To all researching the Squance name, I hold records and documentation for approximately 900 Squances, dating back to 1602. I would love to share this information. It includes Devon, Cornwall, Wales, Ireland etc. etc.

My interest is in an Ann(e) Squance or Scane who married John Tite in Stalbridge, Dorset - I am unsure of the date - I have 1807 or 9 Nov. 1809. She was supposed to have been born in Stalbridge around 1786. Do you have any Squances in Dorset? Stalbridge is in N. Dorset on the border with Wiltshire.

Best Regards

Dear Alison,
I believe your Ann was a SCANE and not a SQUANCE, as the Squances do not appear to have been in Dorset, although there were some QUANCEs at Batcombe, Somerset, who evolved into SQUANCEs, ca 1830. However, most of those either emigrated to Australia, or moved to Wales.
SCANE appears to be more of a Wiltshire name, so maybe her family originated there.
You will really need to look at the original register (or have someone do it for you) to determine what it says, and whether there are any other clues.

Yes, I did have the impression that there were quite a few Scanes in Wilts and Stalbridge is on the border of Wilts. I have some distant relatives (found through internet) who are going into Dorset record office in February. I have asked them to try and find something - if they have time. Thanks. Alison

Hi Deborah,
I'm a descendent of a Massachusetts QUANCE who I believe came from Batcombe in Somersetshire E. You mentioned (below) that some QUANCE's became SQUANCE. Did the switch the other way ever occur? I'm looking for the ancestry of Joshua QUANCE who was in the Rev war from Bridgewater MA (b 1752) He appears to be a possible match with a Joshua who was b to James and Anne WEEKS QUANCE in Batcombe in 1752. I've never come across the name SQUANCE in the US, but I'll try that spelling for some of Joshua's children who seem to appear, disappear and then appear again in census records. I've tried about every variant of QUANCE I can think of in an attempt to find them with spotty results.

Dear Betsey,
I have seen QUANCE->Squance->Quance,
but not often. Other variants you might want to look at are:
QUANTS, QUANTZ, QUONCE, QUINCE.
The Batcombe, Somerset Quance/Squances are not related to my line as far as I can tell.
Good luck with your searches!

Hi Deborah,
Thanks for your reply. I'm quite familiar with the variations you suggest as well as a bunch that I couldn't have come up with in my wildest dreams (but census takers did). There are so few QUANCEs that it should be easy to find them, but it isn't at least partly because of variant spellings. Do you have any evidence that SQUANCE was ever found in the US?

Re North Yorks Squances: the one I'm interested in was called Dora Squance, resident N/Yorks c 1893 - age unkniwn, may well have been a child.
