Re: Sojka

Dear Jane, Thank you for your post and warm interest in our shared ancestry. Last year in November, I had initated contact with Jeanne Sojka and she very graciously sent me the following email. I had tried to respond to her but for some unknown reason,I was unable to continue our correspondence and further contact failed regretably.

At this time, I would like to extend my own belated condolences on the passing of your Mother. As a youngster of perhaps 5 yrs old I recall that I only met her on one or two occasions when she visited my Grandmothers house(Apolonia Osmola Kadula)in Brooklyn, NY. Her mother Eva was a Saj. One notable visit of your Mothers was the New york Worlds Fair which she attended with some of my own family and they brought me along. I posted a picture of your mother on her wedding Day and Jeanne was able to identify it for me.

I met all of your Mothers Brothers/Sisters but as a youngster don't recall too much. Kasimir was a lawyer and had an office in our Chinatown, NYC and he closed on my sister Dolores first house. I remember that all your aunts/uncles were well educated and genteel people and they stood out among the crowd so to speak. My Grandmother was delighted to have visits and corresponde(exchange of photo's and some letters)from her cousin Antonina your grandmother. I think she had a brother and sister that were both in religious orders, Buffalo NY.

I would like to provide my own direct email address: citicelt@warwick.net. My home telehone number is 845 258 4679. My name is Kenneth C Martin, 20 Horizon Farms Drive, Warwick, New York 10990 If there is anything specific you would like to know I will do my best to answer. I know its hard to cover it all and would be pleased to communicate with you and share stories. I have posted a lot of information on my family tree and have saved various documents that might interest you.

My Grandmother married Karl Kadula in 1908 they had four children. William, Caroline, Helen & Charles. Caroline died in 1918 of the Flu. She was 6years old. All have passed now with my mother Helen living the longest. She died at age 97 last February. When she married my Dad, Joseph Martin, 1931 they visited your grandmothers home in Turner Falls and stayed a few days.

Here is Jeannes email to me:
Dear Mr. Martin,

What a joyous surprise to receive your detailed email in my inbox at work! I've never encountered any other family member who is so interested in genealogy. I wrote the obituary for "Lily" Florence Sojka and the funeral director thought I included too much information, but now I am so glad that I did! It is amazing how helpful the web can be for family history searches.

I am responding to you from my home email which is jms-66@comcast.net, so please use this email for correspondence.

I have always wondered about the rest of the Osmola family. I know very little but I will send you what I have via US mail if you send me your complete address. "Lily" Florence Sojka was my aunt; she and my dad Andrew (Babe) were brother and sister, the two youngest in the family of nine children born to Antonina (Osmola) and Jan Sojka. My dad died in 1968 when I was only eight years old so we didn't spend a lot of time at the Sojka house at 178 L Street. My grandmother Antonina Sojka died in 1974, so perhaps contact between your family and mine stopped then.

Blanche (Sojka) Golonka and her husband Stephen and their two daughters Jane and Charlene lived on the second floor of 178 L Street and we spent more time with them. Yes, that is a photo of her wedding from April of 1948. Thank you for the image.

My husband Richard Herchenreder and I became close to Cioci Lily Sojka and helped her during the last ten years of her life. She

had cancer of the blood and congestive heart failure. I just am completing my duties as the executor of her estate after she passed away in 2007. Lily had accumulated a lot papers and photos from the family over the years and I am still sorting them. There are I believe some photos that she couldn't identify that she thought may be Osmola family members. She knew there were family members in New York but couldn't remember them. I will try to scan them and send them to you. There are also letters in Polish that I need to have translated that might provide more clues about the Osmola family.

Antonina Osmola was born on April 25, 1889 in Wojslawiec, Mielec, Poland.

Her parents were Agnieszka Niedbala and Frank Osmola. She had four sisters and one brother: Bronislawa; Caroline; Josephine; Anna; and Joseph.

She immigrated to the United States at age 18, via Hamburg, Germany aboard the S.S. Grafwaldersee on March 17, 1905, and arrived at Ellis Island in New York on March 31, 1905. She listed her occupation as servant and that she could read and write. She had $16 in her pocket. She paid for her own passage. She was going to Turners Falls, MA where she had a relative by marriage, Frank Zak. Her cousin Mary Niedbala was married to Frank Zak.

According to the Ellis Island website, the S.S. Graf Waldersee was built by Blohm & Voss Shipbuilders in Hamburg, Germany in 1899. It was built for the Hamburg-American Line for service from Hamburg to New York. It was to be named the Pavia but the name was changed to Graf Waldersee prior to completion. The ship weighed 12,830 gross tons; it was 586 (bp) feet long; 62 feet wide. Its service speed was 13 knots. The ship could hold 2,546 passengers: 162 first class; 184 second class; and 2,200 third class. It was scrapped at Hamburg in 1922.

She came to Turners Falls, Massachusetts where her cousin, Mary (Niedbala) Zak was already living. She worked on the Zak farm in Gill until Mrs. Scheff (Szewcz?) taught her to use the machinery at the cotton mill in Turners Falls.

