My maiden name is Speich and I was born in Syracuse to Charles W Speich and Berneice Sutton. If you are still out there in the ether, feel free to write me. mothers family came from Iowa, but I have been told that my Dad's family originally came from Switzerland.

Can you share your travel experience to Switzerland. I would like to go there and thought flying into Luzerne and renting a car to drive to Matt. What was you itinerary? I am on a budget so I'll have to stay in Hostels. I don't know if there is public transportation to Matt. How populated was it? any and all information would be appreciated. thanks

I am looking for ancestors of Jeanne F. Speich of Hamburg, NY. Her father was Charles Speich born in August 1887. Her mother was Alice K., probably from Ireland. Jeanne was my husband's mother. Any help you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Jeanne had a cousin named Frank Collins.

Can anyone help me any additional information, particularly of parents, of Abraham Speich who moved from Matt in Canton Glarus to Luchsingen on 7.11.1566 with his wife Verena Hefti with three children one of whom was Matthias born +/- 1570. He was accompanied by his brother Franz with his wife Anna Jenni and four children.

My Peter Speich was married to Filhilminnie Meyer they married
in Switzerland they came over abt. 1893 or 1894 they traveled
with two babies Jacob and Mary Spiech they had four other
children after arriving in the States Barbara my Great Grandmother
and her brothers Peter, Martin, Matthew they setteled in Broadhead
Juda Wisconsin and then moved to Arpin they were Naturalized
May 31, 1909, I have only one Picture of Peter and Filhilminnie
which was taken when they were about 60 yrs of age.
If what we have matches I will send you what I can to help
with your search.

Entered U. S. 1843
Michael is listed in 1850 New York State, Wayne County Census
He's listed as a boarder, (No Specht family members listed).
After 1850, I lost him, but have Louis's line in Buffalo, Erie County, New York

Hello ,
I'm reasearch Peter Speich and Minnie Meyers .
I'm not sure if they married in Switzerland or Wisconsin.
What I'am told is that they came over and settled in Broadhead Wisconsin and then moved on to Arpin Wood
County Wisconsin during the logging boom .
My Grandfather is Franklin L Nimm son of John Nimm
of Arpin Wisconsin , Minnie may have been Named
Philomina Meyers .
Mina is the name I find in census records for Wood Cty.
I have found several newspaper articals on Peter Spiech
for Wood Cty.
Any Info wood be helpful will share what I have in return

Father - Michael Specht, ca. 1810, France
Son - Louis Specht/Speich, 1833, Paris, France
Louis and his wife, Elisabeth Bruder had 9 Children,
Edward Earl Speich was my Grandfather
Michaeol was in Wayne Co, NY , 1850 census.
That was the last of him, until his son, Louis
showed up in the City of Buffalo, Erie, NY city directories in the late 1850's.

My Uncle Gary Speich has traced our Speich name back to Germany to about 1060 or so. He also went to Swisserland and met some of the Speichs there. If you would like the book I would be more then happy to make you a copy. Our side of the Speichs went to Wisconsin in about 1880.

Our grandmother was Rachel Speich who lived in Syracuse, NY. She married William Barnes and had children whose names were Dorothy, John, Arthur, George and Ann and possibly others. For reference John was born in 1901. We believe Rachel died before 1920 or possibly early 1920's. Does this strike a chord with anyone?

While checking message boards, I saw your reply regarding Rachel Speich from Syracuse, NY. My Grandmother was Anna Speich, b 1866 d 1947 immigrated aprox. 1884, married to Emanuel Schmidt. My family also was living in the Syracuse, NY area. I have not been able to find any other information. Could Rachel and Anna be related? Any information regarding the Speich line would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

Michael SPEICH was born in 1823 Switzerland. Maybe your Michael Speich from France moved to Switzerland before he moved to the US. I need to check my records more accurately to fine death date.

I recently found out through the Mormon genealogical library resources that there was another son named melchior. Also found that Michael's wifes' maiden name was legler and goes back to 1600's. Anyway we probably are related but how and who and where is the question. It's fun doing this work. Thanks for your reply.

I found out through the LDS that Joachim Speich came to US alone when he was 25. His father was Michael and mother Maria magdelena LEGLER. Some relative had them all baptizzed in the Mormon church. I can't get back much past the Michael Marriage but have gotten back to 1500 with Legler. There must be some relation since they are from the same town.

little about my family...but not all that much..
i know that my great great grand father was named
Alexander and that him and his brother and
sister came to america....he settled in New Jersey
and his brother and sister went out west...
thats about all that i know....if anyone can tell me

Kevin, Thanks for the info. I had an aunt who also visited Glarus but seem to have more info on the Hefty/Baumgart
dner side. She also found a cousin David Speich still living in Gl;arus but I believe he passed on.. There are supposed to be several cousins in their 50's still over there. My cousin in Montana keeps hinting we should go over there and maybe we will too. Again thanks for the Info. I amy contact you again later after I rereaad some of her notes. Judy

Dear Judy, Hi. My name is Kevin Speich and i live in Janesville, Wisc. My Grandfather immigrated from Matt,GL. Schweiz(Switzerland) in 1898. I have been to the bibliotek in Glarus, Schweiz to research my roots. It is a wonderful place with many books on the villages of Glarnerland. I had real proof of my Grossvaters village because we fortunately kept all of Grandfathers original visas and passports. On his passport visa were the names of his parents surnames( meaning his mother's surname also). a stroke of luck for me, i simply asked for the village of Matt and i was on my way. You see, each entry in the family list is given a number, a number is also present to indicate who his father was, for example my grandfather would have say the no. 58 before his name and a no. would be after his name also. This is the no. to look up for his father.
so back and back one goes until the entries end. I traced my line to 1528. OH, in this village TWO Speichs exist. MY line starts with Rudolfo the other line starts with Jacob. I hope this is of use for you. Let me know what you find out, if i can help you out, feel free to E-mail. I just got back from Matt three days ago from a visit to my relatives. Oh yes i did find relatives, two first cousins to my father. Katerina is 93 years young.

Jennifer, My mother was a Speich. Her father and grandfather were both named Tobias Speich who lived in Nebraska. The grandfather Speich came from Switzerland, Canton Glarus. The elder Tobias had a brother named Emmanual and a nephew that came with them named Melchior Figi. They apparently all came from Luchzingen, Canton Glarus.Unfortunately, I do not know of Micheal Speich but really wonder if we are not related somehow.
