Hi Richard,
Jane M. Sofge is *not* the same person as Margaret Jane Wright Sofge. From what we know, Ernest Charles' first marriage to Jane ended in tragedy with the loss of both children and his wife. He then went on to marry one of his music students (Margaret Jane Wright) and to have five more children. The chronology of events (all presumably taking place in Augusta, GA and Hamburg, SC) would be something like:
sometime before 1850 Ernest Charles married Jane M. ?
child: Charles Sofge b. 7 July 1850 d. 17 July 1851 (of dysentery)
child: Katy A. Sofge b. either 1848 and 1851(age at death is listed as 7 in one record, 10 in another), d. 29 August 1858 (of ulcerated sore throat)
Jane M. Sofge died 17 June 1856 at age 26 of child bed.
Ernest Charles Sofge married Margaret Jane Wright (b. 15 Feb 1844) on 15 May 1861.
child: Carrie Isabel Sofge (b. 9 Mar 1862)
child: Theodore William Sofge (b. 20 Jan 1864)
child: Katherine Augusta Sofge (b. 6 Feb 1866)
child: Harriet Anne Sofge (b. 29 June 1867)
child: John Wright Sofge (b. 27 Dec 1869)
Ernest Charles Sofge died 28 June 1892
Margaret Jane Wright Sofge died 2 Feb 1919
It is interesting that the 1852 census lists four females in the household. Jane and Katy would be two. Would they have counted servants, perhaps? Other children that we have no other record of? Interesting problem.
Cheers,
Chris Sofge
