Srackengast/Burgess/Griffin families in MD, VA, OH and MI
I'm looking for information on J (Joel or Joseph?) Burgess and Rebecca Srackengast who married in Botetourt VA in 1822/24. I believe their daughter, Martha Burgess married Wm Griffin, my GGGGrandfather in OH in 1848 and then their family moved in 1865 to MI. I'd like to find Rebecca and Joel's birth dates and records and their other children besides Martha, if there are any and where they are buried. I know Rebecca's parents are Daniel and Mary Snider Srackengast and that they were from Maryland, but married in Frederick VA and raised a family in Botetourt VA. Their children were: Elizabeth, Joseph, Sophia, Rebecca, George, and Christina. And maybe there were other children... a daughter Mary born 1810? Daughters Sophia, and Christina married and may have stayed in VA. I don't know where Rebecca and J Burgess lived after their marriage in 1824. Daniel and Mary and some of their children, Elizabeth, Joseph and George moved to Preble County OH in the mid 1800s. Son George S. and family moved on to MI in 1855? and Joseph and his family settled in IN. Martha and Wm Griffin moved from Butler Co OH to Berrien Co MI in 1865. Any more information on this family is welcomed.

I do have Joel Burgess and Rebecca Srackangast (a couple) in my family tree. The source for this information is a family member now deceased. I know more about Rebecca's family but not about Joel's. I will look at what else I have that might help you.

Re: Srackengast/Burgess/Griffin families in MD, VA, OH and MI
From a lady named Virginia Miller Marsh, from VA, I learned that the date of Jan 16, 1822 was the date of marriage application and that the actual date the marriage took place was Dec 19, 1824. Don't know what to make of that, unless it's like my Dad said about the "pioneer" days, the "preacher" only came around to certain towns and areas ever so once in a while and then everybody got married when he was in town, even though they might have gotten the license some time before. Anyways, I've got those two dates for the marriage. It's where they went after that... where they lived, how many kids they had together, besides Martha that I know about who was born Jun 9, 1830....at least 6 yrs after the marriage, so she must not have been the first child... maybe one of the youngest. Anyways, I learned about her parents from her death record. She married my GGGrandfather Wm Griffin in Preble Co OH on Jan 4, 1848 and had a passle of kids with him in Butler Co OH and then moved to Berrien Co MI where both of them are buried.

