Re: Overton Southern b. 1803 in North Carolina

I have been researching Overton and Habrum Sutherland of Guilford County, NC to determine if they might be related to my ancestor Alvis Sutherland who is seen along with another Sutherland named Frances "Fanny" Sutherland on the 1820 Guilford County US Census report. Frances appears to be a widow as there is no male of the right age living in her household. I believe she later married a Rueben Minor. My ancestor, Alvis moved on to Roane County, TN by 1830 and died there in 1939. I have never been able to determine his parents. However his name is unique as is the names Overton and Habrum, so I am wondering if they might be related. One researcher indicated Overton (b 1803) was the son of Overton Sr. (b1772). There is no documentation on her tree to prove this or indicate where this information came from so it may be just speculation. If you do find any indication that Alvis was related to your guys please let me know. By the way, Alvis also had a younger brother named Robert Henry if this is of any help. Robert moved to Tenn with Alvis before 1830.
Yes ThomasSouthern Sr was originally from England and moved to Canada and remarried I believe...I don't have my notes with me. That's (jr) died in 1904 if I am remembering correctly, as a result of being gored by a bull on a farm in Ohio were he was working. One of my relatives found information that his wife Elizabeth had filed abandonment papers against him around 1902 as he had left her and their 7 children in Sarnia Ontario Canada. Eventually she remarried Edwin Cooke and moved to Mottville NY were they are both buried. I am not currently on Ancestry but let me know if you have any other questions :-)

I am researching this same family for a descendant in central New York. Both Thomas Southorns appear in the Canadian census records on Ancestry.com. I had actually assumed that Thomas Sr. was perhaps previously married given that he was 9 years older than Mary, or that Thomas Jr. was the orphaned child of another Southorn family member already living in Canada.

Also, I have a different maiden name for Mary, wife of Thomas Sr. You can burial information and obituaries for them on the link below.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jaiwilliam...

Apologies if this is information you already have given the date of your post.
Do you happen to have any additional details re the 1904 Ohio death of Thomas Southorn?

Looking forward to hearing from you!
Kathy
Well, about 4 years have passed since Vickie first posted this... And we've found out a lot since then... Pictures of the original gun... rumors about what happened to Oscar Prince after he left town (I would love to hear any and all rumors if anyone has any more to share).... When we had this discussion years ago, I didn't know that much about the descendants of my great great grandfather's siblings yet... But in review about this CRAZY mixed up family situation, here's what we now know...

William Miles Southern was the father of James A Southern (William Oscar and Robert H "Crazy Bob" Southern's dad), Miles L Southern (Homer Southern's father), Mary Arminda Southern Foster (Lelah and Beulah Foster's mother), and Robert R Southern... among other children that is.

Robert R Southern was married to Kate Hambrick, who also killed someone in the past. Roxanna "Roxie" Hambrick Prince was Kate's sister and Oscar Prince's mother. Roxie also served time for her part in the murder that Kate committed in Pickens County, Georgia. (See this file about the murder in Pickens County: https://www.dropbox.com/s/t9hkzsi9rg1lxbv/Murder%20in%20Pick...)

Roxie's son Harlie married Mary Arminda Southern Foster's daughter Lelah. They were married before the William Oscar murder occurred because in the 1920 census, they had a 5 year old child together, and the murder happened in 1916.

Homer Southern (son of Miles L Southern) did marry his first cousin, Beulah Foster (daughter of Mary Arminda Southern Foster). I didn't put this fact together until today in my own mind, even though it was mentioned in the original conversation.

