St. Amant in Louisiana in 1700s
Looking for information on St. Amant and his wife Domingo around the late 1700s. They were in Louisiana and had 2 runaway slaves named Tham and Margareta (as listed in Gwendolyn Midlo-Hall's book). I need to know where the St. Amants purchased their slaves from. Margareta is my ancestor. Thank you for the help.

Re: St. Amant in German Coast, Louisiana
Try looking in St. Charles or St. John Parish. That is where most St. Amant's (or St. Amand's or Daspit de St. Amand's) originally settled along what was then known as the German Coast.

Re: St. Amant in Louisiana in 1700s
Dear Heather: I noticed your posting on the St.Amant board. The original St.Amant ancestors in Louisiana were 3 brothers; one being Jean Baptiste Francois Daspit de St.Amant. The original name was Daspit (France) but Ann was the last of her line and so her husband included her name with his..as was customary with royal families, I believe. I have considerable information on the family, although I'm still searching for connections. The 3 brothers sailed from Toulouse, France in 1718. I have been curious to find out why they came here. I have a book of La. history (LSU press) from the period and it was not a paradise by any means. The Duke of Toulouse was the 2nd son of Louis XIV by Madame Maintenon; he was an admiral in the French Navy and a very reputable man according to my sources. One of the 3 brothers had the salt concession; the duc transported the salt back to France...Margarite St.Amant was wife of the commandant of the BAttle of NO..a friend of Andrew Jackson. At least 4 St.Amant men were soldiers in that battle. Please email me if you see this to share info. Thanks. Jane S

Re: St. Amant in Louisiana in 1700s
The only ancestor of the Daspit de St. Amand family that I have record of is one Jean Francois Daspit de St. Amand who was born ca 1691, son of Jacques Daspit de St Amand and Dominique Bordeliere of Toulouse. Jean Francois came to Louisiana and married in New Orleans April 13, 1722 to Marie Francoise Du Buisson. Of this marriage there were three sons recorded: Jacques b. 1722 died 1723, Jean Pierre b. 1723 and Dominique b.1728. Jean Francois Daspit de St. Amand died in the Natchez village ca. 1728 along with a number of soldiers sent to scout the Natchez. Marie Francoise Du Buisson remarried to Antoine Meuillion ca 1730 and had one son by him : Louis Auguste Meullion b. 1732 d. 1809. From the two Daspit sons John Pierre and Dominique come all of the families carrying the name Daspit, or St. Amant now in Louisiana. I do not know of any brothers of Jean Francois Daspit de St. Amand who came over with him.

Re: St. Amant in Louisiana in 1700s
Ray, was wondering if you had any info on Delphine St Amant, born around 1795, married Francois Mayronne around 1813, parents were Francois St Amand and Therese Risner? Thanks Ken

Re: St. Amant in Louisiana in 1700s
I am sorry it has taken so long to post this reply. Francois St. Amant was the son of Dominique Daspit de St. Amant, the younger son of Jean Francois Daspit de St Amant and Marie Francoise Du Buisson. The family of Dominique often dropped the Daspit name and used St. Amant. This was to distinguish them from the descendants of Dominique's elder brother Jean Pierre Daspit de St. Amand. According to all sources the family has one progenitor: Jean Francois Daspit de St. Amand who died at Natchez in 1728.