Re: Srackengast/Burgess/Griffin families in MD, VA, OH and MI
I know more about Rebecca's family than I do about Joel or Joseph Burgess, too. I still have some "holes" to fill in about them, so I'll tell you what I know... and what I don't and maybe we can help each other out. Well.... as far back as I can go is this: Daniel Srackangast (born June 5, 1765) was from Maryland (don't know if he was born there, but he was "from" there. He married Mary Snider (born 1768, don't know day or month) also from Maryland on Jan 30, 1795 in Frederick VA, which is close to DC. They raised a family in Botetourt VA, close to the mountains which became part of WV in 1854. Sometime before the 1850 Census, Daniel and Mary moved with at least some of the children to Preble Co OH. Daniel Srackangast died in Preble Co OH sometime before the 1850 census (date not known) and is buried in Backbone Cemetery in Preble CO OH. There was a Srackangast stone in the cemetery at one time. The land is now private property. Mary died sometime after the 1870 Census at which time she was 92. It's believed she was buried with her husband. I've found marriage records for some of their children, but maybe there are some I haven't found. Here's what I have on Daniel and Mary Snider Srackengast's children: ELIZABETH born 1795 in VA married John Loop on Mar 2, 1813 in Botetourt VA. They later moved to OH. I only know of one child... Joseph Loop, who is buried next to his parents, there may be several others. Elizabeth, Joseph and John are buried in Preble Co OH. Elizabeth died Feb 5, 1889. JOSEPH born Dec 18, 1798 in VA married Susannah Thompson (don't have a date, but probably around 1824). She bore him 3 children: John W born 1825, Sarah Margaret born 1829, and Joseph born 1832. Susannah died in 1835. Then Joseph married Elizabeth Foland (don't know that date either... suspect it's around 1840) She bore him 5 children: Absolom Painter born 1842, Rebecca born 1844, David born 1846, Francis Asberry born 1848 and Christina born 1853. Joseph also married a Nancy Benefiel, but I have no date on that marriage. Joseph died Oct 14, 1864 and is buried in Perkinsville IN. I don't know when Joseph moved his family to IN, but it must have been before the 1850 Census because he is not in OH at that time. SOPHIA (don't have a birthdate... suspect it's around 1800) married John Thomas on Feb 28, 1823. I haven't been able to track down any children for Sophia and John Thomas, nor where they lived nor anything about a date or place of death. REBECCA (don't know birthdate, suspect around 1803?) married Joel Burgess in either Jan 16, 1822 or Dec 19, 1824 in Botetourt VA (Do you suppose that maybe they had to wait till one of them was "of age" to get married? That thought just occurred to me.) Anyways, the only child I know about is Martha Burgess, born Jun 9, 1830 in VA, married Wm Griffin on Jan 4, 1848 in Preble Co OH, and raised a family with him in Butler Co OH, including my GGrandfather George B Griffin. Martha and Wm Griffin moved from Butler Co OH to Berrien Co MI in 1865 on land granted to him by the government for the service of his grandfather in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Martha Burgess Griffin and Wm Griffin are buried in Berrien Co MI, but I've no idea where Rebecca and Joel Burgess are buried. GEORGE born 1807 in VA married Eliza Ann Kelly Mar 3, 1833 in Preble Co OH. Eliza bore him one son, Francis born 1834. Eliza died in 1834 (from childbirth??) George next married Susannah Loop who bore him 7 children: Wesley born 1837, John Henry born 1839, Mary born 1841, George Washington born 1842, Sarah born 1845, Simon born 1846 and Susan Jane born 1848. Don't know what happened to Susannah (death or divorce) but George next married Asenath Ann Gard Aug 15, 1854 in Preble, then they moved the family to Berrien Co MI. Asenath bore George 5 more children...all in MI: Olive born 1858, Ezra born 1860, Warren born 1863, James born 1865, and Daniel born 1869 who died in 1870. George died Aug 2, 1886 and is buried in Berrien MI, but I haven't found the cemetery yet. CHRISTINA born 1809? in VA married Wm. B Stover on Sep 1, 1829 in Botetourt VA. They had (according to the 1850 census) the following children: Mary M born 1832, James H born 1833, Wm J Stover born 1835, Nancy E born 1837, Sarah I born 1838, Eliza F born 1840, Charles E born 1843, Ann J born 1845, Harriet V born 1846, and Daniel born 1848. The census also noted that Wm Stover was a carpenter and that he owned 6 slaves: a male 25, a female 23, a male 22, a female 20, a male 5 and a male 4. Then there is a puzzlement.... another male Srockengast who lived in Preble Co OH right next door to George (in the 1850 census, George is household #629 and this Srockengast is household number #628), but nobody can make out the first name. It's too faint and has some blotches over it. To me, it looks like a big fancy "S" then a "k" or "h" then an "o" or "a" then an "l". It isn't Joseph, because the birthdate given is 1808 and Joseph is 1798 and he's probably in IN already by 1850. Also, the children are different. This "questionable" Srockengast's wife is an Elizabeth, born 1811 in Maryland. No length of marriage is given in the 1850 census, but the children are these: Mary born 1837, David born 1839, Ann born 1841, Lurton (probably Linton) born 1843 and Lewis born 1848. By the ages of both parents, 42 and 39, they're old enough to have had children who may have already left home (married) by the time of the 1850 census so there may be other children I haven't found. Do you know anything about this Srackengast? What the name might be? It's one big fancy capitol letter, possible another tall letter next to it, then space for another letter that isn't there, and the top part of maybe an "o" or "a" and ending in an "l". I've thought of many possibilities... Dan'l, Sam'l, Noel, Joel, Carl, Abel??? Tis a puzzlement! I've tried running down the children and haven't been able to find this family anywhere except for the 1850 Census in Preble OH. Do you know where they might have gone and what happened to them?? Also, I just found another Srackengast married in Preble OH...a Mary Srackengast born 1810 married a George Hanger on Sep 13, 1830. No parents names are given for her, so don't know for sure if she's Mary and Daniel's child, but the other Mary Srackengasts are too young to be her and she's just a year younger than Christina Srockengast and I don't know of any other Srackengasts than those we are related to living in Preble OH at that time. I haven't had time yet to run down this Srackengast/Hanger connection to see where it goes. Well, that's all I have for the time being. Still working on them and the rest of my family. I can send you a "pic" of that 1850 Census page with the mystery named Srackengast, if you want to take a stab at figuring it out for yourself if I can have you email addy... or I can go back and look up the URL for it, if I can find it. Most of the info that I was able to dig up so far is through the Mormon Church's search engine... familysearch.org and then there are some cemetery sites that list family names and give dates, etc and then ancestry.com itself. Well, hope we can help each other out with the rest of the story.

