Re: Hugh Sprott (1764-1842), Lincoln Co, NC

I have read posts which appear to suggest Hugh Sprott (1764-1842) was the son of another Hugh who was a brother of the John Sprott who married E Atkin.

I am a gggg grandson of James Sprott (c1754-1846), son of the above John. Our family is still in Ireland. I have a copy of a family tree drawn up about 50 years ago. I don't know what the sources were - probably just family tradition and maybe a couple of sketchy bible entries.

Some of the names are a bit off, for example Mary Bothwell who married Robert Sprott is recorded as "Mary Bowden." But other than that everything has so far proved pretty accurate. According to the tree, John Sprott who married E Atkin was the son and grandson of John Sprotts as follows:

John Sprott, son of John Sprott, had issue:
- John Sprott, m. Eileen Aiken [sic]
- female Sprott, m. McKeown
- Samuel Sprott
- female Sprott m. Hanna
- Hugh Sprott
- female Sprott m. Watt

As you can see, there is a Hugh Sprott, brother of John, and apparently, son of John. Is he yours?

There is a note on the tree to say that John Sprott and Eileen Aiken/Atkin were married in 1754, and she apparently lived to the age of 103.

I'm fresh to researching this branch of my family, so I don't know how new or otherwise this information will be.

Ganstry

I have several leads into the Randolph side of the family as well. i am not certain but based upon some of the early research it seems like 2 Moreth kids married 2 Sprotts. - Anyone know if the Sprotts were close or distant relatives or just one of those odd coincidences?

I'm also on the Mundia ancestry site burgundy47 and at WikiTree and I consolidate most of my research there under Lukowski-8 I am more than willing to share most of the info I have.

Sprott, Elsa (Elsa Skiles Neely)
Sprott, George (George Liggett Sprott)
Sprott, Margaret (Margaret Francies)
Sprott, Mary (Mary Moreth)
Sprott, Nancy (Nancy S unknown Sprott)
Sprott, Robert (Robert Sprott)
Sprott, Thomas (Thomas S Sprott)
Sprott, William (William Sprott)
1.Mary (Moreth) Sprott (November 13, 1876 - December 13, 1962) m.
My records indicate basically the same list of Hugh and Catherine's children and their spouses as Katrina has provided, with a few additional details, to wit:

James (1795-1840), m. Mary Anna Devebaugh
Catherine (1798-1865), m. Elijah Taylor Sullivan
William (1799-1848), m. Sarah Hause
Alston Hugh (1803-1853), m. Elizabeth Dunn
Nancy (1806-after July 1870), m. Pearson Shull
Jane (1808-1879), m. (1) Berry P. Grigg, (2) Noah Bess
Thomas (1810-1867), m. Nancy Ann Cline
Joseph (1813-1895), m. (1) Harriet Ann Lesesne, (2) Susan Magdalena Wells

(Thomas was my husband's g-g-grandfather.)

Regarding the spelling of the last name, I don't believe it was a matter of a formal change from Sprott to Spratt (or vice versa), but rather a use of both spellings more or less interchangeably until later generations elected to use one or the other (if anything, "Spratt" appears to be more common among the earlier generations).

Jennifer Boger
My mother's research shows the following children of Hugh Sprott who immigrated from Ireland to North Carolina. He later changed the spelling of his name to Spratt. Hugh Spratt was my great, great, great grandfather. Hugh Spratt had a sister (Sarah) and two brothers (Henry and Moses) who remained in Ireland. His brother, Joseph, immigrated to America finally settling in Clarendon County, SC. He was a batchelor. Joseph kept the Sprott spelling of his name.

Hugh and Catherine Spratt's Children

James (1795 - 1840) married Anna Devebaugh
Catherine or Katey (1798- 1865)married Elijah Sullivan
William (1799 - 1848) married Sarah House
Hugh (do not know dates of birth or death)
Jane (1808 - 1879) married Barry Griggs and then Noah Bess
Thomas (1810 - 1867)married Nancy Cline
Joseph (1813 - 1895) married Harriet Lesesne; Joseph was my great, great grandfather. Joseph Sprott, a bachelor who was Hugh Sprott's brother, adopted Hugh Sprott's son Joseph at an early age.

I have a copy of Hugh Sprott's will if you are interested.

Katrina Sprott Riley
803-738-3544

Do you know the names of his children? I am a descendant of Alston(Hugh) Sprott, b. 1803 Mecklenburg, NC, d. 1843 Liberty Co., TX. He moved to Alabama where 5 children were born before moving to Livingston, Texas.
I think that Alston may be the son of Hugh.

Unfortunately, Katrina, I have found anyone with conclusive proof of Hugh's parents, though I have seen posts from some descendants (and there seem to be a lot of us out here interested in researching this line) suggesting that he was born to another Hugh Sprott (Spratt, etc.) and one Jane Boyd. I believe this hypothesis is based on examination of Dromore parish records. Certainly "Jane" figures as a popular given name among our Hugh's female descendants.

