I think (?) I have information on most SQUANCEs worldwide - my mother was one so I have conducted a one-name study. I can go back, in most instances to the early 1600s.
Can you let me know the name(s) of perhaps a grandparent or great-grandparent and approx. birth year/location? I'll send you what information I have then off list. In the meantime, I'm attaching what purports to be the origins of the name.

Hi,
My Grandmothers name was Elizabeth Thompson lived until aged 97, died in St Thomas ,Exeter.(was in service prior to marriage, she may originally have been welsh )
Grandfather was William Squance (Farm Worker) both from north Devon area, sorry I cannot be more precise, They had I think 5 sons,3 daughters. (Number of children in bkts)
My father Gordon Squance (3),His brother Ken (2) died 15/7/2006 aged 74)in RD&E Exeter & was married to Nora. Other brothers Jack (2) & Bill (2) Daughters Edie/Edith ( emigrated to Australia) Hilda (3) Gerty (2)
At one time they lived at Powderham and son Reg drowned in the exe estuary and is buried in powderham church yard. they then moved to Silverton ,Devon, there my father Gordon Married a Doreen Thomas from Bickleigh nr Tiverton ,they probably married at Tiverton, registry office in 1946/7, they had two children Mary and Carol before devorceing,
Gordon then remarried ( I child Michael )and moved to Torrington as a baker confectioner and later Bideford as a publican, he died approx 5 years ago ,possibly Dec 2004 aged 79/80.
Grandfather Williams brother was a grave digger in Winkleigh if that helps, sorry to be so sketchy But I didnt have any contact with that side of my family until a recent chance encounter with an elderly aunt and uncle after some 50 years, Kindest regards Mary
