Donald_Hinson  (View posts) Posted: 15 Jun 2000 9:06PM GMT
I'm researching the Barbados branch of my family tree. I've obtained information on several of my ancestors:

Gr Gr Gr Grandfather: John William Sober (Unknown)
Gr Gr Grandfather: James Edward Sobers b. abt. 1863 in St. Peter
Great Grandfather: James Augustus Sobers b. 1884 in St. Andrew
Great Uncle: James Elverton Sobers b. 1887 in St. Andrew
Great Uncle: Ernest William Sobers b. 1894 in St. Andrew

Any information on the families of these individuals would greatly be appreciated. I'm particulary interested in the children of James Elverton Sobers and Ernest William Sobers

I need help in finding info about my greatgrandfather Dewitt Clinton Sobers. I think the family originally came from PA and then settled in Crawford Co. OH. He was born in 1856/1857 in Todd Twp.Crawford Co.He married Emily(Emma)Jump in 1878. They later lived in Fostoria OH where he died in 1946.
Would his name be listed anywhere in your line of Sobers? You mentioned a Jacob Sobers
whose name sounds familiar.I'd appreciate any info you could give me.
Thanks,
Jane Meyer

Sober/Sobers Family

I may be from the same Sober/Sobers line as you. My greatgrandfather was Dewitt Clinton Sobers who was born in Seneca Co. OH in 1857. I think his parents were Edgar Sobers and Sarah Skeels who were married in Seneca Co. in 1855. I think their family probably came from Pennsylvania. Do you have any of these names in your records? I have hit a "brick wall" with my Sobers line. Thanks for any help you could give me.

Hi Yolanda,

I have found quite a bit of information on the Sobers, but unfortunately don't recognize any of the names that you referenced. You can view what I know about the Sobers at my website, "We Sailed Great Ships" http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/DLHinson/GrShips.ht...

My information goes back to approximately 1820. There are several resources on the page that might help you with your research. Good Luck!

Don

I looked through your page on the Sobers and I noticed that you said that Gary Sobers is supposed to be your fist cousin. My grandfather had told my father that Gary was our first cousin as well. Maybe we're related

Hello Deron,
I don't think I responded to your message in April of 2001. I am married to an INGRAM, my maiden name was SOBERS. I have been doing genealogy for some time, especially on my father's SOBERS lines. I have never found them to connect with INGRAM lines. However, I did tackle the INGRAM lines for my husband, and yes, there were some INGRAM's in Texas, but I do not believe that they are his direct lines.
I am sorry I can not be of more help. Email me directly if you want to ask more about these lines. Laurel INGRAM

Hi Dawn,

I have Sally (Salmoe, Sarah) MARSH born 26 Jan 1801 in Hamilton Twp., Monroe Co., PA, married George Washington SOBER Sr. abt. 1820. I do not have a death date for her.

I have her father as Abraham MARSH Sr., born 1 Jan 1760 in Northampton Co., PA, died 1 Jan 1847 in Hamilton, Monroe Co., PA. I am not sure what is first wife's name was: I have seen Elizabeth DREISBACH, daughter of Simon DREISBACH, but I am not sure if that is true. I have his second wife as Elizabeth Catherine METZGER HOUSER, she was the widow of George HOUSER (her 1st husband).
Abraham did not have a son named Frederick, he did have 12 children.

Abraham's father was David MARSH ( MERSCH) Sr. born abt. 1730 in Germany, died April 1798 in Northampton Co., PA, buried at Zion Stone Church in Kreidersville, Northampton Co., PA. His wife was Elizabeth ----. They had 13 children, none of which were named Frederick. Abraham was his second son.

Is this the same line that you are researching? I do not have a Delos in my database.
Laurel

I'm not sure if this Fredrick Marsh in any relation to your line. His photo's were found amoung photos of my great great grandparents Delos Sobers an his wife Eilzabeth Richter. Delos is the son of Jacob Sobers and Mary Matrawn . noone in my family can remember who this Fredrick Marsh person is. all the photo's found are 101 yrs of age or older. the youngest being one of my grandfather Clyde Delos Sobers at age 5. if the other names ring a bell with you please let me know i've been at a dead end for many years since the death of my grandmother until finding these old photos last month in the attic of my aunt Janice Sobers daughter of Clyde and Lillian. even she did not remember them but my grandmothers hand writing was on the backs telling who was who but no clue as to fredrick marsh.

Dear Laural,
I have just returned to genealogy after some time away and would like to be back in touch with fellow geneo's. I too am descended from "bn abt 1729" and would like the source of the "george". I have him well covered at the St Paul's Blue Church in Lehigh County as John Nuchtern/Sober and later in Northampton County. Much of my work is off the work of Sally Pryor from Washington. I would love to ehar from you and other researchers. I am descended from John George 1759, died in Leechburg, Westmoreland County.