My husband (who, like you, is a 3-g-grandchild of Hugh's) and J have visited White Zion Methodist Cemetery (in Lincoln County, not Mecklenburg), NC, where he is buried along with some of his children, including his son Thomas, from whom my husband is descended. The church is gone but the cemetery has been fairly well preserved.

Jennifer Boger

Robert Carnachan Sprott & Frances Margaret Mylchreest

Frances Margaret Mylchreest was my Great Grandmother's sister. Frances was born on 2nd March 1872 in the parish of Arbory on the Isle of Man. Her parents were John Robert Mylchreest and Frances Arnold. Frances married Robert Carnachan Sprott of Wigtownshire Scotland in Liverpool in 1895.

The family appear on the 1901 and 1911 Census in Scotland apart from in 1911 when Robert C Sprott was recorded on the English Census on board a ship. They emigrated on 21/8/1911 and arrived in Brisbane Australia on the Torilla on 10/10/1911. If any Sprotts in Australia would like any information about the Mylchreest side of this family please get in touch.

Colin

Hello Stephen,

I'm not searching for Sprots or Sproats. My hobby, or should I say 'obsession' is graveyarding. There's nothing I enjoy more than wandering round old graveyards. Every now and then I post a message about a surname or location in the hope I can maybe help some budding genealogist find a long lost relative. A lot of the graveyards I visit are very old and although some of them have already been transcribed, I just do my 'wee bit'! I also photograph a lot of these old stones as it's not going to be much longer till they're gone completely either through erosion, vandalism or just old age!

Anne
Hi Kath
Thanks for your reply--this sounds promising although as you say,no direct link yet. From what I've (not) been able to find the name seems a bit rare,I would think that there's some link between your Christopher and my Jane ,especially if he was born in Tweedmouth. I've sent off to a guy in Cumbria who deals with a one name group dealing with Sprot's--I haven't got his address at present but when he replies I'll let you know (if you haven't already got in touch with him---let me know if not.
I'll be in touch
Phil :o)

SPROTT - Scotland

Came across the this on a rcent 'graveyarding' expedion in Muiravonside Parish Church Graveyard, near Falkirk, Scotland. The tombstone/monumental inscription reads:

"Sacred to the memory of Joseph Sprott died 2nd October 1893 aged 76. His wife Agnes Russell died 31st Jnuary 1889 age 72. Their daughter Eliza Jane who died 8th April 1868 aged 12 years 5 months.

I hope this wee snippet helps someone seeking 'Sprott' ancestors.

Anne

We have a copy of a document written by Andreas in 1936 listing his children and their birthdates and birthplaces. He was about 77 years old when he wrote this so there could be some mistakes as to dates. His writing lists the following: August-4/3/1878 (Germany); Ida-5/23/1880 (Germany); Auguste 2/28/1884 (Germany); Otto 12/7/1885 (Germany); Paul 2/24/1888 (America-Kendall County)(died of rattlesnake bite-date unknown); Willie 12/20/1890 (America-Kerr County, TX); Louis 5/4/1892 (America-Kerr County); Harry 4/20/1894 (America-Kendall); and Anna 12/22/1895 (America-Kerr County). The ones born in Germany were born in Wanzleben by Magdeburg (a larger town) in the province of Sachsen. Andreas wrote Germania for German and Americka for America. Andreas was born Setember 7, 1859 in Osterweddingen and Auguste was born July 30, 1856 in Wanzleben.

Hi Phil,
Nothing explicitly on your Jane Sprot, I'm afraid, but I'm researching Sprots in Northumberland. Just started though. The earliest I've got back to so far is a Christopher Sprot born around 1830 in north Northumberland - Berwick, Tweedmouth, Cornhill or Wooler area. He married a Jane, don't know her maiden name yet, in around 1860. Jane, Christopher's wife, was born around 1837. They were my great-grandparents.
Rgds Kath

I have a copy of his death certificate that states his dad's name is Gottfred (Gottfried?) Sprott, and mom's name is unknown. I also have in family oral tradition that he was born in Austria. I see that he himself wrote that he was born in Wanzleben, so that's good enough verification for me!

My grandmother was Verda Blanche Sprott. Her father was Riley Langdon Sprott. Her mother was Edna Agnes Bolton. This is all I have. She married Jesse Reed Chapman and had either 5 or 6 kids.

My great grandmother - I believe_ was Alice Sprott from around the Huntsville area...maybe of Raven Hill, a plantation. Aunt told me the slaves inherited the plantation. Alice Sprott married Robert Fulton. My Grandmothers name was Emma Fulton Willis. Let me know it this sounds familiar.

Dan was born in June of 1856. I located his name on the 1880 census at age 24. I haven't found him on the 1870 census yet. We were told that he was the only child of his mother and father, but had half brothers and sisters by both parents. I haven't had any luck finding out more about his parents.
I met Alto V. Watson in Beaumont, Texas and he told me my grandfather was raised in Alston's home, but he was up in age, and had some relationships mixed up. So I'm not sure if he meant Dan(my g grandfather) or Ed ( my grandfather). Watson was the son of Emma Sprott and grandson of Andrew Dunn Sprott, and the nephew of your Alfred.
