I have a picture and very little else about a relative of mine Frank Osborne that went to live with the Spowage family in Nottingham England the picture is dated 1918. There are 5 adults in the picture and Frank looks to be about 12. kind of a mystery why he was in England. Have you any info that may help. I am doing genealogy and have info on Osborne but only this picture of Spowage. Arlen

Hello Gary,

Have you tried searching in the births and marriages indexes on Ancestry? With surnames like those it's easy to find the marriage in 1911 and the birth index entries for 10 children, born between 1912 and 1932. If you have problems, let us know. :-)

Christine

I have been to the Southern Cemetery today at Wilford Hill.
Located the plot where the West grave was, sought out someone to verify that I was looking in the right place. When I was a little girl I used to go about once a month with my mother, it was in the place I remembered, just a little way from the stand pipe from which I was allowed to fetch fresh water for flowers. Unfortunately, the last time I remembered going was when I was about 9 years old. The grave used to have some kind of an edging around it and there was a pot placed there. Nothing is there now, it is listed as an unmarked grave, we searched stones against the walls and looked through pots which weren't placed anywhere, without success. I have the correct details of where the grave is and of those buried in it, dates, names etc., but can't find any more information. Val.

I am a great grandson of Herberts' (Bert to family and friends) brother and Business Partner William Spowage. Together they founded Spowage Humphreys and Wyer 00154888 a lace machine manufacturing business on may sixth 1919. The business went under eventually as demand for Lace fell through the floor. However it was not dissolved until 2004. One of the last directors was a Charles Spowage. Highly likely to be a Grandson of Bert! If you go to Companies House you will be able to find Charles' address. ....... Good luck.

Matt

You possibly already know there is a Spowage / West gravestone at the Lenton Church in Nottingham. It is the second tallest stone in the graveyard.

I can't remember much more. But since discovering this thread I will be consulting with my Grannie Mrs Sheila Spowage who was born in 1910 and remembers everything.

Hi Rob,

I just noticed your posting in Ancestry.com. My gr grandfather, William Henry Morley, had a half-sister named Priscilla. She used the last name of her deceased father, Parkes. Priscilla married Herbert Spowage in Chesterfield in 1880. They wound up moving to the Scunthorpe area, as did my great grandfather. Hebert and Priscilla had following children as of 1901 census: Harry, 17, Rosa, 11, Charles, 5, and Arthur, 3. Is this by any chance your family? And if not, have you by now located other Spowage descendents that might be my family. I would enjoy making contact.
Don't think I can be of much help to you, I will list the information I have regarding Spowage family in Nottingham.. My Grandfather was John William Spowage, married Alice nee West, they had one living child, a daughter born in 1920 Clarice Edith, she died in 1981. I believe John William was born between the years 1891 and 1900. I know he died before 1940. Alice was born in 1900 and died in 1955. The family lived at 9 Sherwood Cottages, Nottingham. John William's occupation was a motor fitter. Good luck with your search. Val Beech

This is really a shot in the dark. But have come to a dead end looking for a reletive. His name was Benjamin Frank Osborne. He was born in Michigan USA in1891. for some reason he moved to England in 1918 and a picture I have of him says" This is my home in Nottingham. That is Mrs. Spowage standing behind me." He is the only one that moved to England ???? would only have been 17 or younger. Any info would be great. Thank you Arlene
