My mother was Lilian Doreen Madge, b.1920 in Torquay, related to Ann Squance b.1849 in Roborough, John Squance b.1799 and George Squance. I have not been successful in tracing accurate details of George, his wife and his predecessors and would be grateful for any help you could give me. Many thanks.

Hello,
I do have details of your family back to 1602 - please contact me off-list and I'll send you the tree. John MADGE 1846's brother William also married a SQUANCE - Mary.

Delving deep into our parish magazines for 1894, I came across mention of a Dora Squance who took part in a Christmas entertainment in the village of Barningham, North Yorkshire. The name was so unusual I Googled it and came up with this website. If anyone out there knows anything about a Squance family in this part of the world in late Victorian times, I'd be delighted to hear from them. Our local history society has no record of them at all.

Hi

I am a Squance living in Western Australia interested in finding out more about my ancestry. The only other Squances here I know of are my grandparents and father.

Hello,
My mother was a SQUANCE which started me on my research of the name and I now conduct what is known as a 'One-Name Study'. There were several branches of the family that emigrated to Australia - if you would like to tell me your grandparents names I can probably take you back several generations.

Walter James 1858-1912 was born in Plymouth. He was one of 9 children, most of whom did not survive into marriage. 2 sisters married. Most SQUANCEs are related through Walter James' father's side of the family.
Walter James had 16 children, the oldest 3 were born in Plymouth but moved to Ireland with their parents when they were very young. All other children were born in Eire before the family moved to BAngor in 1907.
