Hi Joanne
My mother was a SOALL and I am a member of the Sole Society which has extensive databases on the variations of the name.

My Mother was a Soal.1900 to 1974
Her father was James Soal. 1862 to 1947
His father as far as I can remember was Richard Soal.
Richard Soal lived in Harting, Sussex England at the time of James Soal's birth.
Am not near the family Bible in which all information was recorded.
The greatest amount of infromation was gathered by my Mother's uncle Harry who was living around the area of west Sussex/Hampshire in the 50;s and 60's

I have the following recorded.
James Soal (b. 1862) was by son of Richard (III) (1800-1873) by his second wife, Maria Pack.
This Richard was the son of Richard (II) Soal (1768-1840) and his wife Ann Ayland; and Richard (II) was the son of Richard (I) Soal (b. 1739) and his wife Sarah Boxall (b. 1741; m. 1768; d. 1803). I can provide a lot of detail about descendants of Richard and Sarah, but have almost no info regarding descendants of Richard (III). The mention of a family bible is exciting, and I'd like to know more.

Hi Joanne,

I too am researching the SOAL family in England. My 2 X great grandmother ANN ADELAIDE SOAL was born about 1830 in Islington, London, England daughter of JOSEPH SOAL & ?. Haven't found her christening yet. Approximate year of birth taken from 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 censuses. Haven't found her yet in 1841 census.

Ann Adelaide Soal married a Thomas Wylds sometime around 1850 and they had a son WILLIAM WYLDS christened 14 July 1850 in Great Munden, Hertfordshire, England. Haven't found the marriage certificate yet. Thomas Wylds dies at age of 27 and is buried in October 1850 in Great Munden, Hertfordshire, England.
In the 1851 Census the widow Ann Adelaide Wylds is living with her in-laws:
1851 England Census (copy in my files)(found on LDS microfilm)
County of Hertford
Parish: Great Munden

Reference # HO107/1705 FOLIO 487 Page 4 and Page 5

Living at Cowlus (?) or Cowlies (?)

Joseph Wilds - head - Married - Age 50 - Ag. Lab. - Born Herts, Westmill

Maria Wilds - wife - Married - age 49 - Born Herts, Westmill

Susan Wilds - Daur. - Unmarried - age 17 - Born Herts, Great Munden

Adelaide Wilds - Daur. - Widow - age 21 - widow of Ag. Lab - Born Middlesex, Islington

William Wilds - grandson - age 9 months - Born Herts, Great Munden

William Soal - son - Unmarried - age 19 - Ag. Lab. - Born Middlesex, Islington

So from this I suspect that Ann Adelaide (Soal) Wylds has a brother William born about 1832.

On 12 September, 1852 Ann Adelaide Wylds marries HENRY NORTH copy of marriage certificate (Page 205, Vol 3A, District of Ware) shows that Ann Adelaide is a widow & her father is a JOSEPH SOAL.

I haven't been able to figure out who the mother is for Ann Adelaide. I'm currently waiting on microfilms from the LDS for the 1841 census on Islington. The JOSEPH SOAL family wasn't found in the Great Munden, Westmill, Aspenden, Layston areas of Hertfordshire. Checked 3 different microfilms with the 1841 census for those areas (checked all towns, villages, hamlets on films)

I wonder if her father is JOSEPH SOAL christened 14 May 1800 in Layston, Hertfordshire and he married MARIA ANTHONY 18 September 1819 in Aspenden, Hertfordshire. I haven't been able to find these 2 in the area after their marriage. Wonder if they went to London looking for a better life?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
