The following are notes on a William Snead or Sneed found in the records of Oglethorpe Co., GA, in the early 1800s. He seems to disappear from Oglethorpe Co. records after about 1808. I posted some information about him to this discussion board yesterday.
1796, 1798: no Sneads or Sneeds appear on the Oglethorpe Co. tax list.
20 Dec. 1803: Billy Sneed wit. sale of land by James and Dorcus Hughey to Peter Hughes, all of Oglethorpe, from survey originally in Wilkes (Oglethorpe DB D, 330). James Luckie, JP, the other wit.
12 Jan. 1805: James Luckie of Oglethorpe to William Sneed “of Georgia,” 77 acres on Big Creek out of grant to William Luckie (Oglethorpe DB E, 10).
In the 1805 tax list of Oglethorpe Co., GA, a William Sneed is in Lockett's district, taxed for 77 acres of 3rd quality land. A John Sneed is in Hatchett’s district of Oglethorpe on same tax list, taxed for 150 acres 2nd quality land.
30 Aug. 1808: Billy Snead to Alex Lester, both Oglethorpe, 77 acres on Big Creek on which Snead is living (Oglethorpe DB E, 495).
After 1808, I don’t find William Sneed in Oglethorpe records, though a 9 Aug. 1815 deed of Reuben and Frances Sanders to Benjamin Baldwin mentions Sneed’s land (DB F, 62).