Antonina Osmola married Jan Sojka on May 6, 1907 at St. Mary’s Church (renamed Our Lady of Peace in 2006) in Turners Falls, Massachusetts. They were married by Father Luke Thomas Purcell and witnesses were Jan’s cousin Peter Sojka and Jan’s sister Mary (Sojka) Zajac.

Nine children were born to them: Anna Sojka on June 25, 1909; Anthony Joseph Sojka on May 7, 1912; Blanche Agnes Sojka on June 7, 1914; Edward Joseph Sojka on January 1, 1916; Casimir Frank Sojka on February 5, 1917; Stanislaus Joseph Sojka on April 11, 1919; John Frank Sojka on February 4, 1921; Andrew Frank Sojka on November 20, 1923; and Florence Cecelia Sojka on October 22, 1925.

At the time of her naturalization on June 28, 1922, Antonina Sojka was 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighed 127 pounds. She had brown hair, medium complexion, and blue-grey eyes, with a mole on her left cheek.

Antonina died on December 13, 1974 in Turners Falls and is buried in the Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery.

I haven't had a chance to go to the Mormon family history center and check the microfilm records for more info about the Osmola/Sojka family. I only recently became interested in genealogy and so many people had already passed away before I could

ask them questions.

Please understand that I have two children, Alex, a senior in high school and Amy, a fifth grader and sometimes I get very busy with them and don't get to read my email every day. Amy has type 1 diabetes and wears an insulin pump and was diagnosed in May with juvenile arthritis so sometimes our lives get very complicated managing these two illnesses.

My home address is 9 Sherman Dr., South Deerfield, MA 01373 and our phone number is 413-665-9979.

Thank you so much for writing and I hope we can share more information,

Jeanne Sojka.

Dear Ken,
I am remembering my mother, Blanche Sojka Golonka, today on the 10th anniversay of her death. My mother was the daughter of Antonina Osmola Sojka, my grandmother. I was so shocked to read that she came to the US with a cousin, as I had always thought that she came with her bother, who became a priest, and her sister, who became a nun. I grew up in Turners Falls and lived in the Sojka home which was sadly sold just last year. I would love to hear more information about your grandmother and family. Jane Golonka

Hi,

I am researching my family and I read your response to Danelle Klinect. My Great Grandmother’s name was Anne Sojka. Her immediate family originated from Bohemia and immigrated to Cleveland, OH. She married a German with the last name of “Brand” and had 4 children (I think); Robert, Mildred, Dorothy & Laverne. Laverne married a Scotch-Irishman; Carl Edward McCollough (his family had settled in Butler, PA). Sometime in the late 1940’s, the whole family moved to California.

Does any of this sound familiar to you? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

D. Their father, George was an infant when his parents John (Jan) and Mary (Maria) Sojka emigrated from Bohemia in the 1850s; directly to Washington Co., IA. Evidently no family connection since "our" Yaro lived all of his life in Washington Co. Evidently not many people looking into the Sojka line?? Valorie

Hello,
I am a Sojka from Massachusetts. My grandfather John Sojka was born in NY but his family moved back to Poland in about 1920. He and his wife Frances(not sure if that is her correct spelling) moved back to the US in 1949 where they lived in Rehoboth. I currently live in Alpharetta, GA.....thought I'd say hello to a fellow SOJKA!

Jon Aaron Sojka,
age: 28

Researching John and Susan SOJKA
I am researching my family genealogy.

John and Susan Sojka came to the USA just before my maternal grandmother (Julia Sojka Polens on11 May 1915) was born. John's death certificate says that were from Hungary. Family stories say that it is an area that later became a part of Czechoslovakia, which is probably now Slovakia.

John Sojka b 1881 (d 17 Jan 1919 - Cleveland, Ohio USA)
Susan Hanas b 22 July 1879 (d 1945 - Detroit, Michigan USA)

John's parents were Michael and Anastazia. John's death certificate says that they were both from Austria.

Do you have any suggestions on where I can begin searching for more information?

Ken Zabel

Thomas Sojka b. 1860's, son of John Sojka and Eva Wasik of Niecjnaria, Poland

Still looking for this Sojka line. I have found that my John Soyka was the son of Thomas Sojka who was a brother to Jan Sojka who immigrated in 1907 to Ludlow, MA. Two of Jan's daughters also immigrated.

John Soyka(b.1877) m. Mary Anne Krupa (b.1874) Poland
Thomas Sojka(b. abt 1857) m.
Valenty SOJKA

My grandmother had some relatives from Poland near Bydgozck (the spelling is off I'm sure) named Valenty Sojka son of Matthew , I think. Valenty came to the USA with his 1st wife and child. He opened a mortuary in Toledo,Ohio and later changed his last name to Sujowski(it sounded more Polish). His grandson and greatgrandsons now run 3 mortuarys in the Toled area. Other family names are Gawronski,Stefaniak,Radecki and Helminiak. Does any of this sound familiar?