I also know from pictures that both my cousin and Vickie sent me that the Prince family and some of the Southern family appeared to be close friends before all of this happened. I've attached one so that maybe some of you can help me identify especially the two people in the back right. I would absolutely die if I found out that I have a picture of Oscar Prince, but I'm pretty sure he's not in this picture. From census records, it appears that he was only like 17 or 18 when this happened. Particularly it was the sons of Miles L Southern who seemed to friends with the Prince guys. Because there was the marriage between Lelah Foster and Harlie Prince, I'm sure that they all remained somewhat close, but I'm sure that things HAD to have been touchy for a long time. William Oscar was living further out in Marion County, while Miles L Southern's sons were living in the same community closer to the point where Marion, Winston and Franklin Counties all meet. The indictment came down from Franklin County. It is my family's theory (mostly from hearsay) that they were building a road... a road that is now Highway 243 which goes right through the Newburg/Posey Mill Community where the Princes and some of these Southerns all lived.

Also, on the indictment, I've figured out that Homer, Jim and William listed on there were all sons of Miles L Southern. The Butlers on there were Mattie Catherine Southern Butler (William Oscar's sister), her husband Bill and their son Clifford.

I know it's not going to happen, but i would give anything if I could figure out what ever happened to Oscar Prince for the memory of my grandfather who tried to find out himself until he was too old to do it anymore. I'm sure that he probably changed his name, and that there would have been no record of that in those days.

As for the reason, I'm obviously going to still believe the version of the story that my great-great-aunt told our family about Oscar Prince picking on William Oscar's brother, Robert "Crazy Bob" Southern, who was mentally slow, and William Oscar coming to his defense. He may or may not have had a knife on him. Who knows? The whole situation was sad. I don't believe that it was over a woman... at least not one that William Oscar was interested in romantically.

By the way, I mentioned earlier in the conversation about the number of children that my Grandma Southern lost after Grandpa Southern died. I was wrong. At the time of the murder, they had already lost at least 3 kids. The 1910 census showed that she had given birth to 9 children but only 6 were living. By the 1920 census, one of the kids listed on the 1910 census was dead. Next to Grandma and Grandpa Southern's graves, there are 5 plain stones... no writing on them at all. My grandfather once explained to my mother that those were his 5 brothers and sisters and that they had all died before the age of 9 from ailments that are common to us today. One of them died of a pink eye infection. There are no death certificates on file for any of the 5 children. I would give anything to know their names. I just know from the 1910 census that one of them was a son whose name appears to have been Con R, which I believe may have actually been Connor.

I would take exception to the assertion that Roxanna Hambrick served time in the 1877 killing in Georgia .She was 13 years old and I have never hear of any incarceration of my grandmother .Kate Southern was always referred to as crazy Aunt Kate but Roxanna has never been known as tough or crazy.According to Prince family lore Roxanna missed Oscar Prince every day until her death. If you have proof of incarceration please post it or desist in character assassination of a woman that has been dead for 74 years. He had one family in Arkansas was widowed and had two daughters. He remarried and had 3 more children in Indian Territory. Because of the locations I am wondering if there is a connection with Franklin Pierce Southern family. Any info would be appreciated.

Joseph Southern and Sarah Anderton

Joseph Southern and Sarah Anderton are my great-great grandparents. I have noticed that Joseph, in various records and family group sheets, has been listed as having at least three different sets of parents. Recently, I found that Pennsylvania now is listing an index of deaths through about 1960. Today I received copies of both Joseph and Sarah.

Key information for those interested. First Joseph: Birth Date: 9 April 1843. Age at death, 82 years, 9 months, 2 days; date of death: 12 Jan 1928. Place of Death: Snowden Township, Allegheny PA. (many FGS show Greenock which is the approximate location of Mount Vernon Cemetery where he was buried.) Unfortunately, the name of his father and mother both were marked UNKNOWN. However, using his birth date will allow some persons of the same name to be eliminated.

Sarah Anderton Southern: birth date, 10 June 1847; Birth Place: England; date of death: 10 Feb 1911. Place of death: Elizabeth Township, Allegheny, PA. Buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Father's name: Henry Anderton; Mother's name: Ellen Wood.

A third document that may help shed light on Joseph's parents is from a database on FamilySearch.org. England, Marriages 1538 - 1973. It shows Joseph and Sarah married on 29 June 1866 at Ashton under Lynn, Lascaster, England. Joseph's father is listed as James Southern; Sarah's father is Henry Anderton.

