Classification: Query
Surnames: Sojourner, LaJournier, Cassels
My information was second or even third hand. It came to me from a cousin who already had the lines back that far, and I believe she got her information from Dot (Dorothy) Sojourner of MS who runs a bed & breakfast out of the original homestead of Hardy Sojourner, her ancestor.

It is believed that my ancestor, Mary Katherine Sojourner, dau. of John and Sarah Sojourner (one of the sons of Mrs. LaJournier) was born either in Ireland or South Carolina in 1792. I think the belief is that they ran from France and ended up in Ireland and migrated to the US from there. I have no evidence to confirm nor deny this claim.

Mary Katherine Sojourner married Reuben Cassels and they had a son named John Franklin Cassels. In the book, "The MS Official & Statistical Register" (Centennial Edition - Rowland, 1917) on p. 829 an article about John Franklin states that his grandparents were born in Scotland & Ireland. That would be Reuben being born in Scotland and Mary being born in Ireland. However, John Franklin states in the 1900 Federal Census that his father was born in Alabama and his mother was born in South Carolina. For this reason, I list both as her POB, until such time as I can confirm or deny one or the other or even both.

I guess it wouldn't hurt for me to look into the Alabama birth. I just now realized I never even paid attention to that! LOL

I would love to locate their passenger records for when they did enter America. That would help.