Re: Srackengast/Burgess/Griffin families in MD, VA, OH and MI
Very interesting stuff we've got here! I'd like to take a stab at deciphering that census. I have an Ancestry subscription so I can look it up if you tell me what ward they're in.
I'm going to contact my in-laws (this is my husband's line) and see what they might know or have in their possession. My MIL is a descendant of Daniel & Mary's son George. I'll let you know what I come up with.

Re: Srackengast/Burgess/Griffin families in MD, VA, OH and MI
Terri, At the top of the 1850 Census report page, it says Gasper Township, Preble County Ohio. There's a 123 or maybe 125 penned in above the name of the twp, Gasper....can only see the bottom half of the last number. Don't know if that refers to a page number or what. But the mystery Srackengast family begins on line 28. George is right above his family, starting on line 18. I went back to the place where I thought I had found the info and saved the image of the Census page. I have it on my hard drive as a jpg file. But now I can't open the page at the website... it says "unavailable" online.... Well, I got it online someplace and I thought it was there....at the familysearch.org site, but now there's just the summary of the info from the page, not the actual page. It also says that this Srackengast and George were wagon makers by trade. And wife of "mystery" Srackengast Elizabeth was from Maryland and all their kids were born in OH. It also states that Mary, David, Ann and Lurton attended school. Lewis was only 2 yrs old at the time... last on this list. George was the one who moved his family to MI and I was most able to find "stuff" on him. I was born in MI and I've got loads of family living there still. I'm taking the results of my findings back there this summer and hope to show my relatives there what I've learned in the past few months. Don't know who amongst them has any family records of any kind... bibles or such. All the "old folks" but one are dead and gone and the "one" that remains has Altzheimers. My next oldest cousin Barbara may have some stuff. Her mom is the one with Altzheimers. I know they cleared out and sold her home already and Barbara lives next door, so she probably wound up with all the "stuff." Oh, I also found Srackengasts in Ross County OH which is south central OH.... Preble is in the SW part... just a bit above Cincinnatti and west of Dayton. Do you know whether these Ross County Srackengasts are related to the Preble County Scrackengasts? On census reports, they state that they (older ones at least) were born in PA. There are also PA Srackengasts in WV that say they are born in PA, but not in that part of WV that used to be Botetourt County... other parts. And there are a smattering of Srackengasts in NY and NJ, too....some right in downtown Manhattan. Any relation, do you think?? BTW, do you happen to know what Srackengast means??? Is it Dutch or German? I do know a bit of German and Gast means "guest". There is a word "schrecken" which means to scare or frighten. Do you suppose that Srackengast means "scary guest" or maybe like a "ghost" or poltergeist?? The only word I know for "ghost" is "Geist"... as in Heilige Geist.... Holy Ghost. Oh, just found out that "schrecken" also means "to terrorize"... Good grief!! Tess

