Hi Joanne,
I looked at your tree real quick and your oldest Sommerfeldt was born about Johann Christian 1843 and looks like your family settled in Minnesota.
My Michael Summerfeldt was born earlier.
Very family names - like Henrietta Krenz to my Mathilda Krenz who made the son of Michael whose name is Julius.
Diane - you can write me at deedeerossell@yahoo.com if you think we have any chance of being related. Mine all were in Wisconsin.

Hi Jenny,

Your story sounds familiar but I don't recognize the first names. My own Sommerfeld ancestors were Lutherans who lived a little bit to the south east of Gdansk in Solnicia and Tujsk Poland which were West Prussia villages at the time. They emigrated to Ukraine in 1867 and to Canada in 1912.

I firmly believe there is a common ancestor to the Sommerfeld's but after 15 years of searching I have not found it.

Have you looked at http://forum.sommerfeldfamilien.net/index.php ? It is a fantastic resource but mostly in German.

Grant

Hello from Australia

I have just started to research a Sommerfeld family and I have only one clue however it may tie in with you.

I have a Rachel Sommerfeld born about 1883 in province of West Prussia (provincial capital: Danzig, today known by the Polish name Gdansk) in the state of Prussia (state capital: Berlin).

She is the youngest and only daughter of parents Abraham Sommerfeld born 1846 and Bertha Baer born 1840 (I think?). She has 8 brothers before her. The whole family immigrated to America in 1884.

If you think there is a connection maybe we can help each other

Look forward to hearing back from you......Jenny in Oz

Re: Ludwig SOMMERFELD

Hi, I see this is an old thread, but thought I would post in here about some cross-research on your family. I was seeking information on Paul Ludwig Sommerfeld, (one and the same you are discussing). Paul was a farmer, land developer, builder and respected businessman, and a city Councilor in the city of Saskatoon. At least one of his buildings is still in use today in the center of the city. I am researching him from a historical standpoint, as I am not of relation.

Here is a link for you to see: http://www.onbroadway.ca/royalbank.htm

The Sommerfeld Blocks, located at 813 – 817 Broadway Avenue, presently house the Saskatchewan Crafts Council and Bud’s on Broadway. These two buildings were erected concurrently in the spring and summer of 1912. Previous to this date, the lots were vacant except for a brief tenure by the Nutana Variety Store, which is believed to have existed between 1910 and 1911. Both buildings were designed by Bugenhagen and Turnbull and built by Paul Sommerfeld.

Mr. Sommerfeld, originally from Windom, Minnesota, and the product of German ancestry, came to Saskatoon in 1901 at the age 40. His wife and six children followed in 1902. From 1902 to 1906 they farmed on land which straddled Eighth Street East, near present day Holliston School. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Sommerfeld gave up his farming operation to pursue business interests with Real Estate Co. and Robert Irvine’s lumberyard and hardware business. He was also the president of the Saskatoon Mutual Fire Insurance Co. which occupied an office on the second floor at 813 Broadway Avenue. The first floor’s original occupant was the Royal Bank of Canada’s Nutana branch; it opened on February 10, 1913. The Royal Bank remained on the ground floor of 813 for 53 years until they moved to their present day site at the northwest corner of Broadway and Main in 1966. The original longtime location of the Royal Bank caused this portion of the Sommerfeld Block to become incorrectly known as the ‘Royal Bank building’. The rest of the building saw continual changes from tenant apartments to print shops to construction companies while the Royal Bank endured.

On September 7, 1951, the Royal Bank was subject to a bizarre daytime holdup by two Vancouver men wearing masks. At approximately 2 p.m. two men from Vancouver, Peter Melnyk and John Hunter, stole a green ford sedan from outside the Technical Collegiate in Saskatoon. The two thieves drove the stolen car to Broadway’s Royal Bank, a few minutes before 3 p.m. (closing time for the bank). They were wearing blue overalls and light brown stocking masks with holes for eyes; each was brandishing a revolver. A total of $10, 731 was stolen by the two armed men who then fled west on Tenth Street.

Two Saskatchewan residents, Clayton Rogestad of Saskatoon and Walter Koshman of Moose Jaw, had just pulled off Broadway when they noticed the suspicious men and made a u-turn at 9th Street to park in front of the bank near what they later learned was the getaway car.

They could see the holdup taking place inside the bank and proceeded to follow the robbers after they left. In their Ford sedan stolen from a Saskatoon school teacher named Marion Graham, the robbers led the civilians and two police cars in a circle beginning down Broadway and then left on 10th as far as Lorne Avenue. Turning left on Lorne, they traveled south past the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club and turned left yet again. On a dirt road they went east as far as Clarence and swung left on Clarence heading due north reaching speeds near 85 mph. Apparently, shots were fired at the fleeing bandits by the city police car on Lorne but this was to no avail. The car was spotted heading onto the University campus at the street car terminal on College Drive (across from where the Dairy Queen is now).

