis/Delphis) married to a Mary Bell (who could be Marie Louise Labelle). There are records for a Theophile St-Aubin who married a Louise Labelle in 1853 in Ottawa and had several children. And there is a Census record of a Dolphis St-Aubin married to Caroline with several children of their own (a bigamist?? -- way too many children involved...)
So Theophile (b. 1829) was the son of Vincent (b. 1798) whose father was Jacques (b. 1755). If Theophile is in fact Delphis, then I have a direct line back up to Adrien who was born in France and married in Montreal in 1680. But I have nothing to link Delphis and Theophile as the same person.
Alternatively, Delphis might be Pierre Denis St-Aubin (b. 1811), son of Pierre Denis (b. 1785) in which case I also have a line, but no direct link between P-D and Delphis. My records show that Pierre Denis grand-pere (b. 1785) was married in 1807 to Francoise Poirier. It is possible that P-D G-P could have had a son sometime between 1810 and 1830 (between 25 and 45 years of age).
Although there is an 11-year gap between Dolphis junior and Israel, they have the same mother's name. If Theophile is in fact Delphis (a nickname or second name?) it is possible that he and Louise Labelle were married in Ottawa in 1853, moved to Sorel where they had Dolphis junior in 1855 and then moved back to Ottawa. Another clue is that Theophile had an older brother from a different mother and that older brother was married at St-Jerome Quebec, so there is a family link to that town, as per the death certificates for both Dolphis jr and Israel.
Then there is the possible bigamist with two families in Ottawa at the same time -- boggles the mind. Other than the Census record, however, I can find no other trace of him and his wife and family.
Any suggestions, clues, hints ideas?
