My 3rd Great-grandmother was Ann Squance (m. Thomas Southwood). Would you have have any information about her line?

A slightly odd one for you!

A Lilian Squance allegedly married a chap called variously Len, Charles or Mac Crapp somewhere around the latter half of the 1920s. The various researchers I work with have been unable to find an actual wedding so we suspect none took place. However, we do know a child was born and we have the birth certificate which states the mother as Lilian Crapp and her maiden name as Squance. The child was born in Wales (Llandilofawr rural district) but the fathers occupation involved travelling (he drove a road roller and moved around the country).

I appreciate it is a bit vague, but this gentleman seems to have made a career out of being elusive and contradictory!

Interesting. It appears that they had 5 children - Leonard, Lena, John, Florence & Valerie.
I have one possible Lily SQUANCE shown in the 1911 census aged 5, apparently the daughter of a Sarah SQUANCE with sister Rachel and a brother H. - 11 months, all born Glamorgan.
I believe the father to be Henry E. SQUANCE (b 1883 Penrhiwceiber) who married Sarah MORGAN in 1900. Henry's father, John was born 1857 as John QUANCE - his people were from Somerset and after a few years in Wales became SQUANCE.
Unfortunately - I don't know any more!

That is indeed the children.
What I have from a descendant of Lilian (who didn't know exactly where she was from, but thought London...). The birth of the children seems to end in 1934 and according to my source, Lilian ran off with another man! Len seems to have returned to his "real" wife - a lady called Sarah Lily (nee Davi(e)s) and you can see another child - with mother maiden name of Davis born in 1936!

I suspect we shall never find the real Lilian unless some more clues appear. The idea she was from Wales certainly fits with them meeting and living there though... London seems a bit out really.

He was a rogue to be honest - the marriage to Sarah Lily Davies, he claimed, was not legal as he had been drunk and Sarah's mother had paid for the wedding.....
Sarah was obviously pregnant at the time, which I guess is why the mother offered to pay. However, he soon scarpered and bigamously married another lady (and was caught!)

He then seems to have shacked up with Lilian Sqaunce - and perhaps used the wedding certificate from his first marriage to a Lily QUANCE (who died fairly soon afterwards) as proof they were married? Who can tell...

Many thanks for your input - much appreciated

He seemed to like his Lily's! The coincidence between the QUANCE & SQUANCE connection seems a bit strange. Lilian may not have been a SQUANCE at all.....
