Alice Lea Snuggs Brantley

Madden, Leake County, Mississippi

Alice Lea Snuggs Brantley, born October 29,1936, went to be with the Lord on May 18,2015. She was born in Carthage (Leake County, MS) to V.A. and Eula Lea Snuggs and reared in Free Trade, (Leake County) Mississippi. She was preceded in her death by her siblings, Rob Snuggs, Sue Brooks and Frances Brantley.

Alice was often described as the epitome of a southern lady and the pillars of her life were God, family and community. She was an active member of both Madden Methodist and Baptist churches, dividing her worship time between the two. She attended prayer meeting and Sunday school at the Baptist Church and then joined her husband, Karl, at the Methodist Church for the formal Sunday service.

Her family was her pride and joy. She and Karl shared over fifty-five years of marital bliss and served as an example of how a marriage can be successful and fun. A big part of their fun was their cattle operation which began soon after retirement as a tribute to her father's livelihood.

She and Karl have enjoyed many hours spent on their joint endeavor.

Happiness for Alice was having her children home for a holiday or gathering for a family event or a meal at her favorite restaurants.

Alice was a community stalwart whose primary concern was the welfare of others. Many people were the recipient of her inspirational cards and letters. She always remembered birthdays, consoled in times of bereavement, and was quick to encourage those in need. She cared deeply for the sick, infirmed, elderly, and shut ins. We are pretty sure she never saw herself as elderly.

Her interests included travel and hosting luncheons for her social and church groups. She always looked forward to a holiday shopping trip to New York or a getaway to New England for the color changing of the leaves or a trip to her beloved San Francisco through the wine country. Those trips only occurred when she could convince Karl that everything would be fine if he took "off" for a few days.

She was the consummate host of many senior teas, wedding receptions, church luncheons and progressive dinners.

Alice taught for over forty years, the last thirty plus at Leake Academy where she tried to instill a quality education into as many second graders as possible.

Teaching was a passion and although she struggled with the idea of retirement, she ultimately enjoyed not having to get her classroom ready the last several years. She recognized the importance of academic excellence and not only tried to instill it into her students and their families but into her own children at home.

As expected from a true southern woman, she maintained the facade that all was well with her in the end.

Never did she utter a single complaint or even acknowledge her failing health in her battle with ALS. Her entire family was blessed to celebrate one last Mother's Day with her recently and she had the great fortune of having her husband at her side as she passed.

Alice is survived by her husband, Karl; three children and eight grandchildren including Kay Kay Brantley Rosamond, and her husband, Bill, and their two sons, Jack and Alex. Also daughter, Karma Brantley Williams and her husband, Scott, and their two daughters, Parker and Swayze. Also son, Shelby and his wife, Beth, and their children, Savannah, Alexis, Eliza and Shelby III.

Services will be at Madden Baptist Church on Wednesday, May 20th at 10:00 am with interment following in the Madden Cemetery.