Hello Robert, We last emailed 21 May 2002, I am glad to hear from you again. I had sent a gedcom to you and a register report for four genrerations of SOBER(Nuchtern)/SORBER/SOBERS in May of 2002.
These are the source/notes I have on John George SOBER, born about 1729; died about 1790:
BIRTH-DEATH-BURIED: John SOBER, Born: ca 1720-1730; Died: 1790; Buried: Plainfield, PA, St. Peter's Church(according to church record). Married: Barbara HELLER. Source: The Name SOBER; Mabel F. SOBER; self published 38 page soft cover booklet, 1965. Page 4. In possession of Laurel Ingram, Sterling, IL. Noted: June 2004; L. Ingram.

!NAME: Wife Barbara (SOBER) called Barbara Nuchtern in records of Salem Church Northampton County, Penn. It appears that John SOBER anglicized his name, and that (in German) he may have been Johannes Nuchtern. See the records of Dryland (Trinity) Church of Nazareth Twp., , PA, where it lists Johannes & Barbara Nuchtern as parents of a child Catherine, who was born 15 Feb 1771 & Baptized 23 Jun 1771, then years later a Barbara Nuchtern was sponsor at the baptism of Susanna Andre, a know grandchild of 'Barbara SOBER' (Susanna was daughter of Catherine (SOBER) and Nicholas Andre.) In some church records, name Nuchter/ Nuchtern are used interchangeably in yrs. 1774, 1782, 1784, 1785, 1790, 1792, Salem Union Church, Moorestown, , PA. In no instance are the surnames 'SOBER' (or variants) and Nuchtern in the same listing, except in two communicant lists which say Barbara Nuchtern or SOBER (1784) and Barbara SOBER or Nuchtern 1785 Salem Church. Source: Darlene Robison Rynearson, Murray, UT. 1996.

!WILL: Copy of Will in possession of descendant, Darlene Robison Rynearson.
Will is dated 1 Aug. 1786 and was probated in 1790.
To confirm the date of death of 1790, the reference of 'The Name Sober'; by Mabel F. Sober, of Tarentum, Penn..1965 is used. She said she talked with a great many of John and Barbara SOBER descendants, and she gives the date of 1790 as a death date on a family group sheet. Buried at the St. Peters Church Cemetery, but no stone found.

!CHURCH: Plainfield Church records lists John G. as a Yeoman, meaning freeman.

!MILITARY: D.A.R. INDEX. Records show that John SOBER & his 2 oldest sons (John Jacob and John Philip) served in the revolutionary war as Privates..
also: D.A.R. Archives.: the 2nd Battalion at Northampton.
Records show occupation as: "Serredin Revolution."
Place of residence during the American Revolution was Northampton CoCo., Pennsylvania.
"Services in assisting in the establishment of American Independence during the War of the Revolution were as follows: Soldier in the Second Battalion of the Third Company for the years 1781, 1782, 1783 in Captain Jacob Heller's Company."

On the 1763 muster-roll (on L.D.S. film #21680) the Public Records of Northampton Co., Pa.: John SOBER is listed as 24 yrs old, born in Penn. He is listed with black hair and gray eyes and being 5'9" tall. Source: Darlene Robison Rynearson, Murray, UT. 1996.

!NAME: Most records show name Sorber & SOBER for him. Sober means grave & sedate character. Source: Darlene Robison Rynearson, Murray, UT. 1996.

There is another member of the family..A brother to this John George..by the name of Jacob..born abt 1720, Married to Maria Angelica. The brother Jacob's Will was found by the Institute of Family Researchers, Inc. and the name here also appears with spelling in several ways..SORRER, Sorber, SOBER, SOPER and SEEBER. Source: Darlene Robison Rynearson, Murray, UT. 1996.

!NOTES: Birth/Christening Record of an additional child, Ludwig, was located in the Emmanuel Petersville Church (Moore Township). His date of Birth (1769) indicates that the child Barbara was born prior to 1769. It would have been hightly unusual for Mother Maria Barbara to have had a child after 1769 (She was then age 46 according to her burial record.) The child Ludwig was sponsored by Ludwig HELLER & Margaret.
Search of HELLER genealogy can not tie in the name of HELLER to Barbara. Not found is connection, especially with the HELLER Reaper saying No relation!
(Ludwig HELLER came here in 1753 usual age of 100years and 100 days. (There is a picture of him in the book). Source: Darlene Robison Rynearson, Murray, UT. 1996.
