CROWN POINT - Well-known area restaurateur Mike Spiccia's credo was not just
serving culinary delicacies but also believing that everyone who dined at his
establishments deserved VIP treatment.
Mr. Spiccia, 89, who died Monday, opened his first restaurant, The Tivoli,
in 1940, and went on to manage two others in the Whiting/Robertsdale area.
Whiting Mayor Robert Bercik called Spiccia's restaurant "an institution in
our city created by a very special gentleman.
"Whenever you walked through his doors, Mike would acknowledge you. He was a
hugger and a greeter who rolled out the red carpet for everyone."
Bercik lauded the restaurant not only for its ambiance, but also for the
fine food.
"On a scale of one to 10, Mike's Italian dishes rated tops," Bercik said.
Jim Sandrick, immediate past president of the Whiting/Robertsdale Chamber of
Commerce, can remember that good food and hospitality were key at Mike
Spiccia's restaurant.
"Mike was an excellent host," he said. “He would greet you with, 'Hey
boss!' and welcome you with open arms."
Sandrick also recalled that Mr. Spiccia would not only cook the most
delectable chicken Vesuvio, but would also take time out to play his concertina
and entertain his patrons.
"Mike would play Italian folk tunes for you while you enjoyed his great
pasta dishes," Sandrick said.
Patrons may no longer be greeted by Mr. Spiccia's gracious smile and special
brand of hospitality, but his family said they will carry on the family
tradition by keeping the doors of his restaurant open.
"My father's love for his customers was a priority and one he'd want us to
continue," said Mr. Spiccia's daughter Josephine Arrighi.
Mr. Spiccia was a proprietor of Spiccia's Restaurant; a member of the
National Restaurant Association; National Tavern Association; Cesare Batristi
Lodge No. 27; member of the Whiting Chamber of Commerce; and a member of St.
