Sextant inscribed R.G.C. Soady
The sextant which I inherited from my grandfather is inscribed "R.G.C. Soady - or perhaps "Loady", it's a bit hard to decipher the flowing script of the time which - i believe it to be (very roughly)of the mid nineteenth century. The sextant was made by Dollond, a London maker. I'd be delighted if someone out there could tell me more about this instrument's original (I imagine sea-faring) owner. My Grandfather, who lived in Co. Limerick in Ireland was a civil engineer and may have used it for surveying, I never got to ask him about it.

Re: Sextant inscribed R.G.C. Soady
Maybe the original message is now too old, but, I have an RGC Soady in my tree b.1854 in Dublin; Midshipman at sea, HMS Columbine according to 1871 Census. I suspect his father was Robert b. 1828 Ireland, son of Joseph b. 1602 Looe, Cornwall and Jane Boll b. 1806 Wemouth, Dorset. Joeseph was a coastguard in Ireland and the Scilly Isles.
I further suspect his name to Robert Gardener C Soady-his G GM was Sophia Gardener.

Hello Brian,
I'm surprised to get a reply after so long to the message I left on the board. It looks like your ancestor is the real McCoy alright. I don't know where you are based but I live near Cork. My e-mail address is above and my mobile No. is 086-8130960. If you are ever in the area you would be very welcome to drop by and see your ancestor's artefact in the brass so to speak.
Regards, Stan

Re: Sextant inscribed R.G.C. Soady
Hi, Joseph Soady is my 3rd great grand uncle, his sister Maria Sophie is my 3rd G GM. All 11 children were born in Looe. He married Jane Boll 8 Jun 1824 in Gerrans, Cornwall and they had 9 children. However, I have John married in 1864 to Susananna Welch and they had seven children, He eventually became a farmer on his own account. He was born 1844 in Tresco, Isles of Scilly and he died in 1920, his wife died in 1927. I have no record of your GG GM Julia Delisle from Guernsey. Other family researchers have the same details as I.
Have you more details on Julia such as marriage and children. Is John Soady the same man as we have in our tree? John's last child Edwin was born 1879. John died in 1920 on his farm we presume. He and his wife are buried in the same cemetery in Tywardreath, Cornwall, so I doubt they divorced.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Sextant inscribed R.G.C. Soady
HI ,SORRY I MADE A MISTAKE, ON THE MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE IT SAYS JOSEPH WAS A SUPERANNUATED COASTGUARD,(ON A PENSION) NOT A SUPERINTENDENT LIKE I SAID,SO THAT WOULD BE LIKE YOUR JOSEPH WOULD,T IT?

Re: Sextant inscribed R.G.C. Soady
Hi Maxine
Thanks, have been looking at the other trees and I think we have all made the same mistake of thinking that John Soady married to Susanna Welch was the right man but no, he is another Soady and not ours. A descendant of his made contact with me claiming him as hers so I msut inform her that she is on the wrong tree.
As you have the marriage cert stating his father is Joseph the superannuated coastguard then you have proved the fact that we have the wrong guy in our trees. I ahave amended mine but would appreciate if you could give me the date of Julia and John's marriage and any more facts on Julia~dob, parents etc.
One tree has John dying of Phthisis in 1867 but they have the wrong John like I did.
So we are not related but linked through a prior marriage.
Regards Brian
