My gg-grandparents are William Berry Stephens (1815 – 1885) and Elizabeth White Douglas (1822 – 1911), both buried in Madison County, Fl.

Elizabeth White Douglas was the sister of Margaret and their parents were Archibald McLucas Douglas (1789 – 1846) and Elizabeth White (1795 – 1868), both born in Paisley, Scotland.

I was a patient of Dr Sompayrac in the early 50s in Jacksonville and had no idea we were cousins.

Forty years later while doing genealogy research in the Florida State Library in Tallahassee, I found a photo showing Stephens/Douglas women standing by a Mr Sompayrac. It was probably Theodore & Margaret and one of her sisters. I believe the photo was in the Stephens file folder, if not there, ask if there's a Douglas file folder.

While reading your post, I came to remember vaguely about stumbling upon an old newspaper article from the 1850's featuring a Mr. Sompayrac's voyage to the West and his hostile encounter with Native Indians. I think I have this copy. I'm not related to the Sompayrac, but I suspect that my ancestor J. Delphin might have known him from Natchitoches. I just discovered that article when I was researching on the Delphin.

Donald

I purchased a home in Downtown Jacksonville, Florida in a now historic district named Springfield. My home was originally built in about 1898-1899 and was first resided in by a Theodore Sompayrac (I believe it was Theodore H. Sompayrac) and had a son names Lauren Sompayrac that apparently went on to be a quiet prominant doctor and noted author. I am trying to find old documentation and pictures of my 1890's victorian home as well as be in contact with some of the family if that is possible. Please contact me at (904) 651-6676 if you have any information.

Do you have any infomration on the sale of a male slave named Helaire or Hilario by Ambrose Lecomte to the Prudhomme family. Also, do you have any infomration regarding the sale of a slave named Jeanne to either the Prudhomme or the Hertzog families. I am a descendant of those slaves and I would appreciate any assistance that you can provide.

Your great grandmother, the mother of Desiree LeComte, was Antoinette Adeline Deblieux. I have been researching these families for many years, and would like to make contact with you.

This past September 54 American DeBlieuxs went to France for the most awesome family reunion-the first to reunite the family since 1802. There will be a DeBlieux Family Reunion in Natchitoches, April 24, 2004. So far almost 60 of our French cousins will be joining us. Hope you will join us.

Lynda DeBlieux Hlywiak
atlcajun@charter.net

They have an extensive collection. Some of the papers involve Ambrose LeComte. Good luck.

I'm looking for a Margaret Douglas(s) who had two children, one named Hannah Rosa and the son's name is unknown. Does this family seem to match yours? The Margaret I'm trying to trace claims that her son died before 1845. She was living in Charleston and left that city because of the memories connected with her son's death. She resettled in Norfolk, Virginia and then moved to Philadelphia in 1854. I don't know when or where she died. Could this Margaret Douglas(s) be related to your Margaret Douglas(s)?

I have been doing research on letters sent from the home of (Paul) Victor Sompayrac and his wife Rebecca in 1842 from Helen Eastman of Lowell Massachusetts. She was a good friend of the family. She also stayed at Oak Hill and mentions many of the family. Priscilla was also a good friend. At that time they lived on Tiger Island in Natchitoches. In a later letter written by Rebecca, more houses were being built on Tiger Island. Helen died in 1848, but I think that is where the namne Helen came into your family. I would appreciate any information on Tiger Island or Rebecca (was she from the north?).
Thanks, Minta Hall

Bob,
I think I got some things wrong on my last message. Ambroise was the emmigrant from France, but I can't remember how many greats grandfather. You know, our great grandfather died when our grandfather was very young, about 5 or so. That's why your father, Rob, didn't know much...or perhaps his father wasn't told much by the women who raised him...or somebody wasn't told something. A couple of great uncles owned plantations, one of which was the Cherokee, which is open for tours. There was an article some years ago in Southern Living magazine about the Cherokee. It is now owned by the Murphy's Oil family. According to the census of 1860, two Sompayracs owned just over 100 slaves each. See afrogeneous.com. Type in keyword Sompayrac to any search engine, and there is lots of stuff, if you have time to sort through it all. Hi to Jean.

Hello cousin Bob! This is John, your uncle Walt in Baltimore's son! How's life? I talked with your mother not too long ago over the phone. We have some information, but most of it is on the Web. The Cherokee plantation in Natchidoches belonged to a great uncle. See Natchidoches LA historic houses. I traced back the Sompayrac name to the late 17th cent in Roquecorbe, France. Your great great (I think it's 4 greats) uncle Ambroise moved to LA in 1800 or so from France. There is a small town called Payrac somewhere in France. Lots of cool stuff. I don't know how much I can get my hands on right now, cause I'm in the process of moving, but get back. I haven't seen you since Grand Lake in 1960 or so, just before Grandma died. Remember when you drove a boat over a floating picnic table?

I am a great-great grandson of Ambrose LeComte by his first marriage to Julia Buard. His will leaves a usufruct of some of his property to Desiree Sompayrac, but leaves his estate to his daughters, Cora, Laura, Atala, and Eliza (who married J. Alphonse Prudhomme and was my great-grandmother) all of whom were born of the first marriage. He and Julia Buard had two sons by their marriage, but both died. There were no children by his second marriage.
