Dear Jemima, I was forwarded a copy of your message - I'm the SQUANCE message board administrator, and have conducted a one-name study of the name. Nice to meet you. - You are my 4th cousin, twice removed. I have full details of your family - Mark and I have previously been in contact, and I have sent Benjamin his tree too. so let me know if you would like me to e-mail you your ancestry. Re: Squance, Plymouth, Devon, England
My mothers family were Squances. Her grandmother's name is May Squance who had two sisters called Annie and bessie and lived in Swnsea, South Wales. We have been trying to find out some more on the family but have not got very far. You sound as if you have an extensive Squance background. Would you be able to help? Thanks Nicky

Re: Squance, Plymouth, Devon, England
When approx was your grandmother born? I have several Swansea families of SQUANCEs. I have data on most SQUANCEs ever born up to about 1910, and many others besides.

Re: Squance, Plymouth, Devon, England
I've now had a chance to look through my files, and can tell you the following: The 1901 census for Swansea shows: RG13/5069 Folio 12 page 15 Schedule 86 Pantvilia (?) Rd Michel SQUANCE age 48 b. Shipley, Devon, Tinplate Worker (Index transcribes as MICHEL - close examination shows it to be Richard) Martha SQUANCE aged 46 b. Swansea Bessie SQUANCE 19 b. Swansea, Tailoress Albert SQUANCE 14 b. Swansea (Birth reg'd as Richard Albert SQUANCE Dec qtr 1886, Swansea district, vol 11a page 684) May SQUANCE 6 b.Swansea
Annie SQUANCE 19 b. Swansea, General Domestic Servant is living nearby.
In 1881 the family is shown: Richard SQUANCE Head M Male 26 Shipwash, Devon, England Labourer (should read Sheepwash, although baptism didn't take place there) Martha SQUANCE Wife M Female 25 Loughor, Glamorgan, Wales Sarah Ann SQUANCE Daur Female 2 Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales William John SQUANCE Son Male 1 Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales Source Information: Dwelling Patriot Road Census PlacePenderry, Glamorgan, Wales Family History Library Film 1342289 Public Records Office Reference RG11 Piece / Folio 5350 / 101 Page Number 19
Richard SQUANCE married Martha LAKE Swansea district, March qtr 1878, vol 11a page 646. If you obtain the marriage certificate it should give a father's name & occupation. I say should, because, I strongly suspect that Richard was an illegitimate son of one of the following family: Parents: John SQUANCE 1791-1864, wife Mary DAMERELL 1793-1881 Surviving children: Susanna1819; Richard 1828; Mary 1828 (yes, twins, as were Bessie & Annie - twins are prevalent throughout the SQUANCEs), John 1829 (moved to Canada), Josias 1831 & James 1837.
If you manage to trace the marriage certificate, please let me know the details - it may provide valuable clues.