The bandits abandoned their car and headed towards the riverbank pursued by the unarmed civilians, who fortunately never encountered the armed robbers before the police arrived. With the help of civilians and the new invention of car radios, the police apprehended the criminals less than an hour after the robbery. A police dog called ‘Dirk’ discovered them dividing the loot in some bushes near the Chemistry Building and they surrendered without incident.

For a town the size of Saskatoon, (52,732 in 1951), the robbery had all the elements of a Hollywood picture. There was premeditated crime, civilian intervention, a police car chase, shootings, hysterical people running out of the bank after the fact, barricaded streets and bridges, abandoned vehicles, a foot chase, a manhunt dog search, and the eventual arrest of the bad guys. As if planned by a modern day director, the lead actor, robber Peter Melnyk, booted a reporter in the side of the head just as the reporter took a picture of Melnyk being escorted into the police station by five men in blue. It seems a storyline fit for a screenwriter.

Fortunately, the rest of the bank’s 53 years at 813 were not as eventful. After the bank moved in 1966, the main floor and basement were taken over by the Saskatoon French School for three years until several nursery schools occupied the area until 1974. Northland Books was the next tenant, after their original location at 902 Victoria Avenue had been badly damaged by fire earlier that same year. Garry Shoquist’s store specialized in antiquarian and out of print books. After Northland Books moved to 630 10th Street East, the assorted tenants included print shops, artist studios, and various tenants occupying the 2nd and 3rd floors, which at the time were rented out as single apartments. Before the current tenants took their place, Bread and Broth Restaurant, the Shoestring Gallery, Canada World Youth, Broadway Book Repair, and Safeguard Business Systems all spent time in the Sommerfeld Blocks.

I'm pretty sure I connect to this Sommerfeld line through
the brother of my great grandfather. Wilhelm Koss , brother
to Johann Koss ( my great grandfather) married Anna Sommerfeld.

Anna Sommerfeld was born 5 June 1849 in Meszcze. She married Wilhelm Koss (B. August 5, 1846 in Meszcze).

Their children that I know about were Ludwig, born 1874, Karolina born 1880,Emma born in 1886 and Otto born 1888.
Emma had one child that I know about, Martha born May 13, 1908 in Lodz.
Emma was not married when she had Martha.
My information comes from a census that I received from
archives in Poland
Linda

Sommerfelds in Michigan aprox 1870's Two Orphaned Brothers

Brothers Emil and Herman Sommerfeld were orphaned when their parents died from an epidemic of some sort at that time period 1860 thru 1870 the mother who's name I do not have when she died the children went to live with their mothers brother Jules/Julius Beneg or Benning or Beneng who was also a widower himself. He ended up marrying a widowed woman named Augusta Neumann in the Posen area of Michigan. I think its a spectacular story of how far they went I only know this from a hand written account from a Grandaughter who's parents and Grandparents are Neumanns from posen and later moved to Alpena, Mi. the Story is printed on my Family tree (Stark) her sister was my dads mother anyone that are related to these men are welcome to the info from the story as they were considered uncles to the Neumann family. e-mail is anthonystark1@verizon.net

Hello:

I am researching the SOMMERFELD's from Poland. I have very limited information other than Natalie was born in Poland in 1901 or 1902. She and some of her siblings were in a Siberian/Russian concentration camp at one point prior to 1924. She married Emil Reschke (born in Volhynia and was of Russian citizenship) and came to Canada in 1925 with her oldest daughter, Margaretha.

Any information would be helpful!

thank you,
Karen

Hello: I just found the ship's passenger list late last night and it shows that she was Russian, not Polish. This is kind of odd seeing how her children have always said she was from Poland on a border town near Russia. Anyway, in the ship passenger list I can barely make out the name, but it appears to be Seferinowa. When I look through historical towns/villages in Russia the only thing I've come close to is Safonova, Russia which is Smolensk Oblast. Natalie Sommerfeld married Emil Reschke sometime between 1920 - 1924, unknown where. Natalie was also in a Siberian concentration camp, however, she didn't speak of it much and dates and places are not known. I know that she had about 6 siblings, some of who she witnessed die in the concentration camp. I've been pursuing this string of my ancestry for several years and am running into dead-ends. Anything you can offer would be appreciated, including any websites that you can recommend for searching. Thank you, Karen

Alexander and Katherine (Hofmann) Sommerfelt

Alexander and Katherine Sommerfelt

I live across the street from Douglass Cemetery in Troutdale Oregon I was there taking pictures for a “Find A Grave” request the other day and I added 2 memorials, one for Frank and one for William Sommerfelt. They are 2 of the 3 sons of Alexander and Katherine Sommerfelt.

The 1920 census is the only census I found for the family and it has a lot of information and with that I was able to find marriage certificates for some of them which added to my information.

Alexander "Alex" Sommerfield, was born in 1878 in Poland as were both of his parents, he immigrated to America from Poland in 1900. He Married Katherine Hoffman she had immigrated to America in 1894 or 1899 from Germany where she and both of her parents were born.