On Ancestry.com Internet Site, the 1851 English Census lists a James Sothern and Dinah, who have a son Joseph born about 1843. in Wigan, Lancashire, England. Perhaps this is the correct one.

I hope that this information will allow people searching this surname to review their information and sources. Thanks for reading a rather lengthy letter.

I am looking for the parents of Nelson Andrew (or possibly, Andrew Nelson) Southern, born in either New York or New Jersey around 1886; his wife is Alberta Evans, also of New Jersey. Some records show Nelson as Nelson F, and two draft registrations seem to show conflicting information - different years of birth, etc.

Nelson and Alberta had at least 6 children: Andrew, Mary, Nelson, Beatrice, Florence, and my husband's grandmother, Hazel, who married Gaetano Vitale of New Jersey.

Some of my husband's family seem to think that maybe Southern was not the original last name... I am at a loss, now.

Peter Soles probably was interred in the Old Ninth Street Cemetery in McKeesport and then reinterred in the McKeesport & Versailles Cemetery in 1895 when the old cemetery was removed. There are no records for the early burials in the old cemetery.

Your Peter "Sawel" find is intriguing. It is clear that Dieter Sohl had a son Peter. The last records specific to this Peter is in the mid-1770s, which is when records relating to our Peter Soles begin. I have never found any concrete connection, however.

Re: SOLES IN VIRGINIA

A Peter Sole is listed as an inhabitant of Frederick County, Maryland, with a household of 8 members (2 males at least 16 years of age, 4 males under 16, and 2 females). The census listing for Peter Sole appears seven listings after Michael Miller, Jr.'s, five listing away from Henry Baker's and Jacob Traxall, Jr.'s, three listings after John Shush's, and two listings before Frederick Beard's. The 1800 census of Emmitsburg, Maryland, lists Jacob Traxil and Frederick Beard next to each other and Henry Baker and Michael Miller next to each other (a John Sluss is also listed). This is a good indicator that Peter Sole lived in Emmitsburg, Maryland, in 1790.

The will of Jacob Good of Taneytown. MD, dated 13 March 1783 bequeathed to his wife Eleanor the “house and lot in Taney Town where Peter Sohl lives, while [she remains] a widow.” One of the witnesses to the will was a William Renner. The will was proved 21 March 1783; and Jacob Good’s widow claimed her 1/3rd dower interest on 12 April 1783 which may have, but would not have necessarily, included the house and lot where Peter Sohl was living.

A bill of sale dated 14 May 1783 and recorded in Frederick County, Maryland, evidences that a Peter Sohll of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, sold a "dark bay [reddish-brown?]" stone house called "Wildair" "in plain and open market" in Taneytown (then Frederick County, now Carroll County), Maryland) to a William Renner for £30. The bill of sale, however, contained a proviso that, if Peter Sohll should repay the money within one year, the property would revert to him.

This document is somewhat problematical. First of all, it is not clear whether the house which was sold was in Taneytown or was merely sold by auction in Taneytown. Moreover, although the instrument is styled as a bill of sale, there clearly was no outright sale of the house. There is no record of whether Peter repaid the money or how or when he originally acquired the property. Did Peter, for example, purchase it sometime between 12 April 1783 and 14 May 1783 from Eleanor Good? And did he borrow £30 from William Renner to pay for it?

Unfortunately, the 1784 Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, tax rolls are not extent. However, no Peter Sohll was listed in the Cumberland County tax records in 1782 or 1787 but a Peter Soul is listed as residing in Shippensburg in 1783 and 1785 who owned a house and lot and one horse and cow and a Peter Soal is listed as residing in Shippensburg in 1786 who owned one horse and cow. Moreover the following notice was published in the Carlisle Gazette on 21 February 1787:

Whereas Peter Soal, late of Shippensburgh, Cumberland County, did obtain a bond from me, this is to forewarn persons to refuse assignment of same.

