Hi,
Thought I would share the following. I have been corresponding with a Sprackling researcher in England who has done extensive research on the surname. This is what he sent me:
It appears that many Americans researching Spradling, or one of the many variations, lay claim to descendancy from Sir Adam Sprackling. All of the genealogies I have looked at indicate the flow as follows:
Sir Adam
Son Robert (they always have him married to a Joan??)
Grandson James
Great grandson Andrew Spradling or Spradlinge
Let me set the record straight.
The lineage is as follows:
1 Sir Adam Sprakeling (Knight) married Katheren Estday
2 Robert Sprakeling married Margaret Moyle
3 Katherine
3 Maria married Henry Estday
3 Adam married Katherine Leuk(e)ner
(Adam publicly hanged for killing wife)
4 Robert
4 Margaret
4 Adam
4 Mary
3 Robert married Rebecca Lamynge/Lamming
4 Robert
4 Adam
3 Margaret married Robert Knowler; married
Matthew Hadd
3 Margery
2 Adam Sprackling married Anna Hayman
3 ROBERT married DOROTHY MASTER(S)
4 Ann
4 Giles married Dorothy Fogge
4 Robert
4 Adam
4 Rebecca
3 Catherine
3 Rebecca
3 Henry
Sir Adam and Katheren Estday also had children Judith, Elizabeth, Catherine, Mary, John, Agnes, Katheren, Margery, Frances, Henry, Margaret, Henry, Charles, Hannah/Anne, Thomas.
Yes, 2 daughters named Catherine/Katheren and two sons named Henry. This generally occurred when a child died, the next of the gender named after the dead child.
NO GRANDSON OR GREAT GRANDSON NAMED JAMES IN THE LOT.
I will send you a photographed copy of “The Visitation of Kent, 1619”. It is the lineage record in Old English of Sir Adam’s family. It may be difficult to follow but it shows the same as above.
From what I have seen online many Americans attach to a James Sprackling who is found in an early record in America. That is a leap of faith with no documentation presented whatsoever even though I have asked time and time again.