Re: Srackengast/Burgess/Griffin families in MD, VA, OH and MI
Just located the Joseph Srackengast family in the 1850 Census. He was living in White River IN (Hamilton Co) with 2nd wife Elizabeth and all his kids from eldest John W down to an 8 month old named Mary born in 1850. The cemetery files did't list a Mary born in 1850, but give a Christina born in 1853. So maybe this Mary died in infancy and is buried elsewhere? The cemetery files are from Madison CO, where Joseph is buried, but the census is Hamilton Co. I'll have to search now for the 1860 census to see what's there, although that census is a "pain" to figure out. It's still in bits and pieces at the LDS site....individuals that can only be tied together by a family number. And I also found in the 1880 Census John W and his wife Mary K Srackengast in Hamilton Co with a son John W born 1858. This John W is Joseph's son born in 1825 in VA. Got a map of IN to see just where Madison and Hamilton Counties are in relation to each other and in relation to Berrien County MI, which is in the far SW corner of MI. Both Hamilton and Madison Counties are just north of Indianapolis, so about 150 miles from Berrien County.
Also located some Pennsylvania Shreckengasts in Randolph County IN which is to the east of Hamilton and Madison Counties but I don't know if they are related?? As to George Srackengast which you say is your husband's family, I can give you the URL to a map of Pipestone Township in Berrien County MI from a book in the U of M Library entitled "Atlas of Berrien County Michigan", in 1887 that shows the land (two plots) owned by Mrs Geo Srackengast that is near to an 80 acre plot owned by my GGGrandfather William Griffin. It says Mrs Geo Srackengast on it because George died in 1886 and this book is from the year after he died. I also once located some Srackengasts in other parts of MI... like Cass County, which is just to the north of Berrien County and Lenewee Co which is farther east. Got to run these folks down... when I can...to see if they might be related. These folks were another generation, I think... from the 1880s and 90s?? Maybe George's kids that spread out a bit?? Tess

Re: Srackengast/Burgess/Griffin families in MD, VA, OH and MI
I did find out more about Mary Srackengast. She was a daughter of Daniel and Mary. She was born 1810/11 and married George Hanger on Sep 13, 1830 in Preble OH. Since daughter Christina married Wm B Stover in 1829, I think this sort of pinpoints when the Srackengast family moved from VA to OH.... sometime between Sep 1, 1829 and Sep 13, 1830. Anyways.... Mary Ann Srackengast and George Hanger had at least these kids, as found in the 1850 and 1860 Ohio Census records...all born in OH: Catherine A Hanger born 1826 who married Benjamin J Fowler Sep 25, 1851. Susan H Hanger born 1828 who married Seth Gifford Mar 25, 1852. Susan Hanger Gifford died Jan 24, 1876. Rebecca Hanger born 1833 who married James G White Nov 10, 1853. Sarah (Sallie) Hanger born 1840 married Charles B Johnson Nov 10, 1863. George W Hanger born Jul 24, 1843 who married Catherine Judy on Oct 7, 1868. George died Jan 11, 1913 in Preble OH. Harriet Caroline Hanger born 1844 who married a Peter Fouts on Jan 3, 1867 in Preble OH. Harriet died Jan 1, 1916 in Preble OH. I had earlier found the matriarch, Mary Snyder Srackengast still alive and living with family # 125 in the 1860 census and wondered which family that was. Well, I just discovered that it was George and youngest daughter Mary Ann Hanger's family. Mary Ann Srackengast Hanger died on Feb 10, 1895 in Preble OH and George Hanger died sometime after 1860, but definitely before 1880, because Mary is noted as "widowed" in that census.

Re: Srackengast/Burgess/Griffin families in MD, VA, OH and MI
Correction to the George Hanger Mary Ann Srackengast story. Mary Ann Srackengast was George's second wife. First wife was Susannah Catherine Loop.... don't know marriage date yet, but the first two children, Catherine Ann born 1825... and Susan H Hanger born 1828 were Susannah Catherine Loop's children with George Hanger. Susannah died i 1828. Then George married Mary Ann Srackengast on Sep 13, 1830 and they had Rebecca, Sarah (Sallie), George Washington Hangar, and Harriet Caroline Hanger. George and Susannah Loop Hanger are buried in the Old Dutch (Moyer) Cemetery in Camden OH. I think I may have some other relatives buried in that cemetery from my Mom's Mom's side of the family. George died in 1869. Mary Ann Srackengast Hanger died Feb 10, 1895.... haven't found the cemetery yet, but it is in Preble County. She was living with son George Washington Hanger when she died. Well, that's all for now.... I'll keep digging.
