Was unable to work the adress you sent. You are probably refering to the Anson Co., NC, militia roster. Probably they did not split off those militia men living in the new Richmond Co. for a few years. When they did was most likely when Wm. was elected Major.
The other Wm. seems to have been a rounder. Another Wm. was in jail in Mexico. He had killed a local by hitting him in the head with a bar stool. The family had to pool finances to get him out. Those things make this more interesting.

Good Friday Morning Bert:

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Now that the niceities are over, I would like
to know the maiden name of your (My?)
William T.s Elizabeth. You said that she
perhaps remarried a Martin but what was she
before her marriage. If I know that maybe I
can learn for sure (?) if she if my William's
mate.

Be good guy and keep writing. This is fun.

Use my e-mail address - bertsped@brightok.net.
I don't know Elizabeth's maiiden name. Years ago a friend found a marriage between Elizabeth Hickman and a William Speed. Unfortunately, I did not followup.
Elizabeth's second marrige to Zach Martin is a matter of record - Page 14, Richmond County, N. C., Clerk of Superior Court, Minutes of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, 1779-1792, film of typescript, located in LDS library, Salt Lake City.

Cannot make contact with Ellis Ulmer message #38. My system is too slow and not very powerful - prefer E-mail contact if possible.
Just wanted Ellis to know I tried to get back to answer

John and Sarah Speed 1751 is the furthest back I can trace - the name Maximilian Speed is prevalent through many generations. Does this help Ellis

I may have misled you. Elizabeth, widow of Maj. Wm. Speed of Richmond Co., NC, md. 2nd. Zach. Martin. This Wm. Speed is not Wm. T. Speed. Maj. Wm. Speed was dead when Wm. T. Speed wrote the letter quoted is "Records and Memorials of the Speed Family."

I am from this line also. Wm. T was married to Mary Wages in 1748 in Surrey Co. Va. Daughter of Robert Wages. Their son was Robert Wages Speed. He was married to an Elizabeth Martin in 1782.
My info came from "The Records and Memorials of the Speed Family. I have researched this family since the 60's before computers and have them back to the 1500's in England, all the way to now.