Alexander and Katherine Sommerfelt and there daughter Katherine, who’s last name was Galvan, are buried at Douglass also. I have added my findings to William and Frank’s memorial’s see the links below.
I have had their oldest daughter Louise West, linked to her parents so you will see 4 of there 7 children linked to them. There are pictures of their grave stones too.

Alexander died in 1930 at age 52 and Katherine died in 1936 at age 64, way to young but at least Olga the youngest was about 18 when her father died and about 24 when her mother died.
The Elizabeth Behnke that married into a distant family line of mine is someone about whom I know very little. She was b. 1872 and d. 1912, but this info is from a cousin who knows no locations. Elizabeth married Walter Christian Pertzche in LaCrosse, WI, on Sep 20, 1867.

Maybe you can find something about the Behnke family from searching the WI marriage archives, and look up census data from LaCrosse during this time period? Many immigrants did not tend to move around much once they arrived in the US. They sought out communities of like immigrants, married and raised families where they arrived.
Kathy, don't know if you are still looking for Sommerfelds in the Leask, Brightholm or Shellbrook area but I can ask around. They are related to my Schmalz, Schmidt and Weiss side of family. Let me know if you are still interested and I'll ask my Mom.
p.S. I have the Brightholm history book and can look things up for you. Sommerfelds still live in Shellbrook.

So I am following the thread of this question. YOu are trying to look for relatives of Edward Schmalz who was my Mom's great uncle. My Great Grandmother Lydia Schmidt married Joseph Schmalz in 1908 or so who was brother of Edward. I have the family history of these two and their families which I am just starting to log into ancestry today.

Karen

It is not unusual for the "nationality" to be different especially when dealing with immigrants from Poland.
The best place for information on Germans from Eastern Europe (Poland) is a site called SGGEE.org. It is specifically dedicated to our ancestors from Poland. For a nominal fee of about $40 you can access all their Data bases. Additionally, you can send them a Gedcom and they will run it through their Data bases and match up records for you. I sent mine in and my Tree went from about 500 to 2500.

Well worth it. We may even have relatives in common. MIne were from the Sobalew, Lublin area before they went to Latvia and then finally to Canada

Ken

Re: Sommerfeld Family in Wisconsin

I am the daughter of Dayton Sommerfeld, who was born in Chippewa Falls in 1926 to George and Gladys Sommerfeld. About all I know is that George was killed in a boiler accident leaving Gladys with a whole passel of children. I'm not even really sure if George was his real name but I remember hearing it.
Dayton had a sister--Dorothy, brothers--George, Robert, Kenneth, Fritz along with a half brother Richard Christensen.
I'd be interesting in hearing anything you know to fill in the blanks in my story.

HI,

Thanks for your reply. Is Elizabeth related to Henrietta?
Our Pauline moved around a lot, mostly in Minnesota, and then in North Dakota. Because we know nothing about her it is difficult to trace any history. I appreciate your help.
THanks Janet

Henriette Behnke, Pauline Behnke, Sommerfeld

Hi,
My Great Grandmother Pauline Behnke was born in 1846 in Breitenstein Germany, married a Ludwig Kruger in 1864 0r 67 ,came to America in 1868, settled in Mc Leod County Minnesota and in the 1900's moved to Hillsboro, North Dakota area. This info sounds very much like Hennriette Behnke. Is it possible they were cousins? Do you know who Henrietta parents or grandparents were? We are quite sure that they had family here when they arrived

I am hoping that there is some sort of connection and would appreciate any information you could give me. THanks Janet

Hey Don Ross,
Emilie Sommerfeld is my great great grandmother. I would like to know more about my ancestral line.
Emilie Sommerfeld got married to August Ludwig Hanusch. That I know for sure. Eugenia Klara, Alfred Edward, Wanda and Max were their children. Eugenia Klara was my great grandmother. Alfred Edward and Max fell in WW2.
Wanda first lived in Lodz but moved to Oldenburg, Germany later; were she finally passed away.

Eugenia Klara got married twice.

First to Brunon Hermann Marcinkowski. They had two children (Elli Erna and Harry). Therefore is Elli my grandmother. Harry died in Russia while the Germans attacked Russia.
Elli Erna married Alojzy Olejnik.
They also had two children. Grażyna and Mirosław.
Grażyna's my mother who married Stefan Ozdoba.

If you would like to get to know more about the family tree having it's roots with Emilie Sommerfeld or anything more, just contact me on:

krzysztof.ozdoba@neostrada.pl

today's christmas. we are writing cause we've been talking about this while sitting together.

We live in Lodz.

Marry Christmas :)
Hope you'll answer.

I read your post and noted the referenced name Emilia Merke -marriage. My grandfather's name was Emil Merke and he was born in 1884 in Zhitomer parish and I wonder whether there is a connection with my Great Grandfather Wilhelm Merke and Emilia. Both my Grandfather and Greatgrandfather moved to Canada in 1913. Would love to hear from you.
