Am still searching for the area of origin in Poland for John Soika. Further research has shown that he arrived in New York Harbor June 14, 1871, aboard the North German Bargue, Columbus, having departed Europe from Bremen. John traveled with his wife, Mary Bucholz, their children, Michael age 6, Catherine, age 3, and Gosepha (Josephine), infant. Mary Soika's parents, Anton and Mary Bucholz also traveled with the younger couple, along with another young boy (relationship unknown), Michal Sojka, age 5. The family apparently stayed in Syracuse, NY as another child was born there before the family moved on to settle in Moundsview Twp, outside St. Paul, Minnesota. It has been found that John Soika was initially married to Anna Bucholz, who I believe died in Poland. Apparently, John then married Anna's sister, Mary Bucholz, and together they had a total of 11 more children, and also raised the 1st 2 children born to Anna Bucholz...Michael, and Catherine. John was born in Poland January 11, 1842, and died in Minnesota. I have located death certificate, naturalization documents, and ships records, but have still not found where John and Mary came from. Church records that have been obtained concerning marriages, baptisms, etc have also not lead me to the original family Polish origin. The only clue is that a son stated in the 1920 census that his father had come from Warsaw. Since John was a farmer, I suspect he came from an area near Warsaw, and not within the actual city. If you have any clues that you can add, please contact me, or post a reply.
