Soccoccio - Family History & Genealogy .

Joseph Michael Soccoccio, 73, resident of Woodland Hills, Calif., passed away at his home following a lengthy illness on November 25, 2010. Joe was born January 7, 1937 in Erie, Pa., the son of Olivia Angelotti Soccoccio and the late Joseph J. Soccoccio. After graduating from McDowell High School in 1954, Joe served in the United States Coast Guard for four years. Joe moved to California in 1958 and has lived there since. After working at Lockeed Aerospace Corporation, Joe completed his undergraduate work at San Fernando Valley State College and his Masters Degree in Liberal Arts at UCLA. Joe began teaching photography at Pierce College in California and served as Department Chair for 20 of the 35 years that he taught. Joe had a passion for teaching and enjoyed interacting with his students. His classes quickly filled with eager students who wished to learn the art of Photography. Joe was a life long photographer who always perfected his craft. He had a love for traveling, camping, and going on road trips where he would take photographs. Many of his black and white prints can be seen hanging in his Erie relatives' homes. Joe is survived by his mother, Olivia Angelotti Soccoccio, of Erie; his two children, Jay Soccoccio, and Michele Soccoccio Uy, and her husband, Joey Uy, of California; his sister, Nancy Soccoccio Chiappazzi, and her husband, Joseph Chiappazzi; a nephew, Joey Chiappazzi; a niece, Emily Chiappazzi; and two aunts, Jenny Angelotti of California, and Mabel Sockett of Erie. Joe is also survived by many cousins and their children. Growing up in Erie with such a close knit family made him more like a brother to them. Joe did not enjoy Erie winters, perhaps the reason for making California his permanent home, so the Christmases he would return were ironically snow-filled and shovel ready. A memorial mass will be celebrated at a time and place to be determined by the family. Memorials may be sent to John Kanzius Fund, 130 W. 8th St., Erie PA 16501, or The Arc of Erie County, 1311 W. 26th St., Erie, PA 16508.