George Eley
Warrington Township
York County
Good Afternoon. I've been doing some research on my family and came across your email (below). I'm from the line of John Soles you list below, who moved into Monongalia County, WV.
I'm interested in anything you'd like to share - particularly anything about Peter Soles. In a book called A History Of Allegheny County, it refers to Peter Soles as having moved to the McKeesport (Versailles) area in 1798, but I believe it also says he's a native of Germany... I'm wondering if you've found anything stating he was a son of Dietrich Sohl - and if they came over together.

There is a book by Israel Daniel Rupp listing passenger manifests of German and Swiss immigrants arriving on ships to Philadelphia (the primary port for immigration from Germany at the time). This book has a Peter Sawel listed on page 398, arriving on ship from Rotterdam named the Minerva in Oct 1769. If the birthdate of 1750 is correct, then (if it's the same person) that would put him at around 19 years of age.

Your post below that I'm referencing is from 2003-2005, so I'm wondering/hoping you may have dug up some new info. Any idea where Peter Soles and Mary Anderson Soles are buried?

Thanks!
Andy Sole

Good Afternoon. I'm hoping you would share the documentation/sources for Peter Soles residing in Emmitsburg, MD; Shippensburg, PA; and Taneytown, MD.

Also, I read in the History of Allegheny County that this Peter Soles was a native of Germany... what might your connections to Dietrich Sohl in Berks County be? I had found a "Peter Sawels" on a ship manifest from Germany (via Rotterdam, the primary egress point for Germans migrating to America in mid 18th century). This is questionable, of course - so I'd love to see a connection to Dietrich Sohl.

Thanks!!
Andy Sole

Yes, Harry did indeed die in Fort Worth, Texas in 1935. His sisters came from PA and took the body back to McKeesport. Harry is buried next to his mother in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

Emily Coffey/Southern/Simmonds & John G Southern

Does anyone out there know these people, they are my late grandparents, they came from New South Wales, Sydney, or thereabouts. John passed away in 1958 and Emily did in about 1965 roughly. I knew her as a child only, and I never knew my grandfather. Emily married Francis Simmonds which marriage I had relatives from, as they had a female child. I do hope someone turns up as my relative, there are still some about in Sydney, but I live in another State and didnt see them a lot, until I was older.

Hello I hope youre still around, John Southern was my late Grandfather, who I never knew. He was married to my late paternal grandmother Emily Coffey, my late father's mother. I knew her from my childhood only. My relatives are Irene, as you know her, Walter, George my uncles, my aunt Edna is long gone, she was Leslie Southern my late fathers sister. I believe there is a John living on the New South Wales Coast, his wife wrote to me long before my late father passed away in 2000. She knew a fair bit but got stuck, I passed her letter on to my Dad but he didnt do anything. Theres a few relatives living in Sydney now, but Id say the siblings of John and Emily are long gone. I do hope you are a relative or know any more information.

Sorry I didn't respond last year, but for some reason either I didn't get the notification or missed it.

No, Overton is still my deadend on this line. I have managed to push back the line on his wife's side, Nancy Heath, if you are interested in that. I can take her father, John Heath, back one more generation to his father, and her mother, Charlotte Morgan, back two more generations.

Re: Burton Southern b 1793 KY

The individual I'm hoping to find information on is listed as Burton in the 1820 - 1850 census records. His last names shifts around a bit. In 1820 he is Burton Southard; 1830 he is Burton Southain; and in 1840 he is Burton Suthern. Only in 1850 is the spelling listed as Burton Southern. In each of those census years, he is listed as living in Orange County, Indiana, except for 1840. That year he is listed as living in Lawrence County, which is next to Orange. There is one other Southern (Suthern) family living in Lawrence County that year, which is Overton Southern.

As for the year of birth, the 1850 census records are what I used to arrive at 1793, and the age ranges for the 1820 - 1840 records are consistent with this. I do not think he was born in 1779. That doesn't fit with any data I have seen.
