Hi there,
I'm researching a family tree that's originally Portuguese, a sailor named Antonio/Anthony/Antony came to New Zealand sometime around the early 1850's and jumped ship. He took the name SMITH and had a Maori wife whom he separated from and took their son Michael who is registered as being born in 1856. Antonio was illegal and there's not much record of him. He was based in the Auckland area and his son ended up in the Matakana - Kawau Island area in the 1870's.
*The information that's been passed down through the family is that Antonio's original name was Da Seymour (not sure how true it is) and he jumped ship with brothers who also changed their names possibly to Brown or Jones.
If you've come across any mention of any of these names in your research or something similar please get in touch.
Thanks
Mel
